The Amethyst Canyon is a hot, humid jungle biome added by Terralith. It is one of the two amethyst biomes that Terralith adds to the overworld, alongside the Amethyst Rainforest. In Fear Nightfall it covers about 0.02% of the land, so it is rare. It has calcite cliffs, amethyst geodes and a long list of hostile mobs, many of them from the horror mods, so a player should expect a dangerous night here.

Description

The canyon floor has jungle ground and jungle-style trees. The walls are calcite cliffs, which are pale and stand out against the green canopy.

The biome colours are set by the Terralith biome effects: grass is #70d484, foliage is #c8a7ff (lavender), water is #43d5ee (turquoise), fog is #c0d8ff and sky is #cec6ff. The ambient cave sound and the overworld jungle music are used for the mood.

Trees are a mix of jungle styles, including azalea variants, flowering azalea trees, two-by-two trees, big trees and bending acacia-style trees. Trunk vines are added to some of them. Small bushes, sugar cane, melon patches, pumpkin patches, bamboo, mushrooms and glow lichen fill the open ground.

Generation

Amethyst Canyon has a temperature of 0.95 and a downfall of 0.9, and it has rain. The pack's custom biome source places it in hot, humid climate cells, where it shares space with other eligible biomes by weight. Because the biome is tagged as a jungle, it is grouped with other jungle biomes, so it borders them rather than forests or deserts.

Its share is 0.02% of the land surface. Horror biomes in Fear Nightfall are weighted toward temperate-to-cool humid forests, taigas and swamps, so this biome is not a horror biome. Its spawn lists still include many horror mobs (see below).

Features

The biome has several terrain features that the other overworld biomes do not:

  • Calcite cliffs. Terralith's upper and lower calcite cliff features shape the canyon walls.
  • Amethyst geodes. A vanilla amethyst geode can generate here, along with the blue amethyst flower placement added by Terralith.
  • Lava. Underground and surface lava lakes, and spring water and spring lava, appear in the terrain.
  • Monster rooms. Both the regular and the deep vanilla monster rooms can generate here.
  • Ores. The biome has the vanilla ore set, including copper, coal, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, and diamond in its medium, large and buried forms. The pack also adds features from its mods: Iron's Spells 'n' Spellbooks places mithril ore, Born in Chaos places infected deepslate diamond ore and black argillite, and Butchery places deepslate sulfur ore and salt and sulfur features.
  • Water life. Water creatures include Piranha, Cave Crawler, Cave Eel, Deep Grouper, Shadow Snapper, Tambaqui, Angler Fish and several other fish types.

Mobs and structures

The monster spawn list starts with vanilla mobs: Spider, Skeleton, Creeper and Slime at weight 100 each, and Zombie at weight 95. Many horror mobs follow at lower weights. Examples include the Ghoul, the Necromancer, the Dread Hound, the Bloody Gadfly, Krampus and the Dire Hound Leader, and several mutant variants from Mutant Monsters. The rarest entries, at weight 1, are Krampus and the Supreme Bonescaller.

The creature list is mostly farm animals, with parrots at weight 40, and includes pandas, ocelots, wolves and Red Panda. The ambient list includes bats, Leaf Insect and Jumping Spider.

The biome has 163 structure types that can generate in it. Horror structures found here include the Iron's Spells catacombs, Graveyard dead trees, the Born in Chaos firewell and the Moog's Voyager dead jungle trees. Jungle temples and other vanilla-style jungle structures also appear.

Tips

  • Calcite walls and the canyon floor are easy to get lost in, so mark your position with a torch before you leave the canyon.
  • Lava lakes and lava springs are on the surface and underground, so keep a fire-resistance potion or water bucket ready before you dig.
  • The mob list is dense after dark. Carry a bow or a strong melee weapon, and light your camp to stop monsters spawning close to it.
  • The amethyst geodes and the many ores make this a good stop for mining, but the monster rooms and horror structures are a higher risk than most jungle biomes.
