The Temperate Highlands is a rainy overworld biome added by Terralith. It is one of the five biomes in Terralith's highlands family, alongside Highlands, Forested Highlands, Alpine Highlands and Arid Highlands. In Fear Nightfall it is a forest-type biome with a large hostile population drawn from the pack's horror mods, so a player meets both ordinary forest animals and several of the pack's dangerous monsters here.

The biome has a temperature of 0.5 and a downfall of 0.2, and it rains rather than snows. Its terrain is rolling highland with stone pillars and gravel patches, and its trees include oak, birch and dark oak along with several Terralith tree shapes.

Description

The biome uses Terralith's highland terrain. Stone pillars rise from the surface, disc-shaped patches of gravel lie on the slopes, and grassy stone cliffs from Terralith's canyon generation cut into the hills. Underground the terrain is ordinary stone, with the usual vanilla cave carvers and canyons.

The trees are dense and varied. Terralith adds several tree groups to the biome, including orange-leaved trees, dark oak trees, cloud-shaped trees, and oak and birch piles. Glow lichen and vines grow on the trees and rock faces, and mushrooms and sugar cane grow on the ground. Flower patches, tall flowers and grass cover the open ground.

The colours are warm and cool at once. The grass is olive green (#a4bb58), the foliage is orange-red (#ec6e37), and the water is blue (#3f76e4). The fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff) and the sky is a clear blue (#78a7ff). The biome plays the vanilla cave mood sound every 6000 ticks (five minutes) when the player is nearby.

Generation

Temperate Highlands is a temperate, rainy biome in Terralith's climate range. It is one of the forest-type biomes in the pack, and it covers about 0.55% of the surface land in Fear Nightfall. The pack's custom biome table gives each climate cell a share of every biome whose original mod allows it there, and same-type biomes sit next to each other. Temperate Highlands therefore usually borders other forests and highlands rather than deserts or jungles.

The biome is tagged as a forest, an overworld biome and a temperate biome, so mods that place structures or spawns in forests also treat it as one. Strongholds are biased toward biomes with this tag, so the biome is one of the places where a stronghold is more likely to be found.

It is not one of the biomes that Fear Nightfall weights at six times the normal rate (see the list of six-times biomes in the pack's spookier-world change). Its horror content therefore comes from the mobs and structures it hosts rather than from being picked more often than other biomes.

Features

Temperate Highlands places the full set of vanilla ores in the stone layer, including coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis lazuli and diamond, with buried and large diamond veins. It also places vanilla andesite, diorite, granite and tuff patches, and gravel ore patches.

Fear Nightfall mods add their own ores and features here:

  • Born in Chaos adds Black Argillite and Infected Diamond Ore, including an infected deepslate variant of the diamond ore.
  • Butchery adds Sulfur ore in deepslate, along with salt and sulfur generation features.
  • Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds Mithril ore.
  • Critters and Companions adds silk cocoons, both on the ground and hanging from trees.
  • Supplementaries adds wild flax and cave urns.
  • Farmer's Delight adds patches of wild carrots and wild onions.
  • Stony Cliffs Are Cool adds its cliff feature to the stone slopes.

Terralith's terrain and plant features unique to the biome include:

  • Stone pillars: columns of stone on the surface.
  • Gravel discs: flat patches of gravel that replace the surface blocks.
  • Canyon cliffs: grassy stone cliff faces, both upper and lower, plus slab stone.
  • Springs and lava lakes: spring water, plus surface and underground lava lakes from the vanilla lake features.
  • Vines and lichen: vines spread on tree trunks and rock faces, and glow lichen grows on the surface.
  • Mushroom and plant patches: brown and red mushrooms, sugar cane and pumpkin patches.

The biome also has the vanilla amethyst geode and the standard and deep monster rooms, which are underground dungeons that can hold hostile mobs and loot.

Mobs and structures

The hostile mob table is long and is dominated by the vanilla spider, skeleton, creeper and slime, each with a spawn weight of 100. Zombies come next at 95. Fear Nightfall monsters follow with lower weights. The Slime Golem has weight 25, the Necromancer 18, and the Dread Hound 7. Rarer horror monsters in the same table include the Krampus, Lifestealer and Nightmare Stalker, each with a low weight. Because the table is long, a player who walks through the biome at night is likely to meet several different hostile types.

Passive animals are crows, sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses, wolves, ferrets and donkeys. The crows are the most common, with a weight of 20. Water creatures are fish, glow squid and a few Fear Nightfall fish. Ambient creatures include bats, leaf insects, ladybugs, roly-polys and snails.

Structures are numerous, with 211 that can generate here. Many come from the pack's horror mods. Born in Chaos adds a dark tower and a firewell, and Graveyards adds haunted houses and dead trees. Terralith's fortified villages are part of the pack's shared village set. The rest come from vanilla, Formations and other structure mods, and include campsites, barns, castles, a cathedral, bunkers and many small ruins. The structure table below gives the placement and chest loot for each.

Tips

  • Carry a light source and a weapon when moving through the biome at night. The monster table is long, and the horror monsters are mixed in with ordinary hostiles.
  • The biome has many structures close together. Check a structure's entrance before going in, especially the haunted houses and towers, which hold dangerous mobs.
  • Lava lakes appear on the surface and underground. Look at the ground before crossing a hillside after dark.
  • Springs and rivers make the biome a good place to find water for farming and brewing. Gravel and stone pillars make flat building ground harder to find.
  • The dense trees are a good source of wood, but clearing a large area takes time.
