Furled Maps are structure-locating items added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Each one stores a destination, one of the mod's structures, and using it produces a map that marks the nearest instance of that structure. The mod has four variants: the Furled Map (the base item, whose destination varies), the Ancient Furled Map, the Furled Map Citadel and the Furled Map Ice Spider Den.

Players obtain Furled Maps from chest loot, from merchant offers sold by spellcasting mobs, and by crafting. Several destinations are hostile. The Ice Spider Den is home to Ice Spiders, which also patrol snowy biomes during rain, so a map to that structure leads into their territory.

Obtaining

Furled Maps do not generate on the ground. Their sources are chest loot, merchant offers and two crafting recipes.

Crafting

Both craftable variants use shaped crafting recipes, shown in the grids above. Each recipe produces a map whose destination is already set, so the result can be used immediately. The Citadel recipe uses Ancient Knowledge Fragments, Cinder Essence and paper. The Ice Spider Den recipe uses Frozen Bone, cobwebs and Arcane Cloth.

The Ancient Furled Map has no recipe, chest loot, merchant offer or creative-tab entry in the mod data.

Furled Maps appear in two structure chest tables:

  • The Mountain Tower chest table gives a Furled Map to the Impaled Icebreaker ("Arctic Expedition Route"), in about 28% of chests.
  • The Citadel bookshelf table gives a Furled Map to the Ancient Battleground ("Legion Outpost"), in about 2.7% of chests. This map can only be used in the Nether (see Usage below).

In this pack, the mod's chest loot is also applied to vanilla chests that stand in for these structures' chests, so the percentages above are the rates for the pack's chests.

Trades

Three spellcasting mobs sell Furled Maps for emeralds. Each offer has a maximum of one use.

  • The Priest sells an Evoker Fort map ("Evoker Fort Attack Plans") for 24 emeralds.
  • The Pyromancer sells a Mangrove Hut map ("Alchemical Trade Route") for 24 emeralds.
  • The Cryomancer sells either an Impaled Icebreaker map ("Arctic Expedition Route") or an Ice Spider Den map ("Infested Ruin") for 32 emeralds. Which one appears is chosen with equal chance when the offer is generated.

Usage

Using a Furled Map on the right-click action starts a search for the nearest structure of its destination, within 100 chunks of the player. The item has a 50-tick (2.5 second) cooldown after each use, including failed uses.

The search result depends on the outcome:

  • Structure found: the Furled Map is replaced by a filled map at zoom level 2. The map has a red X at the structure's location and a rendered biome preview. If the Furled Map has a descriptor, the new map takes it as its custom name.
  • No structure in range: the Furled Map is replaced by an ordinary empty map. The furled map is lost.
  • Wrong dimension: the action bar shows "This map does not lead to anything in this dimension." The Furled Map is not used up.

Some maps are restricted to one dimension:

  • The Furled Map Citadel and the Legion Outpost map (from the Citadel bookshelf) only work in the Nether.
  • The Furled Map Ice Spider Den only works in the Overworld.
  • The Evoker Fort, Mangrove Hut, Impaled Icebreaker maps from trades and chests have no dimension restriction.

In creative mode, the result is added to the player's inventory instead of replacing the Furled Map.

The config option furledMapSkipsExistingChunks (default true) controls the search. Its description says it makes searches find only new structures and can affect performance.

Furled Maps are accepted by vanilla bookshelves and lecterns, which the mod lists in the bookshelf_books and lectern_books tags.
