The Banshee is a hostile, fire-immune mob added by Jaden's Nether Expansion. It hovers when it has a target, fires Will O' Wisps at players, and teleports often, which makes it hard to pin down in melee. In the Fear Nightfall pack it is found in the sanctum structure in Soul Sand Valley, where it is one of four monster types that the structure spawns. Banshees drop the Banshee Rod, the base ingredient for Banshee Powder, which is used in several of the mod's craftable items.

Spawning

The Banshee is not in any biome's natural spawn table. Soul Sand Valley gives it a spawn cost but no spawn entry, so it does not appear there through ordinary natural spawning. The mob is placed by the sanctum structure. Sanctums are placed by concentric rings in Soul Sand Valley (spacing 32 chunks, spread 3, 256 candidate positions, preferring biomes tagged for sanctums). Within a sanctum, the monster spawn list uses these weights:

Monster Weight Count per spawn
Skeleton 10 1-3
Vessel 5 1-2
Banshee 5 1
Apparition 7 1

A banshee therefore makes up 5 of the 27 weight in the sanctum's list. Sanctums are located with the Sanctum Compass.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Banshees can also produce another mob. When a banshee dies, it has a 15% chance (the default bansheeUnleashingOdds) to unleash an Apparition. The config option hardDifficultyUnleashingMultiplier (default 2.0) increases these odds on Hard difficulty.

Behavior

  • Stats: 20 health (10 hearts), movement speed 0.26, follow range 26 blocks, attack damage attribute 6. It is immune to fire and to fall damage. Piglins are afraid of it.
  • Targeting: It attacks players and piglins, and it retaliates against any entity that hurts it.
  • Movement: While it has a target it turns off gravity and hovers. Without a target it wanders.
  • Attacks: It has no melee attack. It fires a Will O' Wisp at its target whenever its attack timer reaches zero. The timer only counts down while the target is within about 24.5 blocks. After each shot, the timer resets to 40 ticks plus a random 0-30 ticks (bansheeAttackInterval 40, bansheeAttackIntervalBonus 30).
  • Teleporting: About one second after each shot, the banshee teleports. It also teleports whenever an entity hurts it (bansheeTeleportsAfterHit, default on). Each hit also delays the attack timer by 10 ticks (bansheeAttackIntervalStagger). When it acquires a target, the banshee records its current position as an anchor. Every third teleport, counting the first, goes to that anchor (bansheeAnchorInterval, default 3; the interval is one less on Easy and one more on Hard). Other teleports go to a random empty block within 6 blocks horizontally and 3 blocks vertically.
  • Will O' Wisp projectiles: The banshee's wisps accelerate toward a top speed of 16 blocks per second and turn with a maneuverability of 0.2 (bansheeWillOWispManoeuvrability). If the difficulty-scaling option is enabled, this value is 0.05 lower on Easy and 0.04 higher on Hard.
  • Self-stun: If one of a banshee's own Will O' Wisps strikes that banshee, the banshee is stunned for 100 ticks (5 seconds, bansheeStunTimer). A stunned banshee cannot fire. This is the default behavior, and the config option bansheeRedirectBehavior can instead make the hit kill the banshee. Each such hit also grants the Banshee Redirect advancement to players in range.

Drops

A banshee drops a Banshee Rod only when it is killed by a player. Without Looting, the drop is 0 or 1 rod. Each level of Looting adds a further 0 to 1 rod. A banshee gives 10 experience when killed.

  • Banshee Rod is only obtained from banshees. It has no crafting recipe.
  • Banshee Powder is crafted from one Banshee Rod into two powder. Banshee Powder is used in:
    • the Will O' Wisp recipe (four powder and a Bottle of Wisp make four Will O' Wisps);
    • the Phasmo Shard recipe (one powder and one slimeball make two Phasmo Shards);
    • the Wraithing Flesh recipe;
    • the Strength brewing recipe for an antidote.
  • Banshee Spawn Egg spawns one banshee.

Tips

  • A banshee is immune to fire and fall damage, so lava, fire and jumping from heights will not hurt it. Ranged attacks avoid the need to stay next to it.
  • Because the banshee teleports after each hit, a melee chase is often interrupted. Expect to re-close the distance after each hit.
  • Its Will O' Wisps turn toward their target, so stepping out of the line of fire does not stop them for long.
  • Piglins are afraid of banshees and will flee from them rather than help fight.
  • A stunned banshee cannot fire for 5 seconds, which is the best window for melee damage.
