Chalk is a family of pale stone building blocks added by Regions Unexplored. The family includes the raw chalk block, chalk grass block, chalk bricks, a chalk pillar, and slab, stair and polished variants. Chalk is the main surface and subsurface material of the Chalk Cliffs biome, and it can be mined for building materials anywhere a player finds it. All chalk blocks require a pickaxe to harvest, so a bare-handed or axe-only player gets no drop.

Obtaining

Chalk is not a dropped resource. Players get it in three ways: breaking natural chalk terrain, crafting it from other chalk blocks, or crafting it from chalk and a grass item.

Natural chalk appears only in the Chalk Cliffs biome. The biome uses a forced placement rule with a continentalness range of -0.19 to -0.11, an erosion value below -0.6, and a temperature range of -0.1 to 0.2. Its surface is chalk on steep terrain (a slope of 3 or more) and on any ground that is not above water. Elsewhere the surface is chalk grass block. Deeper underground, the very-deep underfloor layer of the biome is also chalk. Players who want a large supply should therefore mine within Chalk Cliffs.

Crafting

Most of the family is made from a small number of base blocks. Chalk is the base for slabs, stairs and pillars. Polished chalk is the base for chalk bricks. The stonecutter can convert between family members, so one block can be turned into a slab, stairs, pillar or brick block without crafting a full recipe. The grid below lists each recipe.

Usage

Chalk blocks are plain building blocks with no special block-state behaviour, apart from the grass block and the stair, slab and pillar shapes. The base blocks have a hardness of 0.5 and a blast resistance of 0.5. Chalk bricks, chalk brick slabs, chalk brick stairs, chalk pillars and chalk grass block all have a hardness of 0.6 and a blast resistance of 0.6. The chalk brick stairs have a blast resistance of 0.5. The chalk grass block is the only member of the family that changes state at runtime.

Chalk grass block

Chalk grass block is a grass-type block that spreads. On a random tick, if the light level above it is 9 or higher, it tries four random positions within one block horizontally and three blocks down to one block up. Each position that holds plain chalk becomes chalk grass block. The new block takes the snowy state if snow lies on top of it.

The chalk grass block turns back into chalk if the block above it blocks almost all light, or if a full water source sits directly above it. Players can use bone meal on it to grow the plants defined for the chalk grass block. A shovel can flatten it: right-clicking chalk grass block with a shovel turns it into chalk.

Chalk pillars and bricks

The chalk pillar has an axis property with three values, so it can be placed along the x, y or z axis. Chalk bricks are crafted from four polished chalk in a two-by-two grid.

Structures

Regions Unexplored adds its biomes to the vanilla structure biome tags, so vanilla structures can generate in biomes that contain chalk, including Chalk Cliffs.

Items

The table below lists every block in the family with its hardness, blast resistance and block-state properties. The base chalk block, polished chalk and chalk bricks are full cube blocks. The slab and stair variants keep the same tool requirement as their base block.
