Withered Abyss is a Nether biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is one of the five Nether biomes that mod adds. It is hot, dry and dark, with a near-black fog and grey-violet ground and plants. Its monsters are endermen and wither skeletons rather than the piglins and hoglins of the vanilla Nether, and it has a water body with its own set of fish, so it is a biome a player will pass through while exploring the Nether.

Endermen and wither skeletons are both hostile at all times in the Nether, so they are the mobs to plan for here.

Description

The biome has a fog colour of #0A0711, close to black, and grass and foliage colours of #312C36. Ground and plants therefore read as dark grey-violet rather than the orange and red of other Nether biomes.

The terrain uses the Nether's base layers, a bedrock floor and roof with netherrack as the top surface. The biome adds its features on top of this base; see Features below.

The water is coloured #3F76E4, a clear blue, which is a notable contrast with the rest of the biome.

The biome plays the Biomes O' Plenty track withered_abyss as its background music. Its ambient loop and mood sounds are the soul sand valley sounds from vanilla.

Generation

Biomes O' Plenty places Withered Abyss in its rare Nether region, which has a weight of 2 against 13 for the common Nether region. Its climate is hot and dry, with a temperature of 2.0 and a downfall of 0. The biome has no precipitation, so rain and snow never fall here.

Fear Nightfall replaces Biomes O' Plenty's placement with its own biome table. In that table, each climate cell is shared among every biome that is allowed there, by weight. How common Withered Abyss is in this pack is therefore shown by the share figure in the infobox, not by the mod's own weights.

Features

The biome adds these features under the surface:

  • Obsidian splatter
  • Blackstone spines and blackstone bulbs
  • Netherrack speleothems and blotted netherrack, from Nether Expansion
  • Pyroclast crusts, large and small, from Nether Expansion
  • Silt flint ore and silt replacement blocks, from Nether Expansion

The biome also has the Nether's default ores: gravel, blackstone, gold, quartz, and both large and small patches of ancient debris. Butchery adds its own deepslate sulfur ore and Sulfur regeneration features here, along with a generation feature for Salt (Butchery).

Mobs and structures

The biome's monster spawns are endermen, with a weight of 50 and groups of 4, and wither skeletons, with a weight of 50 and single spawns. Mutant Enderman, from Mutant Monsters, also spawns here with a weight of 2.

The water ambient spawns are a set of fish from Tide. The Blazing Swordfish has a weight of 2. The Ash Perch, Ember Koi and Magma Mackerel have a weight of 10. The Obsidian Pike and Volcano Tuna have a weight of 6. The Crimson Fangjaw, Inferno Guppy, Soulscale, Warped Guppy and Witherfin have a weight of 3. These fish are caught using the methods in Tide Fishing.

Structures that can generate here include Nether fortresses and bastion remnants, Ancient Battleground, Citadel, Nether Keep and Port, Nether Skeleton Towers and Camps and Mega Fossils. The full list of structures, their placement and their chest loot is in the tables below.

Tips

  • Endermen are hostile here. Looking directly at one makes it attack, so keep your line of sight away from them until you are ready to fight.
  • Wither skeletons inflict the Wither effect. Drinking milk removes it, so carry milk before crossing the open rock.
  • Snow golems melt in this biome, so do not rely on them for defence here.
  • Frogs that spawn here take the warm variant. Striders and siltmarram spawn as moist variants.
