The Snail is an ambient, tameable mob added by Critters and Companions. It has 16 health (8 hearts) and does not attack. It moves slowly, climbs walls, and can pull its body into a shell when ordered to sit. Players mostly encounter snails in forests and swamps, where they can be harvested for Snail Slime Bottles, a source of slimeballs and a brewing ingredient for Resistance potions.

Snails are not a threat at night. They have no attack, so the only danger they pose is to the player's time spent chasing them.

Spawning

Snails spawn naturally on the ground in 57 biomes. Most forest biomes use a weight of 5 with groups of 1 to 2. Swamp-type biomes such as Bayou, Muskeg and Floodplain use a weight of 10. Lush Caves use a weight of 8. The full list is in the table below.

Snails use the bug-type spawn rule of the mod. Outside Lush Caves a snail must stand on a block in the mod's bug spawn tag (dirt, sand, gravel and similar blocks) with a raw light level of at least 5. In Lush Caves the snail needs block light above 0, and its floor must be in the bug spawn tag or be stone. Lush Caves spawns are handled by a separate spawner and do not count toward the normal mob cap.

The Snail Spawn Egg spawns one snail and stacks to 64.

Behavior

Snails move at a movement speed of 0.1, which is slower than most passive mobs. Their knockback resistance is 0.5. They have the TamableAnimal AI with the following goals, in priority order: float, flee when hurt (speed 1.25), sit when ordered, breed (speed 1.25), tempt with leaves, follow a parent, follow the owner (speed 1.4), take a dancing stroll, look at players and look around.

Wall climbing. A snail that touches a solid block horizontally climbs it. While climbing, its upward speed is capped at half of its movement speed, which is 0.05 blocks per tick.

Hiding. When a snail is ordered to sit, it pulls into its shell and cannot move. While hiding it gains +10 armor and +0.4 knockback resistance, for a total knockback resistance of 0.9. Waking up takes 26 ticks (1.3 seconds), during which the snail is still immobile. A snail that is hiding plays a sitting animation and makes no ambient sounds.

Health regeneration. A tamed snail that is below full health regains 1 health every 60 seconds.

Baby snails. A baby snail has half of the adult maximum health, rounded to an even number, which is 8 health (4 hearts). Its health returns to the adult maximum when it grows up.

Despawning. A snail that is neither tamed nor named is removed when it is far from all players.

Gary. A snail named "Gary" (case-insensitive) uses its own idle, hurt, and purr sounds and a separate texture. It purrs when it is tamed or fed. Gary's ambient sound plays on an interval of 200 ticks.

Taming and feeding

Snails are tamed by right-clicking them with leaves (the snail tempt-item tag contains the leaves tag). Each leaf consumed gives a 1 in 10 chance of taming the snail. A failed attempt still uses up the leaf.

Once tamed, a snail accepts carrots (its food item) to heal 2 health (1 heart). Right-clicking a tamed snail with an item other than a carrot orders it to sit or stand, which makes it hide or come out of its shell. Carrots fed to a tamed snail owned by the player also put it in love for breeding. Wild snails do not respond to carrots. The baby takes its variant from its two parents, and inherits the owner if the parent is tamed.

Drops

Snails are harvested rather than killed. A player holding a glass bottle can right-click a snail to collect a Snail Slime Bottle. This works on tamed and wild snails alike. The snail is not harmed, and it then goes on a cooldown of 5 minutes (6,000 ticks) before it can be harvested again. The cooldown is saved with the snail's data. Each bottle stacks to 16.

The snail's death drops are in the table below.

No item drops.

The Snail Slime Bottle is the only item tied to the snail. Its uses are:

  • Slimeball. A Snail Slime Bottle crafts without other ingredients into one slimeball. The recipe is also registered as an advancement.
  • Resistance potions. Adding a Snail Slime Bottle to an awkward potion makes a Resistance potion with a duration of 3:00. Adding glowstone dust to Resistance makes Strong Resistance at level II with a duration of 1:30. Adding redstone to Resistance makes Long Resistance with a duration of 8:00.

Tips

  • To harvest slime bottles repeatedly, keep the snail near a base. Its 5-minute cooldown is the limit on yield, so harvesting several snails is faster than waiting on one.
  • Name a snail to keep it from despawning. Tamed snails also stay, because the despawn check only applies to untamed snails.
  • Feed a tamed snail carrots when it is hurt rather than waiting for its slow regeneration. The 1 health per 60 seconds rate is too slow for a fight.
  • A hiding snail has 10 extra armor and 0.9 total knockback resistance, but it cannot move until it wakes up, which takes 1.3 seconds.
