The Dumbo Octopus is a passive water creature added by Critters and Companions. It lives in the open ocean biomes of the Overworld, moves slowly, and never attacks. Its only notable behavior is that it can hold a nearby player's breath: when a player below 150 ticks of air supply comes within 6 blocks of one, the octopus swims over and keeps the player's air topped up at 150 ticks. It can be caught in a bucket, and it is harmless to players.

Spawning

The Dumbo Octopus spawns naturally in water in five vanilla ocean biomes: Ocean, Deep Ocean, Lukewarm Ocean, Deep Lukewarm Ocean and Warm Ocean. Each spawn is a single octopus; the spawn group size is always 1. The spawn weight is 4 in Ocean and Deep Ocean, 6 in Lukewarm Ocean and Deep Lukewarm Ocean, and 8 in Warm Ocean, so warm oceans produce the most octopuses. It is not tied to time of day, light level or difficulty, and it does not spawn on land or in any other biome. It belongs to the water ambient spawn category.

The spawn table is listed below.

Wild octopuses can despawn when they are far away from players, unless they are named or have been caught in a bucket. A bucketed octopus does not despawn.

Behavior

The Dumbo Octopus is a water animal with 14 health (7 hearts), a movement speed of 0.06, and a follow range of 16 blocks. It has no armor and no attack, so it does not fight other mobs or players. The mod adds it to the vanilla tag for water-breathing mobs, so it does not need air.

Its movement is restricted to water. When it is in water and not resting, it swims in random directions at speed 1.0 and pauses briefly between swims. It has four color variants, which are chosen when it spawns and are only visual.

Its AI has three goals, in priority order:

  1. Panic. When it is hurt, it flees at 1.5 times its normal speed. This goal overrides all other behavior, so a hit interrupts the octopus's breath-holding.
  2. Bubble the player. When a player is within 6 blocks and has an air supply below 150 ticks, the octopus moves toward that player and looks at them. Once it is within 2 blocks, it sends a bubble effect to the player and plays a sound. While the bubble is active, the player's air supply is set to 150 ticks every tick. The bubble lasts while the player is alive and their air is at or below 150 ticks. It ends when the octopus is interrupted by the panic goal or the player dies, and a bubble-pop sound plays. The goal does not check distance once it has started, so the octopus keeps pathing toward a player who swims away.
  3. Random swimming. The octopus swims to random points in its water, at speed 1.0, every 40 ticks on average. This is paused while the octopus is resting.

Resting is a separate state. While the octopus is in water and not bubbling a player, each tick has a 0.1% chance to start a rest of 200 to 600 ticks (10 to 30 seconds). While resting, the octopus does not swim and slowly sinks, with downward movement of 0.01 blocks per tick. It cannot start a swim until the rest ends. If it leaves the water, the rest ends immediately. It is always shown as an idle animation while resting and a swim animation while moving in water.

Bubbling and resting do not stack: a bubbling octopus never starts a rest.

Drops

The Dumbo Octopus has no loot table and drops nothing when it dies. The table below confirms this. It is not a food, material or crafting source. The only items tied to it are the bucket and spawn egg listed below.

No item drops.

  • Bucket of Dumbo Octopus: a bucket holding a Dumbo Octopus. It does not stack. Right-clicking an octopus with an empty bucket picks it up, and placing the bucket releases it.
  • Dumbo Octopus Spawn Egg: a spawn egg that stacks to 64 and summons an octopus when used.

The mod adds the octopus to the vanilla axolotl hunt tag, so axolotls will hunt it. The other aquatic creatures of the mod, Sea Bunny and Koi Fish, are on the same tag.

Tips

  • A bucketed octopus keeps its state, so it can be carried to a base or an underwater build and released there.
  • The bubble keeps a nearby player's air at 150 ticks. A player who is low on air and close to an octopus can stay underwater longer than they could alone, but the bubble does not give unlimited air.
  • Attacking an octopus makes it panic, which interrupts the bubble. Do not hit an octopus while it is bubbling you.
  • Axolotls will hunt octopuses. Keep axolotls away from octopuses you want to keep alive.
  • The octopus has 14 health and no armor, and killing it gives nothing. Leave it alone unless you want a bucket.
