The Steppe (Removed) is a dry, savanna-like overworld biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is one of 14 biomes that the mod has retired: it is still registered and still referenced by vanilla-style tags, but it is hidden from the world-creation biome list and is not placed in the overworld by default. In Fear Nightfall a player will not find it through normal terrain generation, so the biome matters mainly as a reference point for the structures and mobs that its data still lists.
The biome uses the same climate settings as a warm, dry plain: a temperature of 1.5, a downfall of 0.15 and no precipitation, so it never rains or snows in it. Its colours are a yellow-green grass (#b2ac65), a khaki foliage (#aab771), blue water (#3f76e4), a pale blue fog (#c0d8ff) and a clear sky blue (#6eb1ff). The ambient cave sound and the stony peaks music are the sounds it would play.
Description
The steppe is open, dry ground with sparse grass. Its ground is the mod's silt surface, which is also used by other Regions Unexplored biomes. Its vegetation is the mod's steppe family of plants: steppe grass, steppe tall grass and steppe shrub, plus a dead steppe shrub. The grass comes from the placed feature regions_unexplored:patch/grasses_steppe, which mixes steppe grass with the vanilla short grass in noise-driven patches. The dead steppe shrub can be crafted into brown dye.
The biome's placed-feature list contains no tree features, so the steppe is treed only by the structures placed in it.
Generation
The steppe is not placed by the mod's biome layout. Its biome target is absent from the overworld table, so it does not take a share of the surface that the mod's biome calibration assigns to Regions Unexplored as a whole. Because it is hidden from the world-creation list, a player cannot select it in the buffet screen either.
The biome remains referenced by the vanilla savanna structure tags and by a number of mod tags, such as the savanna village and ruin sets. Those references are inert while the biome is not placed. The mod's documentation notes that re-enabling the biome through a placement entry in the common configuration is possible but has not been tested.
Features
Ore generation uses the same vanilla-style set as the other overworld biomes: coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond, andesite, diorite, granite, tuff and gravel veins, plus the Born in Chaos infected diamond and black argillite features and the Butchery sulfur ore. Surface features include sugar cane, pumpkin patches, glow lichen, brown and red mushrooms, underwater magma, spring water and spring lava. Underground decoration also includes an amethyst geode, monster rooms and lava lakes.
The steppe uses the vanilla cave and canyon carvers, so caves and ravines cut through the ground as they do in the savanna.
Mobs and structures
The spawn table below is generated from the biome data. The monster list is the largest part of the table, and its top entries are Spider, Skeleton, Creeper and Slime, each with a weight of 100. Notable Born in Chaos and Graveyard entries include the Nightmare, the Dread Hound, the Krampus, the Door Knight, the Restless Spirit and the Nightmare Stalker, all with low weights. The passive list is Armadillo, Rabbit and Wolf, the ambient list is Bat, and the water lists hold Glow Squid, Corpse Fish and a large set of cave and lake fish.

The structure lists that reference the steppe come from the savanna tags and the Nova Structures ruin and hideout sets. A structure in those lists is only placed in the steppe if the biome itself is placed.
Tips
- The steppe is not part of normal Fear Nightfall worldgen, so there is no reason to search for it.
- Dead steppe shrubs can be crafted into brown dye, which is useful if a dead steppe shrub is already in hand.
- The spawn weights in the table apply only if the biome is placed. Do not plan around them in an ordinary world.
