Painted Mountains is a mountain biome added by the Terralith mod. Its slopes are banded in coloured terracotta, and its sky and fog are a pale dusty beige. Its monster spawn table is long and includes many mobs from Born in Chaos, so it is one of the places in Fear Nightfall where a player meets the pack's horror mobs in open terrain.

The biome has a hot, dry climate with rain. Its structures and monster list make it a place where loot and fights are both common, and it is most dangerous at night.

Description

The ground is mostly stone, with a layer of coloured terracotta laid over the surface. A surface patch feature places terracotta in layers 10 to 12 blocks deep, in red, white, light blue, blue, yellow, cyan, purple and magenta. The bands give the mountains their painted look.

Plant cover is sparse, made up mostly of dead bushes and glow lichen. Water tints to #3F76E4, fog to #E2D7C3 and the sky to #E2D3B3, which together give the biome a washed-out appearance in daylight.

Water and lava springs appear through the terrain. Lava lakes form both underground and at the surface. A cave ambient sound plays about every five minutes (6000 ticks).

Generation

Painted Mountains has a temperature of 1 and a downfall of 0.3, with rain as its precipitation. In the pack's live sampling it measured 0.00% of surface land and 0.00% of the cave layer at y=-30, so it is rare compared with the pack's common biomes. The infobox gives the share used by the generator.

The biome is not one of the horror biomes that Fear Nightfall weights 6×. Its horror character comes from its spawn table and its structures, not from extra weight in the biome table.

Caves and canyons carve through the biome.

Features

The biome adds several features beyond the default mountain set:

  • Surface terracotta. The banded terracotta described above.
  • Ore veins. The standard vanilla ores for stone, coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis, emerald and diamond, plus the Born in Chaos diamond and black argillite variants, Iron's Spells mithril ore and Butchery sulfur ore. Infested stone also appears.
  • Stony Cliffs. The cliff feature from Stony Cliffs Are Cool appears here as well.
  • Lava lakes and springs. Lava lakes generate underground and on the surface. Lava springs can appear in the stone.
  • Geodes and monster rooms. Amethyst geodes and monster rooms (dungeons with spawners) can generate in the stone.
  • Plants. Dead bushes, glow lichen and wild tomatoes from Farmer's Delight, plus wild flax and cave urns from Supplementaries.

The creature spawn table is light. Goats, wolves, armadillos and terracotta golems are the main land animals. Bats are the ambient mob, and glow squid spawn in underground water.

The monster table is the heavy part of the biome. Spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes share the top weight of 100, and zombies have 95. Below them are many mobs from Born in Chaos, including the Necromancer (weight 18), the Dread Hound (weight 7) and the Nightmare (weight 7). Witches and endermen also spawn. Glow squid and fish spawn in water.

The biome shares its structure pool with several Fear Nightfall structure sets. It can generate Illager Hideout and Manor, Pillager Outposts, mountain villages from CT Overhaul Village, and the Firewell from Born in Chaos. The pack's changes to the village and outpost sets apply here as well, so Luki's Grand Capitals builds can appear next to vanilla structures.

Tips

  • Treat the biome as dangerous at night. The monster table has a lot of high-weight mobs and many of them come from Born in Chaos.
  • Watch your footing around lava lakes and springs, which can sit close to the surface.
  • Carry light and food for long trips. The biome's structures are spread out, so a search for one can take a while.
  • Light the area around a camp. Most monsters in the table spawn in low light, so torches around a base keep the spawn area clear.
