Moog's Lanterns is a family of eleven small surface structures added by Moog's Voyager Structures. Each one is a short post-and-lantern arrangement built from a wood type's fence, slab and trapdoor, with a lantern hung from it. There are ten small variants, one for each of several wood types plus a campfire version, and one medium oak variant. The structures contain no chests and no mobs, so they are mainly landmarks: the lanterns mark a spot that is otherwise easy to miss on the surface.

Generation

The lanterns generate in the Overworld during the surface structure step, one structure set per variant. Each set is placed with the mod's advanced random spread placement and anchored to the surface. The small variants use a spacing of 114 chunks with a separation of 56 chunks. The medium oak variant uses 132 chunks and 114 chunks. These are the in-game values after the pack's spread factor of 2.88 is applied, so the lanterns are much sparser than in the mod's default configuration.

Each variant has its own set of biomes:

  • Small oak (mvs:small_oak_lantern) uses the Overworld biome tag and can generate in about 279 biomes, including oceans, rivers and deserts. It is the most widespread variant. In a 26 km² sample of the pack's world, one was observed.
  • Medium oak (mvs:medium_oak_lantern) uses the plains tag and can generate in 27 open biomes, including Plains, Shrubland, Highlands, Tundra and Sunflower Plains. It is the largest variant, with a typical size of 26×30×26 blocks. Two were observed in the same sample, making it the most common lantern in the pack's test area.
  • Small spruce (mvs:small_spruce_lantern) uses the taiga tag and can generate in 32 cold forest and taiga biomes. One was observed in the sample.
  • Small acacia (mvs:small_acacia_lantern) uses the savanna tag and can generate in 13 savanna and dry biomes. One was observed.
  • Small campfire (mvs:small_campfire_lantern) uses the plains tag, the same biome list as the medium oak variant. None were observed in the sample.
  • Small birch (mvs:small_birch_lantern) generates in four birch forest and birch taiga biomes. None were observed.
  • Small cherry (mvs:small_cherry_lantern) generates in Cherry Grove and Magnolia Woodland. None were observed.
  • Small dark oak (mvs:small_dark_oak_lantern) uses the dark forest tag and can generate in 10 biomes, including Dark Forest and Sakura Grove. None were observed.
  • Small jungle (mvs:small_jungle_lantern) and small bamboo (mvs:small_bamboo_lantern) share the jungle tag and can generate in 15 jungle and rainforest biomes. None were observed.
  • Small mangrove (mvs:small_mangrove_lantern) generates in Mangrove Swamp, Bayou and Floodplain. None were observed.

Because the variants are spread out and each covers a different biome family, a player is more likely to find a lantern by exploring a wide variety of biomes than by staying in one place. Many variants are rare in the pack's test area, so searching a single biome for a particular lantern may take a long time.

Layout

Each lantern is a single template piece with a jigsaw depth of 1, so there are no rooms, floors or branching paths. The templates use the wood type of their variant for the fence posts, slabs and trapdoors, with a lantern as the main light. The medium oak and small campfire variants add a campfire. Some variants also include a cobblestone, stone brick or andesite wall. The lanterns are not waterlogged and cannot spawn in liquid. They use the beard-thin terrain adaptation, so the surrounding ground is smoothed to fit the structure.

Lanterns emit light at level 15, brighter than a torch (level 14), so the structure stands out in the dark. The campfire variants also emit light.

Inhabitants

Lanterns place no mobs and contain no spawners. Hostile and passive mobs spawn around them in the normal way for their biome.

Loot

The lantern templates contain no chests, barrels or other containers, so no loot is generated. Fear Nightfall did not add any chest loot to these structures.

Tips

  • Lanterns are small and spread out, so explore by biome rather than by coordinates. The small oak variant is the most widespread, and the medium oak variant is the most common in plains-type biomes.
  • The lanterns stand out in the dark because their light is bright, so they are easy to spot from a distance at night.
  • Since there is no loot, a lantern is useful as a waypoint only. Use it to mark the edge of a biome or a route between larger structures.
