Wisp (Nether) is a small, passive, flying ambient mob added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. Wisps never attack. They are found around Ecto Soul Sand in Soul Sand Valley, can be captured in a glass bottle as a Bottle of Wisp, and are used to craft Will O' Wisps, the projectiles that the Banshee fires. Wisps are most often met near Ecto Soul Sand, and they leave the world when they burrow, are exorcised or are bottled.
Spawning
The mod adds no biome spawn entries for wisps, so they do not appear in biomes on their own. Each wisp comes from one of three sources:
- Ecto Soul Sand. Ecto Soul Sand is a block generated in Soul Sand Valley. On each random tick, a block with a solid block beneath it has a 2% chance (config
wispEmergingChance) to release one wisp into an adjacent empty space. With the vanilla random tick speed of 3, this works out to roughly one wisp per block about once an hour of game time. - Brushing. Brushing an Ecto Soul Sand block that has air directly above it gives a 7% chance (config
wispEmergingChanceBrush) to tickle a wisp out. Each brush use costs 4 durability (configectoSoulSandBrushDamage). Brushing can be turned off withbrushWispsOut. - Apparitions. An Apparition disperses 2 wisps when it dies, by default (config
wispsDroppedByApparition).
When a wisp emerges from Ecto Soul Sand, the block is converted by default (config convertsToSuspiciousSoulSand). It becomes suspicious soul sand, which can be brushed for archaeology loot. In Soul Sand Valley, the loot table includes bone, gunpowder, quartz, arrows, Stridite, Fossil Fuel, Wraithing Flesh and, with a low weight, a Spirit armor trim smithing template. With the conversion setting turned off, the block reverts to plain soul sand instead.
Honeycomb salts an Ecto Soul Sand block (see Tips). A salted block stops releasing wisps on its own, but it can still be brushed.
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
Behavior
A wisp has 2 health (one heart), a flying speed of 1.2, a walking speed of 0.4 and a follow range of 16 blocks. Its hitbox is 0.5 by 0.6 blocks. It is immune to fire, takes no fall damage, and drops 1 experience point on death. Its attack damage attribute is 2, but it has no attack goal, so it never attacks.
Movement. When it has no path, a wisp has a 1 in 10 chance each tick to pick a hover point nearby and fly to it. Its pathfinding avoids lava and water. It is drawn toward players who hold an item in the piglin repellent item tag (the tag includes Supplementaries' soul sconce).
Fleeing. Within 8 blocks of a piglin, a piglin brute or a hoglin, a wisp runs away from it.
Boredom and burrowing. A free wisp gains one boredom point every second with a 2% chance (config wispBoredomChance), up to a maximum of 6. A wisp that emerged from Ecto Soul Sand starts with 0 or 1 points. Once it has more than 5 points, the wisp searches up to 16 blocks for a plain soul sand block, flies to it and converts that block into Ecto Soul Sand. It then disappears in a puff of soul particles. On average, a wisp needs about five minutes of game time to reach that point. This burrowing is how the mod keeps producing wisps in Soul Sand Valley.
A wisp cannot get bored while it is:
- salted;
- leashed;
- given a custom name.
A wisp that cannot get bored is also never removed for being far from players.
Salting. Right-clicking a wisp with honeycomb salts it. The honeycomb is consumed and the wisp shows wax particles. A salted wisp stops getting bored, will not burrow, and is kept in the world permanently.
Water and rain. A wisp that is in water or exposed to rain is exorcised at once. It is removed with a sound and a particle effect, and it leaves no drop.
Projectiles. Most projectiles pass straight through a wisp, including thrown items, snowballs and ordinary arrows. Only piercing arrows, such as arrows with the Piercing enchantment, still hit it. This comes from the pass-through setting (projectilesPhaseThroughGhosts), which is on by default.
Silver weapons. Weapons in the c:silver_weapons item tag deal 1.8 times damage to a wisp by default (config silverParanormalDamageMultiplier). Each such hit also applies Slowness V for 3 seconds (config silverInflictsParanormalSlowness, on by default).
Bottling. An empty glass bottle used on a wisp captures it as a Bottle of Wisp. The bottle does not stack, and it keeps the wisp's custom name, health and flags such as glowing and invulnerability. Using a Bottle of Wisp on a block face releases the wisp at that spot and returns a glass bottle.
Drops
Wisps have no loot table of their own, and killing one gives only 1 experience point. The table below is generated from game data for this mob.
No item drops.

The Bottle of Wisp (
Bottle of Wisp) is the item that holds a captured wisp. It is one of the ingredients for Will O' Wisps (
Will O' Wisp). The Will O' Wisp recipe uses four Banshee Powder around a Bottle of Wisp, in a cross shape, to make four Will O' Wisps. Will O' Wisps stack to 64 by default (config willOWispStackSize).
The Wisp Spawn Egg (
Wisp Spawn Egg) stacks to 64 and places a wisp directly.
Tips
- Keep several glass bottles in the inventory before going to Soul Sand Valley. Each Bottle of Wisp holds exactly one wisp.
- Salt a wisp with honeycomb to keep it in place for good. A leash or a name tag also stops it from burrowing.
- Ecto Soul Sand needs a solid block under it to release wisps, so check the block below before building around one. Brushing a block with air above it is much faster than waiting, but each brush use costs 4 durability.
- Salting an Ecto Soul Sand block with honeycomb stops its passive release, so salt only the blocks you want to keep quiet.
- Water and rain remove a wisp instantly. Keep wisps away from water if you want them to stay.
- Piglins, piglin brutes and hoglins push wisps away, so a wisp near them will not come to you.
- Silver weapons deal extra damage to wisps and slow them, which helps when a wisp is in the way.
