The Birch Taiga is a temperate taiga biome added by Terralith. It is a rare overworld biome in Fear Nightfall, covering about 0.23% of land, and it is built around birch trees with oaks and smaller birches mixed in. Players mostly come to it for its hostile population. Its monster table combines vanilla mobs with additions from Graveyard, Born in Chaos and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, including Ghouls, Necromancers and Dread Hounds.

Description

The biome uses the taiga climate with a temperature of 0.22 and a downfall of 0.2, and it receives rain rather than snow. Birch trees are the defining plant, and the tree selection adds oaks, small birches, cloud trees and two Yellowstone-style birch variants alongside the classic birch. Surface boulders and small ponds are placed by Terralith's own features.

The biome's colours are set by Terralith. Grass is tinted #8dc876 and foliage #f3b437, a warm gold that stands out against the pale trunks. Water is #3f76e4. The fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff) and the sky is #7da2ff. The biome plays the overworld forest music track, and its mood sound is an ambient cave sound with a 6,000-tick delay between plays.

Generation

The biome occupies 0.23% of the land surface and 0.05% of the cave layer at y = -30. These are the in-game measurements from the live server. Terralith's biomes together cover about 31% of Fear Nightfall's land, so Birch Taiga is only a small part of that share.

Fear Nightfall does not weight Birch Taiga for horror. The biomes given 6× weight in the pack are Dark Forest, Ominous Woods, Spider Nest, Blackwood Taiga, Ashen Woodland, Sleepy Hollows, Willow Swamp, dead forests, Ashen Savanna, bayous, the infested and frostfire caves, and the Deep Dark. The pack does concentrate horror in temperate-to-cool, humid forests, taigas and swamps, so Birch Taiga's horror content comes from its mob and structure tables rather than from extra biome weight.

The pack's biome table places biomes of the same type next to each other, so Birch Taiga sits beside other forest and taiga biomes.

Features

  • Trees: the tree placement attempts eight trees per chunk. Each tree is picked from a random selector. The classic birch is the default, and the selector can pick an oak, a small birch, a cloud tree or one of two Yellowstone-style birches.
  • Boulders and ponds: Terralith's birch boulder and pond features are placed on the surface.
  • Lava: lava lakes generate both underground and on the surface. Keep this in mind when you dig or travel at night.
  • Monster rooms: the biome includes vanilla monster rooms and deep monster rooms, which are small dungeons with spawners.
  • Amethyst geodes: vanilla amethyst geodes can generate underground.
  • Ores: the biome uses the standard vanilla ore set for coal, copper, iron, gold, lapis, redstone and diamond, with several diamond placements at different depths. Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and black argillite, Butchery adds sulfur ore, and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds mithril ore.
  • Plants and decoration: the biome has berry bushes, pumpkin patches, sugar cane, wild flax and cave urns from Supplementaries, silk cocoons from Critters and Companions, and wild potatoes from Farmer's Delight.

Mobs and structures

Birch Taiga has a broad hostile table. The vanilla monsters Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime and Zombie have the highest weights, but the biome's notable additions are the Ghoul (weight 25), the Necromancer (weight 18), the Dread Hound (weight 7) and the Dark Vortex (weight 7). Rarer spawns include the Spirit of Chaos (weight 4) and the Krampus (weight 1). Passive and ambient spawns include Crows, Honey Golems, wolves and ferrets, along with cave and forest critters.

The biome has 246 structures. Horror-themed ones include the Dark Tower (from Born in Chaos), Baba Yaga's Hut (from Hexerei) and the Catacombs from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Many other structures from other mods also generate here, including several Terralith and Mutant Village Structures builds.

Tips

  • Hostile mobs spawn in darkness. Light your paths and camps with torches. Among the non-vanilla hostiles, the Ghoul shares the highest spawn weight (25) with the Slime Golem.
  • The Dread Hound and Spirit of Chaos are low-weight spawns, so they are uncommon, but they are dangerous when they appear. Fight them with full health and a clear escape route.
  • Lava lakes can appear on the surface and underground. Check the ground before you run across open terrain at night.
  • Birch trees are common here, so wood supply is easy to find. Birch logs and planks are good for early building.
  • Monster rooms are underground. They contain spawners, so approach them carefully and be ready for a fight.
