The Ashen is a hostile mob added by Regions Unexplored. It is a zombie variant with husk sounds: it does not burn in sunlight, it is immune to fire damage, and it does not convert into a drowned in water. It is the only hostile mob the mod adds. It appears in the Inferno biome and, more rarely, in Ashen Woodland.

Because the Ashen is a zombie subclass, it uses the zombie's movement and attack behavior, and it belongs to the vanilla minecraft:zombies entity tag, so effects that target zombies apply to it. Its main difference from a zombie is that it stays on the surface in daylight rather than burning. In Fear Nightfall, Inferno and Ashen Woodland are biomes where players are likely to meet it early, so it is one of the first hostile mobs many players will fight in the pack.

Spawning

Ashen spawns as a hostile monster in two biomes. Its spawn weight is 100 in Inferno, which matches the weight of a vanilla zombie, and 1 in Ashen Woodland, where it is uncommon. Each spawn event creates a group of exactly four Ashen. Placement is on the ground surface, and the spawn check is the standard hostile-mob check, so it needs low light like other monsters. Ashen Woodland replaces part of the vanilla Mushroom Fields biome in the mod's default placement, and Inferno is a deep Overworld biome.

The table below lists the spawn data for each biome.

Behavior

The Ashen has 20 health (10 hearts), an attack damage attribute of 3 (1.5 hearts per hit), and 2 armor with 0 armor toughness. It has no knockback resistance, so hits knock it back. Its movement speed is 0.23, the same as a vanilla zombie, and its follow range is 35 blocks, so it notices a player from much farther away than most zombies do. It is 0.6 blocks wide and 1.95 blocks tall.

Its AI comes from the zombie class, so it walks toward the nearest target, attacks in melee, and can spawn as a baby or with reinforcements as zombies do. It differs from the zombie in three ways:

  • It is not sensitive to sunlight, so it does not burn in daylight.
  • It is fire immune, so fire and burning do not damage it.
  • It does not convert to a drowned when it enters water.

It has no phases and no special attacks. A single Ashen is a weak opponent with its 3 attack damage, and most of the danger comes from groups of four attacking together.

Drops

The mod does not define a loot table for the Ashen. The table below lists what it drops in this pack.

No item drops.

Tips

  • In the Inferno, a group of four will surround a player in an open cave. Fight in a one-block-wide corridor or a doorway so that only one or two can reach you at a time.
  • Fire is no use against the Ashen. Use a sword, axe, or a bow, and use knockback to space out attacks.
  • Because the Ashen does not burn at dawn, an encounter in Ashen Woodland does not end when the sun rises. Plan to fight it in daylight as well as at night.
  • Its follow range of 35 blocks means that a group in Ashen Woodland will often converge on a player from across a clearing. Build a short wall or a pillar of blocks to limit how many can reach you.
  • Ashen Woodland is one of the biomes that Fear Nightfall weights six times more heavily than the mod's default. In this pack the biome is common on the surface, so expect to see the Ashen there more often than in the mod by default.
