Runes are crafting materials added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Each school of magic has its own rune, and the set also includes a generic Blank Runestone that every rune is inscribed from, plus a few utility runes for upgrades. Runes are used to make school armor, which is the main reason a player collects them, and to make upgrade orbs that add attribute bonuses to armor and spell books. The Cinderous Soul Rune is a separate block that is not used in any recipe. All runes stack to 64.
Obtaining
Blank Runestones are the base of every rune. They are found in structure chests and can also be made by removing the inscription from an existing rune.
Crafting
A rune is made in a 3x3 crafting grid with 8 matching items around a Blank Runestone in the centre. The Blank Runestone itself is made by crafting any inscribed rune together with a Shriving Stone, which returns the rune to a blank stone.
The inscribing ingredients are:
- Fire Rune: 8 Blaze Rods
- Ice Rune: 8 Frozen Bones
- Lightning Rune: 8 Bottles o' Lightning
- Ender Rune: 8 Ender Pearls
- Holy Rune: 8 Divine Pearls
- Blood Rune: 8 Blood Vials
- Evocation Rune: 8 Emeralds
- Arcane Rune: 8 Arcane Essence
- Recovery Rune: 8 Phantom Membranes
- Protective Rune: 8 Pufferfish
- Nature Rune: 8 Poisonous Potatoes

Loot and drops
Blank Runestones are added to the loot of several structure chests, and the chance per chest is listed in the table below. The highest chances are in the Catacombs (Dead King vault, 75.7% per chest, about 1.3 stacks on average), the Citadel vault (67.0%) and the Ice Spider Den basement (58.0%). Fear Nightfall's global loot modifiers also add Blank Runestones to chests from Better Fortresses, Better Desert Temples and Nova Structures' Witch Villa, and the pack extends Iron's Spells loot to the chests of its replacement structures.
The Evocation Rune can also drop from the Archevoker, which drops it only when killed by a player.

Usage
Runes are used only as crafting ingredients. In crafting they add a school's properties to armor and to upgrade orbs.
Crafting ingredient
Each school's armor is made by combining the school's rune with a Wizard armor piece and Arcane Essence, either in a crafting grid or at a smithing table. The school sets are:
- Fire Rune: Pyromancer Robe, Pyromancer Leggings, Pyromancer Hat
- Ice Rune: Cryomancer Hood, Cryomancer Boots, Cryomancer Leggings
- Lightning Rune: Electromancer Hat, Electromancer Robe, Electromancer Leggings
- Ender Rune: Shadow-Walker Armor, Shadow-Walker Boots
- Holy Rune: Priest Robes
- Blood Rune: Cultist Leggings, Cultist Boots
- Evocation Rune: Archevoker Coat, Archevoker Hat, Archevoker Boots
- Nature Rune: Plagued Mask, Plagued Coat, Plagued Leggings, Plagued Boots
The Arcane Rune, Recovery Rune and Protective Rune do not make armor. They are used for the Mana, Cooldown and Protection upgrade orbs instead. An upgrade orb of a given attribute is made from an Empty Upgrade Orb and 8 runes of that attribute, and the in-game guide states that both armor and spell books can be upgraded this way. The Arcane Rune is also used in the Greater Conjurer's Talisman. The full list of recipes that use each rune is shown in the table below.

Poisonward RingCinderous Soul Rune
The Cinderous Soul Rune is a block, not an item used in crafting. It is the keystone of the Cinderous Soulcaller arena. The Soulcaller only works when the player stands at or above the keystone (within 2 blocks of its height) and within the arena's 80-block exclusion box around it. The block has a hardness of 40 and a blast resistance of 1200, can be broken by any tool, emits light level 15, and has no loot table, so breaking it drops nothing.

- Blank Runestone is the base material for all runes and is the input for every rune recipe.
- Fire, Ice, Lightning, Ender, Holy, Blood, Evocation, Arcane and Nature runes each match one school of magic and are used in that school's armor.
- Recovery Rune and Protective Rune are used only for the Cooldown and Protection upgrade orbs.
- Cinderous Soul Rune is a block and is listed here only for completeness.
