Stick Bug is a passive, tameable ambient mob added by Critters and Companions. It is a small forest insect with three color variants. It spawns on the ground in forests and in lush caves, and it never attacks. Its main uses are as a companion that a player can tame and as a bug that can be bred into a small group.

Stick bugs are harmless, so their presence is not a warning sign. Because they cannot defend themselves, a tamed bug is at risk in the dark forests that Fear Nightfall favors, where hostile mobs are common at night.

Spawning

Stick bugs spawn naturally in 41 biomes, which are forest-type biomes and lush caves. Natural spawns come in groups of one to two. The table below lists the weight and group size for each biome. Spawns use the vanilla spawn cap. A Stick Bug Spawn Egg (Stick Bug Spawn Egg) creates one stick bug.

Outside lush caves, a stick bug needs a block of the mod's bug spawn ground tag (dirt, sand, gravel and similar blocks) below it and a raw light level of at least 5. In lush caves, it needs a block light level above 0, and its floor must be a block of the bug spawn ground tag or stone.

Fear Nightfall weights Dark Forest 6× in its biome distribution. The biome covers a larger share of the land than in vanilla, so stick bugs are correspondingly more common in dark forests.

Behavior

A stick bug has 6 maximum health (3 hearts) and a movement speed of 0.15. It wanders, looks at players within 8 blocks, and floats in water. When it is hurt, it flees at 1.25 times its normal speed. It has no attack and drops no items when killed.

An untamed stick bug without a custom name can despawn when no player is near it.

Illagers avoid stick bugs. Each illager mob, such as a Pillager, Vindicator or Evoker, tries to move away from a stick bug within 8 blocks. The illager moves at its normal speed or sprints at 1.2 times that speed. This avoidance is added by the mod and applies to every illager, including those in Pillager Outposts.

Taming

A wild stick bug is attracted to any item in the vanilla leaves tag, so a player holding leaves draws the bug toward them at normal walking speed. Right-clicking a wild stick bug with a leaf item uses one leaf and gives the bug a 1 in 10 chance to become tame. A failed attempt still uses the leaf.

Once tame, a stick bug follows its owner at 1.4 times normal speed. It begins to follow when the owner is 10 blocks away and stops at 2 blocks. Right-clicking it with a leaf item heals it by 2 health (one heart) and uses one leaf. Right-clicking it with any other item toggles whether it sits. A sitting bug stays where it is. A tamed stick bug regenerates 1 health every 60 seconds while it is below full health.

Breeding

Two adult stick bugs that are fed leaves enter love mode and move toward each other at 1.25 times normal speed. A baby inherits the variant of its parents. A baby has 4 maximum health, which is half of an adult's health rounded up to an even number. It moves at half the adult speed and follows its parent at 1.25 times normal speed. If the parents are tamed, the baby is tamed with the same owner.

Dancing

A stick bug dances while a Jukebox plays a record nearby. It stops dancing when it moves more than 5 blocks from that jukebox.

Drops

No item drops.

Tips

  • Any item in the vanilla leaves tag can tame a stick bug or heal a tamed one. Each attempt has a 1 in 10 chance, so expect about ten leaves on average to tame one bug.
  • Tame a bug before breeding it. Only a tamed parent gives a tamed baby, so the owner keeps every baby.
  • Order a tamed bug to sit when it is not needed, so it does not follow you into danger.
  • Because it has only 6 health and cannot fight, keep a tamed stick bug away from illagers and from areas where hostile mobs gather at night.
