YUNG's Better Structures

YUNG's Better Structures is a family of worldgen mods by YUNG that replace vanilla generated structures with larger, multi-room versions built from jigsaw templates. It covers the desert temple, dungeons, jungle temple, mineshafts, nether fortress, ocean monument, stronghold and witch hut, and adds river bridges. The structures are found while exploring, and most of them hold chests with loot.
Overview
The mods add no new items, blocks, recipes or enchantments. Each one changes what generates in the world and what the player finds inside. The structures use vanilla blocks, vanilla mobs and mostly vanilla loot tables, with a small number of new chest tables. Most mods turn off the matching vanilla structure by default, so the YUNG version is the only one that generates. Searching for the vanilla structure with /locate gives an error that points to the YUNG structure instead.
Each mod is built on the YUNG's API library, which supplies the jigsaw structure type, terrain adaptation and template processors. The API is a hard dependency and is not a content mod in its own right.
In Fear Nightfall, the structures carry the pack's horror theme. Their chests are extended with loot from other pack mods, and several are placed more often than their vanilla counterparts. See Structures for the full list of structures in the pack, and Finding Structures and Biomes for locating them.
Content
The mods add the following structures. Each has its own page with placement, biome and loot tables where the pack provides them.
Better Desert Temple
The Better Desert Temple replaces the desert pyramid in desert biomes. It is a large jigsaw temple with puzzle rooms, halls, a throne room, water mazes, tomb rooms, and mob rooms. Its boss is the Pharaoh, a husk with a fixed player-head skin and golden armour and sword. Its chests and item frames hold weapons, armour and food, with suspicious sand blocks to brush. See the mechanics section below for the Mining Fatigue effect applied inside uncleared temples.
Better Dungeons
The Better Dungeons mod replaces vanilla monster rooms with five underground dungeon types:
- Small Dungeon, the overworld replacement for the vanilla monster room, with spawners, chests and corner props.
- Zombie Dungeon, a catacomb with a staircase to the surface and a tombstone spawner.
- Skeleton Dungeon, a fortress of bridges and arches filled with skeletons.
- Spider Dungeon, a cave network generated in code, filled with spiders and cave spiders.
- Small Nether Dungeon, a nether variant that is disabled by default.
Better Jungle Temple
The Better Jungle Temple is a multi-floor redesign of the jungle temple. It has an entrance, two floors of rooms with pressure plates and puzzles, a pit, challenge rooms with statues, serpents and water parkour, and a treasure room. Dispensers in the rooms are filled with arrows or fire charges, and the treasure room chests hold diamonds, gold and emeralds.
Better Mineshafts
The Better Mineshafts mod adds thirteen biome-specific mineshaft variants. Each variant is placed in matching biomes, from oak and spruce variants in forests and taiga to mesa, desert, ice, mushroom and lush variants. Shafts have a vertical entrance, side tunnels, workstation rooms with furnaces and anvils, and cellars holding a cave spider spawner. Small tunnels occasionally end in an Abandoned Miners' Outpost with a zombie villager spawner, and the rest end in ore deposits. Chests use the vanilla abandoned mineshaft loot table.
Better Nether Fortress
The Better Nether Fortress is a single large fortress of up to 46 pieces. It has a keep, bridges, blaze rooms, halls and towers, and its chests use nine custom loot tables that contain vanilla items. Its monster spawns are blazes, zombified piglins, wither skeletons, skeletons and magma cubes. Item frames inside are randomised into weapon, loot, study, mess hall and alchemy pools. Monsters spawn on the nether bricks of the fortress.
Better Ocean Monument
The Better Ocean Monument replaces the ocean monument in deep oceans. It is built from parthenons, side and maze chambers, battle rooms, top domes and rings, and kelp and seagrass decoration. Its monsters are guardians, elder guardians and axolotls. Its loot is nautilus shells and prismarine shards and crystals, with the chests in the upper side chambers.
Better Stronghold
The Better Stronghold replaces the stronghold with a larger jigsaw structure with libraries, a prison, a crypt, an armoury, a mess hall, treasure rooms, statues and a portal room. Its chests use ten custom loot tables. Armour stands in the rare rooms are equipped from a separate, better pool. The stronghold layout is different from vanilla, and Eyes of Ender lead only to the new strongholds.
Witch Huts
The Witch Huts mod replaces the swamp hut with three hut templates: small, large and double-width. Each hut contains one witch and one cat. Brewing stands in the huts are filled with one of five ingredient-to-potion recipes. The mod also adds the Witch Circle, a ruin placed in swamps but not in mangrove swamps.
Bridges
The Bridges mod places stone and wooden bridges across rivers, in twenty-two variants. The wood type of each bridge matches its biome, so dark oak is used in badlands, spruce in taiga and jungle wood in jungles. Legs extend down through the water to the bottom of the river, so a bridge always stands on solid ground.
Mechanics
The structures themselves contain no new systems. Two behaviours are worth knowing.
- Mining Fatigue in the Better Desert Temple. While a survival player is inside an uncleared temple, the game applies Mining Fatigue III for 600 ticks. The check runs every 100 ticks. Killing the Pharaoh clears the temple permanently, and the Mining Fatigue is removed from players inside it. The temple is then a loot room with no slowdown. The advancements are "An Ancient Tomb" for entering a temple and "Eternal Slumber" for clearing it.
- Spawn placement. The desert temple and jungle temple are never placed within 48 blocks of an ocean or river, so they appear inland. The stronghold is placed on a new ring layout, and the Eye of Ender locates only the new stronghold. Eyes of Ender have a chance to spawn in each end portal frame of a stronghold, which is set in the config.
Mob spawns inside the structures are set by the structure itself. Monster spawns in a structure piece replace the default monster list while a player is inside that piece.
Changes to vanilla
Most of the mods disable their vanilla counterpart through a config option, which is on by default. The Better Dungeons mod removes the vanilla monster rooms from the biomes where its Small Dungeon generates. The affected vanilla structures are the desert pyramid, jungle temple, mineshaft, nether fortress, ocean monument, stronghold and swamp hut. Vanilla structure data is kept in the registry. Only placement is cancelled. Each /locate command for a disabled structure returns an error that names the replacement.
The Better Mineshafts mod also adds its thirteen variants to the vanilla mineshaft structure tag, so vanilla code that reads that tag sees the new variants. The mods do not change vanilla recipes, loot tables, villager trades, mob spawn rules or the player mechanics.
In Fear Nightfall
- Horror placement. The pack's horror structure change places the YUNG skeleton, spider and zombie dungeons about 30% closer together. Where a dungeon shares a structure set with other structures, it gets six times the weight. See Horror and Spooky Content.
- Loot. The replacement temples, fortresses and strongholds have their own chests, which lack the vanilla trims and the Blazing Fishing Rod. The pack adds trims at vanilla-like odds and extends Tide, Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks and Traveler's Backpack loot to these chests. Traveler's Backpack loot also reaches the YUNG chests. Loot is described in Loot and Chests.
- Biome tags. The Better Desert Temple and Better Witch Hut biome tags were extended to cover modded deserts and swamps, so these structures generate in biomes from Biomes O' Plenty and Regions Unexplored.
- Witch huts. The Better Witch Hut is one of several witch hut types in the shared set, including the vanilla, Luki's, Hexerei, Terralith and Dungeons and Taverns huts. The game chooses among the types valid for the local biome, so two huts never overlap.
- Pharaoh. The pack's Halloween event helmets were prevented from overwriting the Pharaoh's head, which is the boss identity check for the Better Desert Temple.
- Cave biomes. YUNG's Cave Biomes is a separate mod and is not covered here.
