Chapel and Sanctum are two Nether structures added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. The Chapel is a small, multi-piece building that can generate in fourteen Nether biomes. The Sanctum is a large complex built around a central church, with crypts, streets, an arena and a cipher puzzle. It generates only in Soul Sand Valley, Black Ice Glaciers and Withered Abyss. Both structures are placed by the mod's structure sets, and both hold mobs that are dangerous to a player who is not prepared for them.

Generation

Chapel

The Chapel uses random-spread placement with a spacing of 57 chunks and a separation of 19 chunks. The mod's default spacing is 30, and the pack's spread factor of 1.92 scales it to the in-game value shown in the infobox. Chapels can generate in these fourteen biomes: Soul Sand Valley, Nether Wastes, Crimson Forest, Black Ice Glaciers, Mycotoxic Undergrowth, Glistering Meadow, Infernal Holt, Blackstone Basin, Crystalline Chasm, Undergrowth, Erupting Inferno, Visceral Heap, Withered Abyss and Redstone Abyss. No Chapels were found in a 26 km² sample of the pack's Nether, so they are rare.

Sanctum

The Sanctum uses concentric-ring placement, which places its starting positions in rings around the world center rather than on a grid. It can generate in Soul Sand Valley, Black Ice Glaciers and Withered Abyss. No Sanctums were found in the same 26 km² sample, so they are also rare. The structure is built from many separate pieces and covers a much wider area than the Chapel. Its palette normally uses soul fire, but the pack's changes replace the soul fire blocks in that palette with Treacherous Fire, so the structure is lit by a different flame. The lower catacombs keep the normal soul fire.

Layout

Chapel

The Chapel is built from two template pieces, a root piece and a floor piece, placed by a multilayered jigsaw with a depth of one. Both pieces pass through the sanctum_destruction processor, which randomly converts some Soul Slate Bricks into Etched Soul Slate Bricks.

Sanctum

The Sanctum starts from a central church piece and grows outward through a set of jigsaw pools. The pieces fall into five groups:

  • Church. The center piece, with a large statue in its middle. The statue has a face on the front and on the back.
  • Crypt. A staircase from the surface leads down into tunnels (straight, turn and cross pieces). Rooms include a wart room, a breaker room, a respawn anchor room and rooms with brazier chests. Wall decor includes statues of the Ghoul, Ossified, Phase, Trample and Wretched types.
  • Street. Open-air pieces with gazebos, lamp posts and walls, a manhole, and roof braziers. Some roof braziers are broken, and one has a fortified variant with a secret room.
  • Arena. Several arena layouts (pyramid, sinkhole and a plain bland layout), each in normal, adventure, apocalypse and treacherous difficulty variants. Statue pieces are part of the arena set.
  • Cipher. Wall pieces with cipher symbols and clue pieces, which form the puzzle part of the structure.

Inhabitants

Chapel

The Chapel places skeletons and Vessels inside its rooms.

Sanctum

The Sanctum has its own monster spawn list. These mobs spawn across the whole structure, not only in one room:

Mob Weight Count per spawn
Skeleton 10 1 to 3
Vessel 5 1 to 2
Banshee 5 1
Apparition 7 1

The structure also places an antidote entity and a Carcass (Nether) in its templates. A carcass is a reanimating corpse. It can be brought back with flint and steel, and it is not hostile.

Vessels fire 16 to 20 bullets per attack, and they are fire-immune. Apparitions can possess mobs and gargoyle statues, and a possessed mob's death can release a new Apparition. Banshees stun a target for 100 ticks when they hit it, and they can teleport after a hit.

Loot

The Chapel's chest table always gives a Sanctum Locator Compass, which is the item the mod uses to find Sanctums. The Sanctum uses brazier chests and two supply tables.

Brazier chests are the Sanctum's main reward. Each one is locked until a Spark of Treachery is used on it. After it is opened, the chest's refill cooldown is 3600 ticks (three minutes). The brazier chest tables come in two variants, an exposed table and a hidden table. The hidden table always gives a Bottle o' Enchanting, and both tables always give an Enchanted Book. The rest of the loot is shown in the tables below.

Tips

  • Activate the compass before relying on it. The Sanctum Locator Compass must be activated before it works. Once it is bound to a Sanctum, it points to that Sanctum. An unbound compass searches for the nearest Sanctum within 100 chunks.
  • Prepare for the Sanctum's mobs. Carry a water bottle to exorcise an Apparition. A Banshee's stun lasts 100 ticks after each hit it lands, so keep track of its attacks.
  • Plan the brazier chests. You need a Spark of Treachery to open each locked brazier chest. Each chest has a 3600-tick cooldown before it refills, so you can return to it later.
  • Start with the Chapel. Chapels are rare, but each one's chest always gives a Sanctum Locator Compass, which you need to find a Sanctum.
