Rocky Mountains is a cold, stony mountain biome added by Terralith. It is one of the uncommon biomes in Fear Nightfall, covering about 0.29% of the pack's land surface. Its spawn table mixes ordinary mountain monsters with a large share of the pack's horror mobs from Born in Chaos, Graveyard and Iron's Spells 'n' Spellbooks, so it is a place where horror encounters are common at night. The biome also contains many structures, several of them horror structures.

Description

The ground is mostly bare stone. Terralith's mountain features set cobbled deepslate and tuff across the surface, with ore veins and small amounts of stone variants exposed in the rock. Snow covers large parts of the surface. Snow block patches appear across the ground, with occasional powder snow in them, and thin snow layers are scattered over the stone.

The biome has grey-blue colouring. The sky colour is #a5b0bd and the fog colour is #d7d8e1. Water is #3f76e4. Its background music is the Stony Peaks track, and its ambient sounds are the standard cave sounds.

Generation

Rocky Mountains uses a temperature of 0.3 and a downfall of 0.3, which places it in the cold, dry part of the climate space. The biome has no precipitation, so rain and snowfall never occur here. Snow appears only as ground and surface blocks.

The biome makes up 0.29% of the pack's land surface. It has 185 structures that can generate in it, and it has no cave share at y=-30 (0.00%), so the biome's underground is mostly solid stone with the ores and features listed below.

Rocky Mountains is not one of the biomes weighted 6× in the pack's horror weighting. It is one of the peak and mountain biomes, which the pack leaves mostly at normal weight.

Features

The biome's underground and surface features come from Terralith and Vanilla:

  • Ores: Vanilla coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond (including buried and large diamond veins) and emerald ores, plus the granite, diorite, andesite and tuff stone variants.
  • Infested stone: Silverfish-infested stone is placed in the biome.
  • Caves and lakes: Underground and surface lava lakes, amethyst geodes, and spring water and spring lava sources.
  • Dungeons: Standard and deep monster rooms.
  • Decoration: Glow lichen and the sand, clay and gravel disks found in most biomes.

The pack adds its own features to the biome. Born in Chaos places black argillite and infected diamond ore in the stone. Butchery places sulfur ore, and Iron's Spells 'n' Spellbooks places mithril ore. Supplementaries adds cave urns and wild flax, Farmer's Delight places wild potato patches, and Stony Cliffs Are Cool places its cliff feature.

Mobs and structures

The biome's monster spawn table is dominated by the vanilla spider, skeleton, creeper, slime and zombie mobs, each with a weight of 95 or 100. It also includes many horror mobs, including the Revenant, Slime Golem, Necromancer, Nightmare, Dread Hound and Dark Vortex. Several of the rarer horror mobs, such as the Dire Hound Leader and Lifestealer, have very low weights. The full list is in the table below.

Water and cave spawns are also present. The water ambient fish and water creatures include Bluegill, Perch, Minnow, Brown Trout, Carp, Cave Eel and Corpse Fish, and bats spawn as ambient creatures.

Structures in the biome include the Catacombs and Impaled Icebreaker from Iron's Spells 'n' Spellbooks, the Firewell and Grave Memesus from Born in Chaos, and the dead trees from Graveyard. The pack places horror structures about 30% closer together than normal, which includes most of these. The full structure and loot tables are below.

Tips

  • Rocky Mountains is cold and open, so the Nightmare and Dread Hound spawns are the main threats after dark. Arrive with a light source and a shield.
  • Powder snow sinks the player and freezes them quickly. Walk around the snow block patches on the surface, or wear leather boots, which let the player walk on powder snow safely.
  • Because the biome has no cave share at y=-30, underground trips are through the mountain stone itself. Ores here include diamond and emerald, so a mining trip is worthwhile, but expect monster rooms and silverfish along the way.
  • The biome has no rain or snow falling, so the sky stays clear. Storms are not a cue to leave.
