The Staffs are a family of melee-capable spell-casting implements added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Each staff is a weapon that also acts as the focus for casting: holding right-click on a staff starts the spell currently selected on the spell bar, rather than performing a normal item use. Staffs differ mainly in their attack damage, their attribute bonuses and the school of magic they boost. The mod tags every staff as #irons_spellbooks:staff, which marks it as a magic implement and makes it enchantable like other melee weapons.
Staffs are the most common way to cast spells in the pack, since they combine a usable weapon with spell-power, mana-regeneration and cast-time bonuses. Most staffs are fire resistant, and the Blood Staff and Rod o' Lightning are the only staffs in this set that drop or are created by in-world events rather than by a basic crafting recipe.
Obtaining
Crafting
Several staffs can be crafted with the Arcane Essence, Mithril and Pyrium materials that the mod adds. The recipes above are the complete list for this set.
Loot and drops
| Item | Dropped by | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
The Blood Staff | The Dead King | killed_by_player, random_chance_with_enchanted_bonus |
The Blood Staff is dropped by the Dead King when it is killed by a player, with a chance that increases with the enchanted-bonus of the killing weapon. Staffs are not a common chest item, so they are most often found as a boss reward.
The Rod o' Lightning is not found naturally. It is made by using an Energized Core on a vanilla lightning rod during a thunderstorm (see below).
Usage
Casting
A staff casts whichever spell is selected on the spell bar, spell wheel or quick-cast keys. Casting spends mana, and the caster moves more slowly while the spell charges. Taking damage cancels a cast in progress unless the damage type is exempt, so staffs are best used when the caster is not under attack. Changing equipment, opening a container screen, logging out and dying also cancel a cast.
Each staff's spell power, school bonuses and mana regeneration are added to the wielder's stats while the staff is equipped, so a staff's effect depends on which spells the player casts through it. The bonuses are shown in the table below.
Rod o' Lightning
The Rod o' Lightning is made by using an Energized Core on a lightning rod block while it is thundering. The core is consumed, the lightning rod block is removed, a lightning bolt strikes the block, and the explosion has a radius of 3. The rod is then dropped as a glowing item. If the core is used when it is not thundering, the game shows a failure message and nothing happens.
Staff of the Nines
The Staff of the Nines is an Epic-rarity item that does not cast a spell. Using it fires a ray up to 64 blocks away. The first block or entity hit is struck; an entity takes magic damage equal to 10 multiplied by the wielder's spell power, with a blood particle effect. The use also gives a short camera shake and tilts the view upward by 6 to 9 degrees.
Items
Each staff shares the same enchantability and fire resistance. The attack damage values below are the base weapon values shown in the table.
- The Graybeard Staff is the starting staff. It has low damage and a bonus to Spell Power and mana regeneration.
- The Pyrium Staff is the strongest early-to-mid staff in the set for damage (9) and gives a bonus to fire spells.
- The Artificer's Cane has the highest cast-time and cooldown reductions in the set.
- The Ice Staff and Rod o' Lightning are Rare and Uncommon staffs that boost ice and lightning spells respectively.
- The Blood Staff has the highest base damage of the staffs (8) and boosts blood spells and summon damage.
- The Staff of the Nines is an Epic item with a special ray attack and no spell school bonus.
