Regions Unexplored is a worldgen-centric biome mod for Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge, added to Fear Nightfall as a major overhaul of the Overworld and Nether landscape. It adds about 64 live biomes, roughly 200 blocks in about two dozen wood sets with boats, one hostile mob, and a small set of food items. It requires the Lithostitched worldgen library to run.

The mod changes the world far beyond its own content. Its biome placement, surface rules, tree and grass features and several vanilla behaviours apply across the whole world, so most of the effects are seen in ordinary terrain rather than in a few special regions. In Fear Nightfall the mod is one of the largest land contributors, sharing the surface with Terralith and Biomes O' Plenty under the pack's own biome distribution.

Overview

Regions Unexplored is organised around regions. Most of its biomes are placed as weighted replacements of vanilla biomes, or as toggled variants of them, so a player finds them in familiar climates: rivers, swamps, plains, forests, taigas, jungles, deserts, savannas and nether wastes. A smaller group of special biomes, such as Prismachasm, Redstone Caves, Inferno and Chalk Cliffs, are placed by climate or density parameters instead.

Its biomes are typically defined by ground cover and vegetation. Peat, silt, chalk, argillite, ash and mycotoxic grass change the soil under the trees, and many biomes are defined by their trees, shrubs and flowers. The mod's content is therefore best read as a set of terrain families rather than as a list of new items.

In Fear Nightfall the biome share is set by the pack's own distribution table, which covers Regions Unexplored together with vanilla, Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, Hexerei, YUNG's caves and Sleepy Hollows. The table gives Regions Unexplored about 28% of the land, with Terralith at about 31% and Biomes O' Plenty at about 25%. Regions Unexplored biomes are still subject to their own replacement rules inside that table.

Content

Biomes

Live Overworld biomes include the vanilla replacements Alpha Grove, Ashen Woodland, Bamboo Forest, Baobab Savanna, Blackwood Taiga, Boreal Taiga, Clover Plains, Dry Bushland, Eucalyptus Forest, Fen, Fungal Fen, Flower Fields, Glistering Meadow, Golden Boreal Taiga, Highland Fields, Hyacinth Deeps, Icy Heights, Joshua Desert, Magnolia Woodland, Maple Forest, Old Growth Forest, Outback, Pine Taiga, Poppy Fields, Redwoods, Rocky Reef, Saguaro Desert, Silver Birch Forest, Spires, Towering Cliffs, Willow Forest, Wisteria Grove and Regions Unexplored Rivers. Underground and special biomes include Bioshroom Caves, Prismachasm and Redstone Caves. The Nether gains Blackstone Basin, Infernal Holt, Inferno and Mycotoxic Undergrowth.

Several biomes were retired by the mod and are not placed by default: Barley Fields (Removed), Deciduous Forest, Mauve Hills (Removed), Mountains (Regions Unexplored), Pumpkin Fields (Removed), Rocky Meadow (Removed), Scorching Caves (Removed), Steppe (Removed) and Temperate Grove (Removed).

Wood

The mod adds 23 wood sets, each with logs, planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, signs, boats and chest boats. The main sets are Alpha Wood, Ashen Wood, Baobab Wood, Blackwood, Brimwood, Cobalt Wood, Eucalyptus Wood, Joshua Wood, Kapok Wood, Larch Wood, Magnolia Wood, Silver Birch, Socotra Wood and Wisteria Wood. Oak-like trees are also covered by Flowering and Apple Oak. Painted Planks are a set of 16 colours that is off by default.

Plants, flowers and fungi

Flowers, shrubs, tall grasses, leaf litter, vines and lily pads are listed in Regions Unexplored Flowers, Regions Unexplored Plants, Branches and Shrubs, Snowbelles, Hyacinth Plants and Mycotoxic Plants. The Cacti (Regions Unexplored) are the mod's cactus types. The four bioshroom mushrooms are described in Bioshrooms.

Ground blocks

The mod's soil and stone families are in Regions Unexplored Grass Blocks, Peat and Silt, Chalk, Prismarite and Prismoss, Glistering Blocks and Redstone Caves Blocks.

Mobs

The mod's only hostile mob is Ashen (mob), a zombie-type monster that spawns in Ashen Woodland and Inferno. See Mobs for the wider mob list.

