The Better Stronghold is an underground structure added by YUNG's Better Strongholds that replaces the vanilla stronghold in Fear Nightfall. It is a multi-floor complex of stone-brick hallways, rooms, stairs and dead-end terminators, stocked with chests and armor that the mod and the pack provide. Vanilla strongholds never generate in this pack, so every stronghold a player finds is a Better Stronghold. It is located with an Eye of Ender, as the vanilla structure is, or with the /locate command.

The structure is a self-contained overhaul of one feature. It adds no items, blocks, mobs or recipes of its own. Its chests and armor stands draw from vanilla items and from the pack's loot additions, described in the Loot section below.

Generation

The Better Stronghold generates in the Overworld. Its placement does not use vanilla's concentric rings. It uses a custom random-spread placement with an in-game spacing of 163 chunks and a separation of 96 chunks, versus the jar default of 85 and 50. Candidate chunks from this grid are accepted only when their distance from world origin falls inside an odd-numbered ring band. Each band is 96 chunks thick; these ring settings are not changed by the pack's spread factor, which only scales spacing and separation. The first band runs from 80 to 176 chunks from origin, which is roughly 1,280 to 2,820 blocks. The next band begins at 272 chunks, and there is no limit on the number of bands. The gaps between bands are empty.

Because the first band starts about 1,280 blocks from the world origin, strongholds are uncommon near it. A 26 km² sample of the Overworld found none. Players should expect to travel a long way out to find one.

The structure needs a biome from the tag #betterstrongholds:has_structure/better_stronghold. That tag includes mountains, badlands, hills, taiga, jungle, forest, stony shore, mushroom fields, ice spikes, desert, savanna (including plateau and windswept variants), snowy plains, plains, sunflower plains, swamp, dripstone caves and lush caves. Ocean, river, beach and deep-ocean biomes are excluded. The tag also accepts matching biomes from the Forge, Common (c) and BYG tags, so many modded biomes qualify. The infobox lists the biomes resolved in this pack.

The start piece is placed at a Y level chosen uniformly between -30 and 11, with a maximum build height of 60. Terrain adaptation is set to bury at both the top and the bottom. The terrain around the structure's bounds is reshaped to fit it. Liquid handling is set to ignore waterlogging.

Layout

The complex grows outward from one start piece, the stronghold_anchor, and assembles up to 15 pieces deep. The pieces come from several template pools:

  • Hallways: straight, turning, and left and right variants, plus two wall pieces.
  • Doorways: seven doorway templates, including a version with two torches.
  • Stairs: five stair templates, including spiral stairs that span two or three floors.
  • Rooms: 16 room templates. These are an armory, grand and medium libraries, a prison, a crypt, a mess hall, a storeroom, bunks, a sealed cell that can collapse, a junction, a treasure room, two "CMD" rooms, and a trapped hallway.
  • Terminators: 27 dead-end templates that close off a branch.
  • Treasure: 24 corner, wall and portal pieces.
  • Statues: nine statue templates.
  • Portal room: a room with end portal frames.

Several processors change the templates as they are placed:

  • Pillars: yellow and orange stained-glass placeholders become stone bricks (sometimes mossy, cracked or infested) or cyan terracotta. A stone-brick pillar runs straight down through air and fluid to the build floor. Stair and slab rafters are placed at the first two levels. Pillars are not limited in length, so they can run through cave systems beneath a room.
  • Wall banners: placeholder banners become enderman-style, wither-style or portal-style banners.
  • Ores: nether gold ore placeholders become one of several ores. The weights are coal, iron, gold and lapis at 15 to 20 percent each, redstone at 15 percent, and emerald and diamond at 5 percent each.
  • Grand library blocks: purpur placeholders become iron, quartz, gold or diamond blocks in a 30, 30, 30 and 10 percent split.
  • Redstone: wire without a solid floor is given a stone-brick support block.
  • Filled portal frames: each end portal frame block has a 10 percent chance to spawn with an Eye of Ender. This is set by the config option Filled Portal Frame Chance.
  • Ruin: a config option that is off by default. When on, blocks next to air in the chunk are removed, so the complex loses pieces to nearby caves.

Inhabitants

The structure adds no spawn overrides and registers no entity types. Mobs appear only where the templates place them. The template scan found zombies, skeletons, spiders and silverfish. Spawner blocks inside the templates were not checked, so the presence of spawners is not confirmed.

Armor stands in the rooms are given equipment from configured pools. Ordinary stands draw from chainmail (30 percent), leather (10 percent) and iron (30 percent) helmets, with a 1 percent chance of a carved pumpkin. A stand wearing a diamond helmet is treated as a rare stand. Rare stands draw from a rarer set of pieces that includes diamond armor. Item frames are filled from two pools: iron-sword frames hold weapons and tools from the armory pool, and bread frames hold items from the storage pool. The equipment is written in a legacy NBT format, which may not apply in current versions. This has not been confirmed in game.

Loot

The chests use the mod's own loot tables, with the pack's additions on top. Several tables are worth seeking out:

  • CMD rooms: the "cmd_yung" chest always contains a diamond sword. Its rare rolls include a Ring of Invisibility, an Amulet of Concentration, a Poisonward Ring and a Rotten Spell Book, each at 1 percent.
  • Grand library: the chests reliably contain Smithing Templates, Scrolls and Ancient Knowledge Fragments. They also hold enchanted books and the higher-tier inks.
  • Crypt: the chests contain bone and bone meal, and have a 38 percent chance of a diamond.
  • Trap hallway: the chests give ender pearls, diamonds, emeralds and golden apples, each at 46 to 52 percent.
  • Armory: iron armor pieces and an iron sword appear at 11 to 13 percent each.

Iron's Spellbooks items such as Scrolls and Arcane Essence appear in many of the room chests. The chests were built without armor trims or the Blazing Fishing Rod. The pack later added trims at vanilla-like odds, and loot from Tide, Iron's Spellbooks and Traveler's Backpack was added to the chests. The generated table below lists the exact percentage for each item in every table.

Tips

  • To find a stronghold, throw an Eye of Ender, or run /locate structure betterstrongholds:stronghold. The command /locate structure minecraft:stronghold now returns an error.
  • Expect a long trip. The first ring starts about 1,280 blocks from the origin, so a search near spawn is unlikely to succeed.
  • Check every end portal frame for an Eye of Ender before crafting more. Each frame has a 10 percent chance of containing one.
  • The "Follow Ender Eye" advancement is awarded inside either type of stronghold, so the Better Stronghold counts for it.
  • Pillars run to the floor from the rooms above them. If a room looks like it is floating, look under it for a pillar.
  • The table below lists the exact percentage for each item in every chest table.
