The Basalt Cliffs is a surface biome added by Terralith. It is a lukewarm, rainy biome whose terrain is made of dark basalt rock rising out of the ground, with pillars of basalt standing above the surrounding stone. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the rarest biomes in the pack and is populated by a dense mix of vanilla and pack-added hostile mobs, so it is a place to approach with care.

Description

The biome is built around basalt. Tall basalt columns are placed on the surface at fixed heights, and large blobs of stone inside the mountains are converted to basalt, so the cliff faces look dark and banded rather than grey. Smooth basalt patches form inside the basalt.

The biome has a downfall of 0.3 and rain falls in it. Its fog is a pale blue-white (#c0d8ff), its sky is a clear blue (#7da2ff) and its water is a deep blue (#3f76e4), with a darker water fog. The ambient cave sound plays about every five minutes (6000 ticks) as a mood sound.

Generation

Basalt Cliffs is a Terralith biome with a temperature of 0.5, which places it in Terralith's lukewarm band. It has the #minecraft:stronghold_biased_to tag, so vanilla stronghold placement favours it. The biome sits within the pack's custom biome table, where every biome allowed in a climate cell shares that cell by weight.

In Fear Nightfall the biome covers only about 0.01% of the surface land, so it is extremely rare. Its underground share at y=-30 is 0.00%, which means the biome almost never appears in the cave layer. It is not one of the biomes that the pack weights 6× for horror. It is not a horror biome, although horror structures can still appear in it (see below).

Features

The biome's terrain features come from the Terralith cliffs set:

  • Basalt columns stand on the surface at y=75. They spawn on top of basalt, smooth basalt, sand or gravel that sits below air or water.
  • Upper basalt columns appear at y=180 on any solid surface below open air or water.
  • Basaltification converts stone to basalt in large blobs (about 55 blocks) between y=62 and y=164. Only stone with open air within five blocks is converted, so the change is visible on cave walls and cliff faces.
  • Basalt cracks replace basalt with smooth basalt in patches of about 26 blocks between y=64 and y=164. Each block has a 78% chance of being replaced. Deepslate variants of the cracks and seeds appear underground.

The biome also has the usual ores of the pack, including coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond, as well as the pack's wild crops (carrots, onions and tomatoes from Farmer's Delight), wild flax from Supplementaries, and sugar cane and pumpkin patches.

Mobs and structures

The monster list is large. The vanilla hostiles (spiders, zombies, skeletons, creepers, slimes, endermen, witches and zombie villagers) are joined by many mobs from pack mods, including Slime Golem, Skeleton Creeper, Necromancer, Dread Hound and Decaying Zombie. Bats appear as ambient mobs, and glow squids swim in underground water. The full spawn tables are generated below.

The biome can generate 160 structures. Among them are the Catacombs from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, which the pack places closer together as a horror structure, and several structures from Born in Chaos. The full list is in the table below.

Tips

  • Go in during the day. Night brings a large number of hostile mobs, many of which come in groups.
  • Carry a light source and a sword. Hostile mobs spawn in large numbers at night, so keep light around your base and sleep before dark.
  • Expect glow squids in underground water. The biome's cave share is essentially zero, so most underground passages are the stone blobs that basaltification creates rather than true caves.
