The Otter is an aquatic mob added by Critters and Companions. Otters live in river water, where they swim freely, breathe underwater for a long time, and eat clams and fish. Otters are the source of pearls, which are used to craft Pearl Necklaces that speed up swimming and reduce how far some water mobs can detect the player.
Spawning
Otters spawn naturally in six river biomes, in groups of 2 to 4. The spawn rule only checks depth: an otter cannot spawn deeper than 15 blocks below sea level. Light level and time of day do not restrict spawning, so otters appear in the day and at night alike.
Otters spawned by a spawner have a 20% chance to appear with 1 to 3 baby otters. Baby otters are smaller and grow into adults.

Behavior
Otters are water creatures. Their maximum air supply is 9,600 ticks. When the air supply falls below 200 ticks, or on a 0.1% chance each tick while underwater, the otter swims to the surface to breathe.
Their main stats are:
- Health: 16 (8 hearts).
- Attack damage: 3 per bite.
- Movement speed: 0.25.
Otters use several AI goals, in order of priority:
- Panic. When an otter is hurt, it runs away at 1.6 times its normal speed.
- Avoid the attacker. An otter flees from the player who last hurt it, within 32 blocks, and walks away at 0.9 times its normal speed or sprints away at 1.5 times.
- Melee attack. Otters attack the fish they hunt at 1.2 times their normal speed, and bite for 3 damage.
- Hunting fish. Otters target schooling fish, such as Koi Fish, within 20 blocks. After an otter kills one, it waits 6,000 ticks (5 minutes) before hunting again.
Feeding works through the hand. An otter holds one food item in its main hand and eats it. Clams take 45 ticks to open. Other food takes 12 ticks. An otter that is already eating will not accept another food item. Otters accept clams and any item in the minecraft:fishes tag, which includes cod, salmon, tropical fish and pufferfish. They reject other items.
When an otter eats a clam, it has a 25% chance to drop a pearl from its mouth.
Adult otters can breed, using the same food they eat. Baby otters follow their parents and grow into adults. Breeding does not happen while an otter is eating.
Drops
Otters do not have a standard loot table. The main item they produce is the pearl, which drops when an otter opens a clam (see Behavior). Killing an otter gives 3 to 6 experience.
No item drops.
Related items
Otters tie into several items in the pack:
- Clam. Clams are the main food for otters and are stackable to 64. They can be found in shipwreck treasure, underwater ruin and other structure chests (see the table below). A clam can also be crafted into 3 bone meal, or a clam can replace a piece of drowned loot (50% chance). A drowned has a 5% chance to spawn holding a clam in its offhand.
- Pearl. Pearls come from otters opening clams. They are used to craft Pearl Necklaces and can also be crafted with popped chorus fruit into an ender pearl.
- Pearl Necklace I, II and III. Pearl Necklaces are worn in the Curios necklace slot. Each level adds 20% to swim speed. Each level also reduces the detection range of drowned by 10%. From level II, each level also reduces the detection range of guardians by 10%. A necklace needs 4 pearls for level I, then one more pearl for each higher level.
- Otter Spawn Egg. Spawns an otter. Spawn eggs are stackable to 64.
Clams and pearls are listed in the tables below.
| Item | Chest loot table | Structures | Chance per chest | Avg. stack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Clam | minecraft:chests/shipwreck_treasure | Bamboo Raft 1, Cherry Raft 1, Large Floating Island, Village Mediterranean +7 | 12.3% | 1.0 |

Tips
Otters are found only in rivers, so search river biomes for them. They spawn at night and day alike.
Keep clams in your inventory when you explore shipwrecks and ruins. A small number of clams gives a steady supply of pearls, and each pearl brings you closer to a Pearl Necklace.
An otter that has just killed a Koi Fish waits 5 minutes before it hunts fish again. Keep this in mind when you plan to use the same otter to clear a school of Koi.
