The Jumping Spider is a tameable mob added by Critters and Companions. It is the only critter from that mod with real melee aggression toward other mobs. It has 14 health (7 hearts) and deals 8 attack damage, which is the strongest melee of any critter the mod adds. Players mainly use it as a source of silk, which is needed for the Grappling Hook and the Silk Lead, and as a tameable pet.

Spawning

The Jumping Spider spawns naturally as a single animal (group size 1) in forest, jungle and lush cave biomes, along with many other forest-type biomes. Its default spawn weight is 2 in forest and jungle biomes and 4 in lush caves. The spawns table below lists every biome it can appear in. It is not tied to a structure, a summon or a time of day, so it can be met at any hour, including at night in horror biomes that use forest or jungle terrain.

Silk Cocoon blocks, which the mod places in forest and jungle biomes and in Lush Caves, do not spawn the spider. They are a separate source of silk. See Critters and Companions for cocoon placement.

Behavior

The Jumping Spider uses the spider model and a standard animal AI with a few additions:

  • Leaping: When it stands on the ground with a target 2 to 4 blocks away, it launches itself toward the target. The leap sets a horizontal speed of 0.8 along the direction to the target and a vertical speed of 0.4 blocks per tick. It does not leap while it is ridden. After the leap, it keeps moving until it lands.
  • Melee: Once it has a target, it fights with standard melee attacks at 8 attack damage. Its base movement speed is 0.3, and its follow range is 16 blocks.
  • Fall damage: It takes 3 blocks less fall distance than other mobs, so short drops do not hurt it.
  • Cobwebs: It is not slowed by cobwebs.
  • Targeting when wild: An untamed Jumping Spider picks random targets among nearby Endermites and Silverfish (priority 1) and Dragonfly (priority 2). It ignores other mobs unless provoked.
  • Taming and feeding: It is tameable. It accepts Dragonfly Wings as its food item, and it can be sat and followed by its owner like other tamed critters. A tamed spider attacks any target that hurts its owner.
  • Effect on other mobs: Endermites and Silverfish (through injected avoid goals from the mod) flee from a Jumping Spider within 8 blocks. Dragonflies also avoid it.

The mod adds the Jumping Spider to the vanilla minecraft:arthropod entity type tag.

Drops

The Jumping Spider drops silk and spider eyes when it dies. Each drop is rolled independently, from 0 to 2 items each, so a single spider can drop nothing, one of each, or up to two of each.

Silk is the main reason to hunt this mob. Silk is also available from Silk Cocoon blocks, which the mod generates in forest and jungle biomes at 4 per chunk between Y 60 and Y 140, and in Lush Caves at 8 per chunk.

  • Silk is used in the Grappling Hook recipe with iron, and in the Silk Lead recipe with a slime ball. The Silk Lead can link a player to many mobs at once. Linked mobs are pulled toward the holder once they are more than 14 blocks away, and the link breaks past 28 blocks, dropping a Silk Lead.
  • Spider Eye is a vanilla item. The Jumping Spider drops it as a second loot entry.
  • Jumping Spider Spawn Egg spawns the mob directly, so players can place spiders in a base or test area without searching for a biome.

Tips

  • Carry Dragonfly Wings if you plan to feed, tame or breed a spider, since they are its food item.
  • Use the leap range to plan fights. A spider two to four blocks away will jump at you, so stand back until it is in the right range, or block its path with a fence or other obstacle that it cannot jump over.
  • Fight in open ground. The spider's leap and melee combined can deal heavy damage in a corridor.
  • Endermites and Silverfish make good decoys. A wild spider will stop to attack them, so they can separate it from a group of other mobs.
  • Silk Cocoon blocks in forest, jungle and lush cave terrain give silk without a fight. Spiders give a smaller, repeatable supply.