Mechanics

Biome placement is handled by weighted region injectors. A biome listed as a replacement of a vanilla biome takes a share of that biome's climate space, relative to the weights of the other biomes in the same group. Biomes with a weight of 0 are disabled. Vanilla rivers, swamps, plains, forests, taigas and jungles are split into named groups, so that each variant appears only in the climate range set for it. Old Growth Forest is one example of a group member.

The mod's hazards are plants that act directly on entities:

  • Dorcel is a flower that damages entities standing in it, at 1.0 damage per tick, and slows them. It can only be placed on brim-plant soil. Eating its suspicious stew gives Wither for 20 seconds. It is the subject of the Downer advancement.
  • Dusktrap is a two-block-high trap. Any entity inside it takes 3.0 damage per tick and is held in place. While occupied it emits a redstone signal of strength 15.
  • Barrel cactus hurts entities that touch it, for 0.25 cactus damage, like the vanilla Cactus. The taller saguaro cactus is harmless.

The mod's food items include the duskmelon, a crop with three growth stages that grows in light level 9 or higher. Eating a duskmelon slice gives Blindness for 12 seconds with a 100% chance. The hanging earlight fruit gives Glowing for 10 seconds at a 10% chance, and meadow sage gives Instant Health with a 50% chance. The salmonberry is a fox food and resets fall damage when it is walked on.

Many flowers give a suspicious stew effect when used. Examples include Jump Boost from the alpha dandelion and waratah, Speed from the daisy, Mining Fatigue from the mallow, Nausea from the aster, Poison from the bleeding heart, and Saturation from the lupines.

The Ashen mob has 20 health (10 hearts), attack damage 3, armour 2 and movement speed 0.23. It does not burn in sunlight, it is immune to fire, and it does not convert in water. It is a zombie subclass, so it counts as a zombie for other mods that use the zombie tag. It drops 5 experience points.

Prismaglass is a glass that tints the beam of a Beacon with a rainbow that scrolls with game time. It is the subject of the RGBeacon advancement.

Redstone blocks in the mod include pointed redstone, which conducts redstone, and the redstone bulb, which emits light level 12 but does not conduct redstone. Cobalt obsidian needs a diamond tool and cannot be destroyed by the Ender Dragon.

Changes to vanilla

The mod changes vanilla in several ways that the player will notice:

  • Vanilla biomes such as Mushroom Fields, Warm Ocean, Beach, Swamp, Meadow, Cherry Grove, Dark Forest, Desert and Savanna are partly replaced by Regions Unexplored biomes.
  • The Nether surface rules are changed in every Nether biome, not only in Regions Unexplored biomes. Bedrock floors and roofs are kept, netherrack is placed under the top layers, and lava holes appear below Y 32.
  • Trees on peat or silt are placed on peat or silt dirt. Sheep can graze peat and silt grass, and crops can grow on peat and silt farmland.
  • Several vanilla trees and grasses are replaced by datapack overlays. These include oak, birch, pine, mega pine and the grass patch features, so the trees and grass in ordinary forests are taller and more varied.
  • Some vanilla structures can now spawn in Regions Unexplored biomes, because the mod adds its biomes to their biome tags.
  • The mod adds Regions Unexplored blocks to vanilla tags, so that they are mined, burned, composted and tinted like vanilla blocks.
  • Endermen can pick up the nylium blocks, cobalt roots, mycotoxic grass, glistering plants and overgrown bone block of the mod.
  • Leaves, logs, wooden blocks and flowers are added to vanilla item and block tags, so vanilla tools, furnace and flower-pot logic treat them like the vanilla equivalents.

In Fear Nightfall

Fear Nightfall uses its own biome distribution table for the whole world. Regions Unexplored is counted within it at about 28% of the land, as described in Biomes. The horror pack raises the weight of two Regions Unexplored biomes to 6 times their normal value: Blackwood Taiga and Ashen Woodland. The pack also raises Ashen Savanna, a Terralith biome, to 6 times.

Ashen has a spawn weight of 100 in Inferno, which is higher than the weight of 95 for the zombie in the same biome. Ashen is therefore one of the most frequent monsters in Inferno and Ashen Woodland. Ashen does not burn in sunlight, so it is a threat at all times of day rather than only at night. See Finding Structures and Biomes for locating these biomes.

Dorcel and Dusktrap damage entities that walk into them, and the Dusktrap also holds them in place. Check the ground before walking through flowers or traps, particularly in Bioshroom Caves and Redstone Caves.

See Changes to Vanilla for the pack-wide changes that also affect these biomes.
