Stray Fort is a walled fortress added by Dungeons and Taverns and placed on the surface of snowy biomes. Its interior is held by strays, which are the only hostile mob type the fort spawns, so it is a dangerous place to enter at any time of day. The fort holds three chest loot tables, a decorated pot table and a set of exploration map loot, so it is also one of the more useful snow-biome structures for early gear.

Generation

The fort is a jigsaw structure in the #nova_structures:collections/snowy_structures biome tag. Its placement covers biomes such as Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga, Snowy Badlands, Cold Desert, Tundra, Alpine Grove, Spires and Icy Heights, about 30 biome types in total. It is placed on the surface and fitted to the ground by a beard-box terrain adaptation, which fills gaps under the walls on slopes.

The fort shares a structure set with the Lone Citadel, at a weight of 9 for the fort against 1 for the citadel, so roughly 9 of every 10 placements in that set are forts. The in-game spacing is 288 chunks with a separation of 46 chunks. The pack's Sparse Structures setting thins non-horror structures, and the fort is not a horror structure, so it is uncommon. A 26 km² survey of the server world found none. Search near large snowy biomes instead of expecting one in every snowfield.

From outside, the fort is a rectangular stone compound with cobblestone and mossy stone brick walls, spruce log and plank trim, and a gate in one wall. The keep rises above the walls and can be seen from a distance across open snow.

Layout

The fort is a walled compound around a central plaza. Three keep layouts, stray_fort_1, stray_fort_2 and stray_fort_3, are chosen with equal weight. Each keep contains a fortress building, a rear section and connectors to the plaza and walls. The compound's pieces use stone brick and spruce, with ladders, trapdoors and glass panes.

The walls come in straight, gate, short gate, and corner variants, including front, back and side corners. Several wall sections and a set of 30 event rooms (15 variants and 15 b variants) can attach to the compound. Event rooms hold a stray or a group of strays and sometimes a chest. Short dirt and stone paths connect the outer walls to the plaza.

Two keep layouts differ in their inhabitants. stray_fort_2 has a zombie villager, a farmer villager, an iron door and a lever, which turns the room behind the door into a small villager enclosure. stray_fort_1 has an armor stand and a patch of powder snow in its interior.

Inhabitants

The fort overrides the monster spawn category across its full bounding box, so only strays spawn inside it. The override uses a group size of 1 to 32 strays. Strays are also placed directly in many event rooms and wall sections when the fort generates.

No boss or spawner is part of the fort. The zombie villager and the farmer in stray_fort_2 are the only non-stray inhabitants. Strays use vanilla bows, so arrows inflict Slowness and can hit from across the plaza.

Loot

The best loot is in the three chest tables. Each keep contains all three.

  • Treasure table: always includes a Smithing Template (100%). The table also includes Arcane Essence (47%), Gold Ingot (46%), Rabbit's Foot (44%), Emerald (41%) and Golden Carrot (41%). The Smithing Template is the most reliable upgrade material in the fort.
  • Archer table: Tipped Arrow and Arrow both appear at 77%, Bow at 35%. Air (empty) appears at 65%, so an archer chest is often empty of this table's items.
  • Generic table: includes Rope (76%) and Tomato and Cabbage Seeds (55% and 49%) from Farmer's Delight, plus Arcane Essence (45%) and Pumpkin Pie (20%).

The mod also defines a Stray Fortress Map, an exploration map that points to the fort, and a separate decorated pot table for the fort's pots. Chest contents are listed in the generated tables below.

Biomes (30): Snowy Plains, Snowy Taiga, Snowy Badlands, Cold Desert, Muskeg, Tundra, Cold Shrubland, Cold Boreal Taiga, Tundra, Frozen Pine Taiga, Snowy Coniferous Forest, Auroral Garden, Wintry Forest, Snowy Fir Clearing, Ice Marsh, Gravel Desert, Glacial Chasm, Dead Forest, Siberian Taiga, Snowblossom Grove, Snowy Maple Woods, Wintry Lowlands, Alpine Grove, Spires, Snowy Shield, Hot Springs, Rocky Shrubland, Icy Heights, Cold Deciduous Forest (Removed), Frozen Tundra (Removed)

Tips

  • Approach the fort through a wall gate. The walls block line of sight, so you can clear strays one at a time instead of meeting them in the open plaza.
  • Strays shoot from range and their arrows inflict Slowness. Keep moving and close the distance quickly, or fight from behind a wall corner so they must come to you.
  • Check the event rooms along the outer walls. These rooms hold strays and a chest, so they are useful targets once the plaza is cleared.
  • Take the Smithing Template from the treasure chest first. It is the only guaranteed item in the fort.
  • Bows and tipped arrows come mostly from the archer table, which is the place to restock ranged gear.
