The Blackwood Taiga is a cold, wet forest biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is named for the Blackwood wood set, whose tall trees give the biome its character. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the most dangerous overworld biomes: the pack weights it at six times the default, so it is one of the more common places to meet the pack's horror mobs and structures, especially after dark.

Blackwood Taiga replaces part of the vanilla Dark Forest biome. It is a taiga in its tags and climate, so it is cooler and wetter than a typical forest, with a dense canopy of tall trees.

Description

The grass has a dark green colour (#3e6727) and the foliage a darker olive (#42552b), so the whole biome looks muted under a grey-green sky. The fog and sky share the same pale green-grey tone (#aec99f). Water is a deep blue (#2f6da2).

The biome is covered in trees. The main tree is the Blackwood, a tall straight trunk with leaf blobs and branches along its upper half. Shorter Blackwood trees and shrubs fill the gaps between them, and tall dark oak trees and bioshroom mushrooms grow in parts of the biome. Ferns, mushrooms and pumpkin patches grow on the ground, and patches of wild Flax are placed through the biome.

Generation

Blackwood Taiga has a temperature of 0.825 and a downfall of 0.765, which makes it rainy. It is placed by replacing part of the vanilla Dark Forest biome, at the default weight of 50.

In Fear Nightfall the biome covers about 0.94% of the land surface and about 0.06% of the cave layer at y = -30. Its horror weighting is 6×, the same tier as Ashen Woodland, Ominous Woods and Spider Nest. The biome carries the stronghold-biased tag, so the game prefers it when placing Stronghold structures. About 171 structures can generate in the biome, which makes it one of the more structure-dense horror biomes in the pack. These include Haunted House and Giant Mushroom Grave and Memorial Trees.

Features

Trees

The biome uses three tree groups, which the generator picks from when it places trees.

  • Primary trees: the largest Blackwood trees. Their trunks are about 19 to 23 blocks tall, with a root base, leaf blobs on short, medium and long branches, and a crown at the top.
  • Secondary trees: smaller Blackwood trees with a straight trunk of about 12 blocks plus random extra height. These trees are placed alongside the primary trees.
  • Tertiary trees: a mix of tall dark oak trees, and blue and pink bioshroom mushrooms, which grow on the forest floor.

Shrubs in the biome are a 3:1 mix of Blackwood and dark oak. Saplings from Blackwood trees can be harvested and turned into shrubs for planting elsewhere (see Blackwood).

Plants

The ground has wild plants such as berry bushes, large ferns, sugar cane, wild carrots, wild onions, wild rice, brown and red mushroom colonies and wild crops. Patches of Flax and cave urns from Supplementaries are also common.

Ores and blocks

The biome has a wide set of ores, including coal, copper, iron, gold, diamond (in several sizes, including buried diamond), lapis lazuli and redstone. It also has Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks and Sulfur ore in deepslate from Butchery. Black argillite and infected diamond ore from Born in Chaos also appear in the stone.

Mobs and structures

Blackwood Taiga has one of the largest monster lists in the pack. The common monsters (spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies) have the highest weights, and the list then includes many horror mobs at lower weights, such as Ghoul and Slime Golem with weight 25, Dread Hound with weight 7, and Krampus with weight 1. Pumpkin-themed mobs from Born in Chaos are also common, including Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin and Pumpkin Dunce.

Passive animals (sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, wolves, foxes and rabbits) also spawn here, with the sheep and pigs at the highest weights. Bats are the ambient mob, and glow squids spawn in underground water. The water contains a mix of fish and water-ambient creatures, including Glutton Fish and Corpse Fish.

The tables below list every spawn and structure in the biome.

Tips

Blackwood Taiga is dangerous at night, when the monster weights are at their highest and the canopy hides the sky. Carry light sources and a sword, and build a shelter or a base before dusk. Strongholds are more likely to be found here, so check the biome carefully when searching for one.

The Blackwood wood set is a good building material because it has a full range of blocks. Blackwood saplings can be harvested from the trees and used to plant trees in other biomes, which is useful for building a base outside the taiga. Mithril and diamond ore are both present in the stone, so this biome is also a good place to find valuable ore, as long as the mobs are dealt with.
