The Snowy Badlands is a cold overworld biome added by Terralith. It keeps the banded terracotta ground of the vanilla badlands and covers much of it with snow. It makes up about 0.4% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall, so it is uncommon, and it is one of the cold biomes where the pack's horror mobs and structures appear.

A player cares about the biome for three reasons: its mob spawn table is heavy with undead, skeletons, spiders and Born in Chaos monsters after dark, its structure pool includes several horror sites, and its stone holds the Mithril ore and the Born in Chaos infected diamond ores.

Description

The ground is mainly terracotta. The biome places blobs of terracotta with a radius of 7 to 12 blocks, which swap orange and yellow terracotta for other colours, so the surface shows patches of differently coloured clay. Snow blocks are placed on exposed terracotta and red sand surfaces, and vanilla freeze-top-layer snow sits on top of the ground. Terralith's own snowy layer features add further snow cover.

The biome's own feature list adds no trees. The plant life is sparse and mostly comes from badlands patches: grass patches, dead bushes, sugar cane, cactus and pumpkin patches, along with brown and red mushrooms and glow lichen. Supplementaries' wild flax and Farmer's Delight's wild tomato patches also grow here.

Water is deep blue. The biome's water colour is #3938C9, the fog colour is pale grey (#D7D8E1) and the sky colour is grey-blue (#A5B0BD). Precipitation is snow. The background music is the vanilla badlands track, and the ambient cave sound plays at intervals.

Generation

Terralith gives the biome a temperature of 0 and a downfall of 0.5, so it is a cold biome that receives snow rather than rain. Snow golems melt in this biome, because it carries the vanilla snow_golem_melts tag. The vanilla stronghold_biased_to tag also points strongholds toward this biome.

Its share of land is about 0.4%. In Fear Nightfall the biome is not among the biomes weighted 6 times as often as the rest. Horror structures are the exception: the pack places horror structure sets about 30% closer together, and horror sets that include this biome, such as the Born in Chaos grave sites, appear here more often than their base spacing would give.

Features

The biome's feature list places these items:

  • Terracotta blobs and the snow layers described above.
  • Lakes and springs. Lava lakes appear both underground and on the surface, and spring water and spring lava also appear.
  • Geodes and dungeons. Amethyst geodes, plus the vanilla monster room and deep monster room, can generate.
  • Vanilla ores. Coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond, granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, dirt and gravel veins are all placed, including the medium, large and buried diamond variants.
  • Pack ores. Born in Chaos adds Black Argillite, Infected Diamond Ore and Infected Deepslate Diamond Ore. Butchery adds Sulfur ore to underground layers. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds a Mithril ore placement.
  • Cave decoration. Supplementaries adds urns in caves.

Mobs and structures

The spawn tables are generated below. The monster table is the largest. It is led by spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies, and it includes many Born in Chaos types, such as Revenant, Necromancer, Dread Hound, Nightmare, Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin and Krampus. Bats and wolves are the ambient and creature spawns. Terracotta Golem appears as a creature. Water spawns include Corpse Fish and Glowfish, and glow squid spawn in underground water.

The biome holds 194 structures. Notable ones include Born in Chaos grave sites, the Dark Tower on plains, the Infernal Pumpkin, the Firewell, the Graveyard altar, the Iron's Spells catacombs and ice spider den, and the Impaled Icebreaker. Vanilla igloos, Formations ice spires and copper spires, and the snowy igloo variant of CTOV villages also generate here, along with illager camps and hideouts from Nova Structures.

Tips

  • Snow golems melt in this biome, so do not rely on them for defence here.
  • Mithril and the infected diamond ores are generated in this biome's stone, so mining here is a way to collect them.
  • The monster table is wide and includes the pack's strongest horror mobs, so the biome is most dangerous after dark.
