Backpacks are wearable and placeable storage items added by the Traveler's Backpack mod. The mod adds about 45 backpack variants in five material tiers (Leather, Iron, Gold, Diamond and Netherite), themed variants that take their look from vanilla mobs and blocks, and a shared upgrade system that adds crafting, smelting, auto-pickup and other functions. A worn backpack adds inventory space and, for many variants, a passive bonus called an ability. Several hostile mobs can spawn carrying one.
Obtaining
Backpacks are not generated as terrain. They come from crafting, Smithing Table upgrades, chest loot, villager trades and mob equipment. The Standard Traveler's Backpack is the base for almost every other variant, so it is the first backpack most players make.

Smithing Table · SmithingThe base Standard Traveler's Backpack is crafted from four Leather, a String and a Chest. Variant recipes add two Backpack Tanks and a sleeping bag of any colour, as the table shows. Each other crafted backpack combines a Standard backpack with a material; the table lists the exact inputs. Gold, Iron, Diamond and Emerald backpacks are made from four ingots or gems, and the Lapis, Quartz and End backpacks each need a second material.
Tiers above Standard are normally made with a Smithing Table. The recipe combines Leather, the matching tier upgrade and a backpack of the lower tier. The Netherite recipe instead uses a Diamond backpack, a Netherite Ingot and a smithing template. Mob-themed backpacks are also made at a Smithing Table, with one mob-part ingredient per variant.
Loot and drops
27 chest sources, 0 mob drops
The mod adds Standard backpacks and tier upgrades to several vanilla chest loot tables. These include the Abandoned Mineshaft (also a Bat backpack), Desert Pyramid, Simple Dungeon, Woodland Mansion, Bastion Treasure, Nether Bridge, End City Treasure, Shipwreck Treasure and Pillager Outpost. The Pillager Outpost adds an Iron Golem backpack at a 75% roll chance. Standard backpacks from loot are dyed a random colour 66% of the time.
Fear Nightfall changes the loot for this mod in one place. The replacement temples, fortresses and strongholds from the YUNG mods have their own chests, and the pack copies the Traveler's Backpack loot into those chests with the same items and chances. The mod only adds loot to tables whose names match vanilla exactly, so without this change its loot would not reach those chests.
Trading
| Trader | Level | Cost | Result | Max uses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Librarian | 3 | Emerald ×64 | Villager Traveler's Backpack ×1 | 1 |
| Librarian | 3 | Emerald ×55 | Villager Traveler's Backpack ×1 | 1 |
| Librarian | 3 | Emerald ×51 | Villager Traveler's Backpack ×1 | 1 |
A Librarian villager offers one Traveler's Backpack for 48 to 111 emeralds. The trade has one use, gives 50 experience and uses a price multiplier of 0.5. The trade can be disabled by config.
Mob equipment
Zombies, skeletons and endermen in the Overworld, and piglins and wither skeletons in the Nether, can spawn with a backpack in their chest slot. The default spawn chance is 0.5%. The Overworld list contains 29 backpack variants and the Nether list contains six. A spawned backpack gets a random sleeping bag colour, a 50% chance of a Tanks upgrade and a 75% chance of random dye. A mob drops its backpack on death only if a player killed it.
Usage
A backpack is worn in the back slot. Only one can be worn at a time; equipping a second one shows the message "Other backpack is already worn". Right-clicking a backpack equips it by default, and right-click unequipping is off by default. Worn backpacks are placed in the back slot through the Curios or Accessories integration when that mod is installed, or through the Back slot button in the player inventory otherwise.
Storage and tiers
The storage size depends on the tier. A Leather backpack has 27 storage slots, two upgrade slots and two tool slots. Iron has 45, three and three; Gold has 63, four and four; Diamond has 81, five and five; Netherite has 99, six and six. Each fluid tank row holds 1000 units in every tier. A Blank Upgrade, applied to a placed backpack by shift-clicking it, resets the backpack to the Leather tier and drops its contents.
Upgrades
Upgrades are installed in the upgrade slots and turned on or off with keybinds for the first to fourth upgrade slots. See Backpack Upgrades for the full list. The functional upgrades are:
- Tanks: two fluid tanks.
- Crafting, Furnace, Smoker and Blast Furnace: the matching crafting or smelting station in the backpack screen.
