The Better Ocean Monument is a deep-ocean structure added by YUNG's Better Ocean Monuments. It replaces the vanilla ocean monument, which this pack disables, so it is the only monument that generates in the deep oceans. Its interior is a large complex of prismarine chambers, maze rooms and parthenons, guarded by guardians and elder guardians. Its chest holds nautilus shells and prismarine material, along with a few rarer items. Players visit it mainly for the nautilus shells and prismarine, and for the rare drops in its chest.
Generation
The monument spawns only in deep ocean biomes: Deep Ocean, Deep Cold Ocean, Deep Lukewarm Ocean, Deep Frozen Ocean, Hyacinth Deeps and Deep Warm Ocean. It generates in the Overworld only. Placement uses random spread with an in-game spacing of 96 chunks (versus the mod default of about 50), so the structure is rare. In a 26 km² sample of the pack's world, no monument was found, so a player may need to explore several deep oceans to find one. The monument is not one of the horror structures that the pack places closer together.
Vanilla ocean monuments are disabled by default in this mod's configuration, and the pack keeps that default. No vanilla ocean monument generates, and the ocean explorer map target points to this structure instead. The /locate command for the vanilla monument returns an error that names the replacement, so use /locate structure betteroceanmonuments:ocean_monument instead.
Layout
The monument is built from pieces joined by a jigsaw system up to 20 pieces deep. The start piece sits between absolute Y 54 and Y 64. Every piece lies within 80 blocks of the centre of the structure. The pieces come from the following pools:
- Start: the piece that holds the chest and anchors the rest of the build.
- Lower middle chambers: three variants at the base of the monument.
- Side lower chambers: fourteen variants, including left and right maze chambers, vent chambers, dripstone chambers and a few rare chambers.
- Maze chamber battle rooms: ten variants of battle rooms placed in the maze chambers.
- Top domes and top rings: four variants each, forming the upper floors.
- Parthenons: five variants. The first is weighted far above the others and makes up most of the parthenon pieces.
- Outside walkway shrine: one variant, placed on the outside walkways.
- Kelp and seagrass decor: four pools of kelp and seagrass that fill the open water around the structure.
Several block types are placeholders that the mod replaces when the structure generates. Blue concrete becomes dark prismarine slabs, and lime concrete becomes prismarine slabs. Each slab is set at the top, the bottom or in the water at random, so the walls look uneven. Orange stained glass becomes a wet sponge 75% of the time and water 25% of the time. Yellow stained glass becomes gravel. Copper blocks oxidise at random, with roughly 10% exposed, 30% weathered and the rest oxidised. Air below sea level becomes water, and waterloggable blocks below sea level are waterlogged.
Inhabitants
The structure places guardians, elder guardians and axolotls in its pieces. Guardians also spawn under a spawn override set for the monster category, with a weight of 1 and a count of 1 to 3 guardians in each piece's bounding box. No other monster spawns are changed.
Guardians attack with a laser beam that drains health. Elder guardians are larger and are placed only by the structure's own pieces. Axolotls are placed as decor and do not attack.
Tridents thrown by the structure's own placed entities do not despawn while they stay inside the monument's pieces. Tridents thrown by a player despawn in the usual way.
Loot
Each monument has one chest, and it uses the loot table betteroceanmonuments:chests/upper_side_chamber. Nautilus shells are the main reward: the chest rolls 8 to 10 times and always gives nautilus shells. The chest also rolls 3 to 6 times for prismarine shards or prismarine crystals, and each roll gives 10 to 16 of the item.
The rarer items in the table are the most useful. Prismarine crystals appear in almost every chest, and prismarine shards come with them. Arcane Essence and a Scroll appear in roughly a third of chests or more, and some ink appears occasionally. The Heavy Chain, the Conjurer's Talisman and the Rotten Spell Book each appear in about 1% of chests and are the rarest drops.

Tips
Bring water breathing before you enter the monument, since all of it lies under deep water. Guardians fire from a distance, so keep track of them while you work through the open chambers.
The ocean explorer map points to the monument, so it is a good way to find one. If the map does not lead you to it, use /locate structure betteroceanmonuments:ocean_monument from a deep ocean biome.
The chest is in the start piece, and it is the first place to loot. The rest of the monument's chambers and parthenons contain the guardians and axolotls.
