The Gravel Desert is an overworld biome added by Terralith. Despite its name, it is a cold biome with a temperature of 0.14, and its precipitation is snow, so it is not a hot desert. In Fear Nightfall it is rare, covering about 0.21% of the land surface. Players should know it for two reasons: its wildlife is cold-climate, and its hostile spawn table is dominated by the pack's horror mobs from Born in Chaos.

Description

The biome is cold and pale. Its fog is light grey, its sky is a muted blue-grey, and its water is a deep blue. Snow falls on it, and the top layer of the ground freezes. Gravel is the biome's namesake material: gravel ore features and gravel disks are placed in the stone layers. Random patches of dead coral fans also appear on the ground, which is unusual for a cold biome.

Lakes in the biome may be filled with lava. Surface and underground lava lakes are generated, and lava springs also appear. The water holds a varied set of fish (see the spawn table below). The biome plays its own ambient cave sound.

Plant life is sparse. Surface plants include sugar cane, pumpkin patches, grass patches, flowers, glow lichen, and brown and red mushrooms. The biome has no tree features.

Generation

The Gravel Desert is placed by the pack's custom biome table, which gives each climate cell a share of its land among the biomes allowed there. Its downfall is 0.5, which is moderate, and it is one of the rarest biomes in the pack, covering about 0.21% of the land surface.

The biome is not one of the pack's six-times-weighted horror biomes, which include Dark Forest, Deep Dark and the swamp biomes. Horror content is therefore not concentrated here. Its hostile spawn table is still heavy with horror mobs, because Born in Chaos adds monster spawns to every biome.

Features

  • Gravel: gravel ore features and gravel disks in the stone layers.
  • Ores: the standard overworld ore set (coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, diamond, lapis and others), placed at the usual Y-levels. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds a Mithril ore placement, and Born in Chaos adds Infected Diamond Ore features.
  • Lava lakes: surface and underground lava lakes, plus lava springs.
  • Water life: a long list of fish and water creatures spawns in the biome's water. Most are ambient fish such as Bluegill, Perch, Minnow, Brown Trout and Carp. Several are cave or deep-water species such as Cave Eel, Deep Grouper and Glowfish.
  • Plants: coral fans, glow lichen, flowers, grass patches, brown and red mushrooms, sugar cane and pumpkin patches.
  • Freezing: the top layer of the ground freezes.

Mobs and structures

The spawn table below is generated from game data. Its hostile section is the most important part for a player. The Gravel Desert mixes vanilla hostiles such as spiders, creepers, slimes, zombies and strays with a large pool of Born in Chaos monsters. Born in Chaos adds its monster spawns to every biome, and several of them have notable weight here, including Dread Hound and Nightmare Stalker. Krampus and Lifestealer are among the rarest entries. Wildlife is limited to rabbits, wolves, polar bears and shima enagas.

The structures list below includes many structures from Born in Chaos, the Graveyard mod, Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks and Nova Structures. Horror structures that can generate here include the Dark Tower and the Ice Spider Den (see Ice Spider Den).

Tips

  • Expect hostile mobs at night in the open. Spawn weights for spiders, creepers, slimes, zombies and strays are high, and the Born in Chaos monsters share the same pool.
  • Snow falls in this biome, so build shelter before night and keep it closed in.
  • Lava lakes can appear on the surface. Mark the edges before travelling at night.
  • The biome is rare. The pack's Nature's Compass recipe uses diamonds instead of saplings, and it can be used to find the biome.
