The Koi Fish is a passive water mob added by Critters and Companions. It is a schooling fish that lives in river biomes and is never hostile. Koi Fish are a source of food for cats and ocelots, and a group of them near a player grants the Luck effect, which makes Koi Fish a useful companion for players who fish or search for loot.

A Koi Fish has 8 health (four hearts) and a movement speed of 0.4. It is 0.6 blocks wide and 0.3 blocks tall. Koi Fish come in 21 color variants, and each one uses its own texture.

Spawning

Koi Fish spawn naturally in water in six river biomes: River, Muddy River, Frozen River, Cold River, Warm River and Tropical River. Each spawn places a group of 2 to 5 fish, and every river biome uses the same weight of 2. The mod adds no other natural spawns, so a player must find one of these river biomes to collect them naturally. The spawn table below lists the biomes, weights and group sizes.

Behavior

Koi Fish are schooling fish. They gather into schools of up to six members and swim together. They do not attack and cannot damage players or other mobs.

Koi Fish flee from Otters. A Koi Fish that sees an Otter within 8 blocks runs an avoid goal at priority 1 to move away from it.

Koi Fish that are out of water flop on the ground with a dedicated on-land animation and play the tropical fish flop sound.

Axolotls hunt Koi Fish, as they do other aquatic mobs.

Luck effect

Each server tick, the game checks the area within 10 blocks of every player (a box extending 10 blocks in each direction). If three or more living Koi Fish are inside that area, the player receives the Luck effect at level I for 210 ticks (10.5 seconds). The effect refreshes every tick while the condition holds, and it has no particles and no icon. The check runs on the server, so it applies in every game mode and is not limited to water.

Drops

Killing a Koi Fish always drops one Koi Fish item. The fish also has a 5% chance to drop one bone meal. The drop table is shown below.

Koi Fish can also come from fishing. The Critters and Companions fishing loot modifier has a 15% chance to replace one fishing result with either a Koi Fish or a clam, with equal weight for both. See Fishing for how the pack's fishing loot works.

The mob has three related items. The item table below lists their stats.

  • Koi Fish is the food item. It is a tropical fish food, and it is the item cats and ocelots eat. It stacks to 64.
  • Bucket of Koi Fish (Bucket of Koi Fish) captures one Koi Fish. Placing it in water releases the fish. It does not stack.
  • Koi Fish Spawn Egg (Koi Fish Spawn Egg) spawns one Koi Fish. It stacks to 64.

Tips

  • Keep three or more Koi Fish within 10 blocks while you fish or explore a river to get the Luck effect for as long as they stay close.
  • Use a bucket to move Koi Fish to a base or pond. Release them into any water source.
  • Keep Koi Fish away from Otters if you want a school to stay together, because Koi Fish scatter when an Otter comes close.
  • Cats and ocelots eat Koi Fish, so a stack of them is an easy way to feed tamed cats and ocelots.
