Muskeg is a cold, wet overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It has a temperature of 0 and a downfall of 0.6, so it is cold enough for snow but damp enough for swamp-style plants, standing water and mud. It is a rare surface biome in Fear Nightfall, and it is worth a visit mainly for its fish, its mud and willow resources, and its dead-tree landscape. Its night-time hostile mob table is heavy with common undead and skeleton mobs, so it is best crossed in daylight.

Description

Muskeg is a low, waterlogged landscape of snow-dusted ground and dark standing water. The sky is a pale blue (#7fa1ff), the fog is a cold white-blue (#c0d8ff) and the water is a deep blue (#3f76e4). The grass is a dull olive green (#94966e) and the foliage is a grey-green (#8d9b6b), which together give the biome a washed-out look rather than the lush green of a swamp. Snow falls here as precipitation, and the ground is patched with mud, so the terrain alternates between frozen ground and soft, muddy patches.

Vegetation is sparse and mostly low. Small brown mushrooms and grass patches are the most common plants, and swamp flowers and flowering lily pads appear on the water. Wild flax from Supplementaries grows on the land. The main trees are dead trees: the placed tree feature for Muskeg uses Biomes O' Plenty's dead twiglet tree, and about one tree in ten is the taller variant. Willow trees from Hexerei also appear, so the landscape is not entirely dead.

Muskeg's ambient sound is the standard cave ambience, which plays every 6000 ticks (5 minutes) when the player is within 8 blocks of a suitable block.

Generation

Muskeg generates in the cold, damp part of the overworld climate map, with a temperature of 0 and a downfall of 0.6. In Fear Nightfall it covers about 0.35% of the land surface. It is not among the biomes weighted 6× in the pack's horror biome table, so its share follows the general distribution rules.

Because it is rare, Muskeg is usually found as a small patch between larger snowy and wet biomes. Players looking for the biome specifically can use the pack's biome finder, Nature's Compass, rather than expecting to stumble on it.

The biome is tagged as icy by Tough As Nails (its icy_biomes tag), which places it among the cold biomes that mod's temperature system treats as cold. Up to 192 structure types can generate here. Structure spacing follows the pack's Sparse Structures settings, and the pack's overlap guard keeps the larger of two overlapping structures, so a single spot will not hold several full builds.

Features

Muskeg uses the standard vanilla overworld ore placements, which include iron, gold, coal, copper, redstone, lapis, gravel, dirt and the normal, buried, medium and large diamond variants. The biome also adds ores from other mods: infected diamond ore and Black Argillite from Born in Chaos, sulfur ore in deepslate and a sulfur regeneration feature from Butchery, and mithril ore from Iron's Spellbooks.

Biome-specific features include:

  • Mud disks and mud splatters: the patches of mud that give the ground its wet look.
  • Wild rice: from Farmer's Delight.
  • Willow trees and flowering lily pads: from Hexerei.
  • Swamp flowers: from Hexerei, on the ground.
  • Selenite geodes: from Hexerei, underground.
  • Cave urns: from Supplementaries, in caves.
  • Cliff features: from Stony Cliffs.
  • Dead twiglet trees: the main tree type, as described above.

The biome also has underground lava lakes, amethyst geodes and the standard monster room features, so caves below Muskeg can hold hostile mobs and loot.

Mobs and structures

Muskeg's hostile mob table is weighted toward the common undead and skeleton mobs. Spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies have the highest weights, and the pack's horror mobs such as the Ghoul (weight 25), Revenant (25) and Slime Golem (25) appear at lower weights. The rarest hostile mobs are the Dread Hound and Nightmare, each with a weight of 7, and the Krampus and Lifestealer, each with a weight of 1. Night-time spawns are the most dangerous part of the biome.

Passive and neutral mobs include Frogs (cold variant, weight 10), Box Turtles (11) and Shima Enagas (3) as creature spawns, Bats, Roly-Polys, Snails and Dragonflies as ambient spawns, and Glow Squid in underground water. The biome is tagged to allow Snow Foxes and White Rabbits. In water, the fish table includes Bluegill, Perch, Minnow, Brown Trout, Carp and Muskellunge, plus cave and deep-water fish such as Cave Eel, Deep Grouper and Shadow Snapper.

Structures here include a wide range of vanilla-style and modded builds. Among the most notable are the Iron's Spellbooks ice spider den and catacombs, Graveyard's altar and dead trees, several Born in Chaos grave and tower structures, and the Nova Structures bunker and deepslate camp. The full list is in the structure table below.

Tips

  • Cold effects from Tough As Nails apply here, so carry warm clothing or a heat source before crossing the biome.
  • Most hostile mobs spawn at night. Spiders and skeletons are common, so bring a ranged weapon and light the area around any camp.
  • Expect ice spiders in the Iron's Spellbooks ice spider den and its surrounding area.
  • The fish table includes several rare species, so Muskeg's water is a good place to fish.
  • Because Muskeg is rare, plan a visit on purpose if you need its fish, mud or willow resources.
  • Lava lakes and monster rooms can appear underground, so light caves before exploring them.
