Fossil Fuel and Fossil Ore are three entries added by Jaden's Nether Expansion: the Fossil Fuel item, the Fossil Ore block and the Fossil Fuel Ore block. They belong to the Soul Sand Valley biome of the Nether. Fossil Fuel is a stackable fuel that also replaces coal in several recipes. The two blocks are the main source of the item: Fossil Ore slowly turns into Fossil Fuel Ore when it is buried, and Fossil Fuel Ore drops Fossil Fuel when mined.
Obtaining
Natural generation
Fossil Ore and Fossil Fuel Ore generate underground in Soul Sand Valley and replace soul soil blocks. Both are placed as underground decoration, 64 attempts per chunk, between 4 blocks above the bottom and 4 blocks below the top of the dimension.
- Fossil Ore forms clusters of up to 3 blocks, and 20% of the blocks in a cluster that are exposed to air are discarded.
- Fossil Fuel Ore forms clusters of up to 8 blocks, and 50% of the blocks in a cluster that are exposed to air are discarded.
- Fossil Fuel Ore also generates in the Black Ice Glaciers sub-biome. Fossil Ore is not listed for that biome.
Both ore generators can be turned off in the mod config (fossilOre and fossilFuelOre, both on by default).
Skeleton death conversion
When a skeleton-type mob dies while standing on soul soil, the soul soil under it becomes an ore block. Any mob in the skeletons tag becomes Fossil Ore, except Wither Skeletons. The mod adds Vessel to that tag, so Vessels convert too. A Wither Skeleton that dies on soul soil creates Fossil Fuel Ore instead. The two conversions are controlled by the skeletonFossilization and witherSkeletonFossilization config options, both on by default. The conversion changes only the block; it drops nothing.
Buried conversion
Fossil Ore is a random-tick block. On each random tick it has a 2% chance (the fossilOreConversionChance config option, default 0.02) to turn into Fossil Fuel Ore, but only if all six neighbouring blocks are solid. An exposed Fossil Ore block with any open face does not convert. Conversion plays a fossilization sound.
Brushing Ecto Soul Sand
Fossil Fuel can also be found by brushing. Ecto Soul Sand in Soul Sand Valley has a 2% chance on each random tick to release a Wisp and turn into Suspicious Soul Sand, which can be brushed for loot. The Soul Sand Valley loot table has 11 entries with a combined weight of 76. Fossil Fuel has weight 10, so each brushing gives Fossil Fuel about 13% of the time, in a stack of 2 to 4.
Mining
Both ore blocks have a hardness of 0.6, a blast resistance of 0.6 and a shovel tool type.
- Fossil Ore drops bone without Silk Touch, and the drop is affected by explosions. With Silk Touch it drops the Fossil Ore block itself. It gives no experience.
- Fossil Fuel Ore drops Fossil Fuel without Silk Touch, with Fortune applied to the drop and explosion decay. With Silk Touch it drops the block. It gives 0 to 2 experience.
Breaking Fossil Fuel Ore grants the Gravedigger advancement, which is part of the Soul Sand Valley advancement tree.
Usage
Fossil Fuel is a stackable item with a stack size of 64. It is not craftable, so it can only be obtained through the methods above.
Fuel
In a furnace, Fossil Fuel burns for 1600 ticks (80 seconds) per item. Jaden's Nether Expansion also removes the Claret Wood items from the furnace fuel list.
Coal substitute
Fossil Fuel is in the common coal tag (c:coal), so recipes that accept coal by that tag also accept Fossil Fuel. The mod adds several recipes that use it directly:
- A torch recipe: Fossil Fuel over a stick makes 4 torches.
- A soul torch recipe: Fossil Fuel over a stick over a soul fire base block makes 4 soul torches.
- A treacherous torch recipe: Fossil Fuel over a stick over Treacherous Wax makes 4 treacherous torches.
- A brown dye recipe: Fossil Fuel and a white dye, in any arrangement, make 2 brown dye.
Crafting ingredient
The table below lists every recipe that uses Fossil Fuel, including the Coal Golem recipe, which accepts coal or its alternatives.

Items
- Fossil Fuel is the item players carry. It is a furnace fuel and a coal substitute.
- Fossil Ore is the first stage of the ore pair. It drops bone and turns into Fossil Fuel Ore when buried.
- Fossil Fuel Ore is the block that drops Fossil Fuel. It can be found in Soul Sand Valley, in Black Ice Glaciers, and through skeleton and Wither Skeleton deaths on soul soil.