- Pickup: picks up ground items into the backpack and cancels vanilla pickup for matched items.
- Magnet: pulls items within 5 blocks every 10 ticks, with a 9-slot filter.
- Void: destroys items that enter through Pickup or hoppers, with a trash slot and filters.
- Feeding: eats food from the backpack every 100 ticks, with a 9-slot filter.
- Refill: moves selected items into the player's inventory every 5 ticks, with a 9-slot filter.
- Jukebox and Lantern: play discs, and emit light. The lantern's dynamic lighting only works with the LambDynamicLights mod.
Each functional upgrade can be disabled by config.
Sleeping bags
A sleeping bag attaches to a placed backpack when it is shift-right-clicked on the backpack. The "Use Sleeping Bag" button in the backpack screen places the bag next to the backpack. Setting the spawn point to a sleeping bag is blocked by default. When the quick sleeping bag option is on, the placed bag is removed on waking if its backpack is gone.
Tools and hose
The tool slots accept a diamond pickaxe and any item in the #c:tools tag. Other items are rejected by default, and Shulker Boxes are disallowed by default. The cycle-tool keybind swaps the tool slots into the hotbar. The Hose, with a Backpack Tank and a Hose Nozzle, works in three modes: Suck, Spill and Drink. The Hose Nozzle selects which tank the hose uses.
Abilities
Many worn backpacks have an ability. Abilities are enabled by default in the config, and each one can be toggled with its own keybind. The abilities are:
- Netherite +4, Diamond +3, Iron +2 and Gold +2 armour.
- Emerald: +1 Luck.
- Enderman: +1 block and entity interaction range. Pumpkin: cancels Enderman anger toward the wearer.
- Lapis: doubles the value of 15% of the XP orbs the wearer picks up.
- Warden: +4 maximum health. Its hits apply Slowness II for 2 seconds.
- Fox: +10% movement speed.
- Creeper: on lethal damage, the wearer survives at 1 health, loses all effects and gains Regeneration I (450 ticks), Absorption II (100 ticks) and Fire Resistance (400 ticks). A 3.0-power explosion with no block damage then goes off at the player. The cooldown is 1200 to 1800 ticks.
- Blaze: fireballs that hit the wearer are discarded, and falls of 3 or more blocks do not deal damage.
- Ghast: Ghasts do not retarget the wearer unless the wearer hurt them.
- Wither: the wearer's melee hits apply Wither II for 3 seconds, and the wearer's own Wither effect is removed each tick.
- Bee: each melee hit deals 1.0 extra damage and applies Poison I for 4 seconds.
- Spider: lets the wearer climb walls and stops elytra flight on collision.
- Cow: clears harmful effects, restores 20 food and grants Regeneration I for 10 seconds. The cooldown is 480 to 540 ticks.
- Chicken, Cake and Melon: have cooldowns of 360 to 600, 360 to 480 and 120 to 480 ticks.
- Hay: breaking grass has a 15% chance to drop a carrot, potato or beetroot, and breaking a fully grown crop has a 40% chance to double its drop.
Some backpacks grant a timed effect while worn: Bat grants Night Vision, Magma Cube grants Fire Resistance, Squid grants Water Breathing and Night Vision, Dragon grants Regeneration and Strength, and Fox grants Jump Boost. Each lasts 250 to 300 ticks, roughly 12 to 15 seconds. The Quartz backpack's Haste is not enabled by default.
Death
A backpack stays on the player when Keep Inventory is on. Otherwise, the backpack is placed as a block where the player died. If there is no room, it drops as an item and a chat message reports the drop. With Curios or Accessories installed, the backpack stays in the back slot and a backup is saved. Operators can restore it with /tb restore.
Backpack items also resist the environment as dropped items. They do not despawn, cannot be destroyed by fire or explosions, and are invulnerable by default. Void protection stops them from falling out of the world.
Items
Notable items on this page are listed below. The table is generated from game data.
- Standard Traveler's Backpack is the base for every crafted and smithed variant. It is the only backpack that is dyeable.
- Netherite Traveler's Backpack has the highest tier, with 99 storage slots and +4 armour when worn.
- Creeper Traveler's Backpack carries the survival ability described above.
- Warden Traveler's Backpack adds health and applies Slowness on hit.
