The Shield is a cool, humid overworld biome added by Terralith. It is a dense conifer and taiga forest with a foggy grey-blue palette. More than half of its monster weight belongs to the vanilla monsters, and the rest is filled with horror mobs from the pack's mods, so it is a place where a player should expect trouble after dark.
The Shield has a grey-blue water colour (#617b90), a pale fog (#d7d8e1) and a grey sky (#a5b0bd). Its grass is a muted green-grey (#70a57b), and its foliage tint is an amber (#f3b437). The biome is tagged for dense vegetation, coniferous trees and old growth, and its forest is thick.
The trees come from three placed features. The most common is a tall spruce-type tree planted on coarse dirt, with a broad, mega-pine crown. The second is a birch tree. The third is a dark-oak-named tree with a pine-style crown. Ferns, large ferns, grass patches, flowers, brown and red mushrooms, sugar cane, pumpkin patches and common berry bushes cover the forest floor.
Shield Clearing
Shield Clearing (terralith:shield_clearing) is a drier, more open variant that shares the Shield's palette. Its downfall value is -0.5, so it has less rain than the forest. It takes 0.02% of land. It has no grass or foliage colour override and none of the Shield's tree features.
Snowy Shield
Snowy Shield (terralith:snowy_shield) is the cold variant. Its temperature is 0.1, so precipitation falls as snow instead of rain. It keeps the Shield's trees and mobs and adds Shima Enaga to the creature table. It takes 0.04% of land.
Generation
The Shield sits in the cool, humid part of the climate space, with temperature 0.4 and downfall 0.8. It carries the vanilla stronghold_biased_to tag, so strongholds favour it. Its cave share at y=-30 is 0.00%, so the biome has almost no caves at that height.
In Fear Nightfall it takes 0.66% of the land surface. That is a small share, but Terralith as a whole takes 31% of land in the pack's biome table, so the Shield appears regularly between the larger Terralith biomes. The pack does not give the Shield an individual weight boost, and it is not one of the biomes weighted at 6× in the spookier world changes. Its cool, humid, taiga-type climate is the kind of area where the pack concentrates horror structures.
The biome can hold up to 192 structures. Among them are the Born in Chaos clown caravan and dark tower, Graveyard dead trees, Nova illager hideouts, the Iron's Spells catacombs, and many village and house types from the pack's structure mods. The generated table below lists the full set.
Features
Ores. The Shield uses the vanilla ore set from coal to diamond, including buried diamond and lapis. It also includes the infected diamond ore and black argillite from Born in Chaos, sulfur ore from Butchery, and Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.
Trees. The spruce-type tree is the most common. It is placed four or five times per chunk, with four in 90% of rolls. The birch and dark-oak-named trees are placed in smaller numbers, two or three and one or two per chunk.
Plants. Large ferns, grass patches, flowers and glow lichen fill the open ground. Sugar cane and pumpkin patches also generate here, along with common berry bushes.
Water and lava. Spring features of water and lava are placed in the biome.
Supplementaries. Cave urns and wild flax from the Supplementaries mod generate here.
Mobs and structures
The monster table of the Shield has 57 entries and a total weight of 888. The five vanilla monsters Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, Slime and Zombie make up 495 of that weight, and each has weight 100 or 95. Enderman and Witch are also present. The remaining entries are mostly horror mobs. Born in Chaos contributes Dread Hounds, Dark Vortexes, Zombie Clowns and Skeleton Thrashers, Graveyard contributes Revenants, Ghouls and Skeleton Creepers, and Iron's Spells contributes the Necromancer. The rarest mobs have weight 1 or 2.
The creature table is the vanilla animal set of sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, wolves, foxes and rabbits. Bats are the ambient mob. The water tables hold Glow Squid, Corpse Fish, Glutton Fish and a range of other fish. The generated tables below list every entry and its weight.
Carry a light source and a sword or ranged weapon into the Shield after dark. The monster table is heavy with zombies and skeletons, and the rarer horror mobs can appear alongside them.
The Shield has almost no caves, so most mining happens on the surface. The infected diamond ore from Born in Chaos is found in this biome.
The spruce-type trees are tall and wide. Clear space before you build a base.
Check the structure table before you explore, since the biome holds many horror structures.
Shield Clearing has a monster table close to the Shield's, so the same caution applies there.
