Rocky Reef is a warm ocean biome added by Regions Unexplored. It replaces the vanilla warm ocean in the world's biome source, so it appears wherever a warm ocean would generate. The sea floor is sandy, with stone pillars, palm trees and shrubs. It has a warm, humid climate, rain, and a large set of hostile and aquatic mobs. Players visit it for its ores, its reef-like terrain and its underwater life, and should expect a dangerous mix of land monsters and sea creatures.

Description

Rocky Reef has the warm, humid look of a tropical sea. The sea floor is sand, and the water is blue-green (water colour #35bcd6). Grass and foliage are green (#54b53b and #4eba34). The sky is blue (#76a8ff) and the fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff). The biome plays the grove music track and the cave ambient sound.

The most distinctive terrain feature is the stone pillars. These are stone formations that rise from sand patches on the ocean floor, built up toward sea level. They are placed by a noise-based count across the biome, so they cluster in some areas and are sparse in others.

Vegetation on the shore and above the water includes palm trees and jungle trees, shrubs, and magnolia flowers. Magnolias are placed on stone, stone grass, jungle logs and palm logs. Elephant ear plants grow in dense patches.

Generation

Rocky Reef has a temperature of 0.8 and a downfall of 0.5, and it rains. Its climate falls in the warm range of the overworld, so it generates in the same warm, humid parts of the map as the vanilla warm ocean. In Fear Nightfall the biome makes up about 0.87% of the land surface. Its cave share at y = -30 is about 0.71%.

The biome is not one of the horror biomes weighted 6× by the pack's biome table, but its hostile spawn list still includes many horror mobs from Born in Chaos.

Features

  • Palm and jungle trees. Trees are generated from a tree group on the ocean floor that is not submerged. Palm trees are the main type, with jungle trees less common.
  • Shrubs. A shrub group is placed in the biome, using the Rocky Reef shrub set.
  • Magnolias. Blue, pink and white magnolia flowers grow on stone, stone grass, jungle logs and palm logs.
  • Elephant ear patches. Dense patches of elephant ear plants are placed above the sea floor.
  • Stone pillars. Stone pillars rise from sand patches. They are placed with a noise-based count (noise factor 80) on the ocean floor.
  • Sea floor plants. Warm seagrass, sea pickles, warm kelp, sugar cane, pumpkin patches, glow lichen, and brown and red mushrooms are placed on the sea floor and along the shore.
  • Water springs. Water springs and lava springs appear underground. Underwater magma blocks are also placed on the floor.
  • Ores. The biome has the standard overworld ore set on the ocean floor, including coal, iron, gold, redstone, copper, lapis lazuli and diamond. Gravel, granite, diorite, andesite, tuff and dirt ore patches are also placed.
  • Underground features. Lava lakes, an amethyst geode, and the two monster room types can generate under the biome.
  • Pack additions. Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and black argillite. Butchery adds sulfur ore. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds mithril ore. Supplementaries adds barnacles, wild flax and cave urns. Farmer's Delight adds wild carrots and wild onions.

Mobs and structures

The spawn tables for Rocky Reef are generated below. Hostile mobs are the largest category, with about 54 hostile types. Spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies have the highest weights. Several horror mobs from Born in Chaos and other pack mods also spawn here, including the Dread Hound, Krampus, Spirit of Chaos, Necromancer and Sir Pumpkinhead. The rarest hostile types, such as the Lifestealer, Supreme Bonescaller and Mutant Enderman, have a weight of 1 each.

Water mobs include squid and glow squid, dolphins, tropical fish and many fish species from the pack. Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish are among the aquatic mobs. Bats are the only ambient mob listed.

About 94 structures can generate in the biome. Warm ocean structures such as ocean ruins, shipwrecks and ruined ocean portals are placed here, along with floating islands, palm islands, rafts and conduit ruins. The Firewell structure from Born in Chaos can also generate in Rocky Reef.

Tips

  • Expect a large hostile spawn list. The horror mobs listed above are the most dangerous ones to meet unprepared.
  • Check the spawn tables above before a night trip, since the weights show which mobs are most likely.
  • Lava lakes and lava springs can appear underground beneath the sea floor. Check for lava before breaking blocks in the caves below the reef.
  • Ore is plentiful on the ocean floor. Diamond, redstone and lapis lazuli are all found here.
