Chalk Cliffs is an overworld biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is a band of steep, pale terrain built from chalk, found near the coast where the land rises sharply above the sea. Its surface is visually distinct from the grassland and forest around it, so it works well as a landmark. It also holds a dense mix of pack mobs, including several horror creatures from Born in Chaos, so a player who crosses it should expect a mix of hostile encounters.

Description

The biome is built around chalk. Where a surface is steep (a height difference of 3 or more blocks), or where it is not above water, the top block is Chalk. On flatter ground the top block is chalk grass block, a grass-topped variant of the same stone. Deeper blocks under the surface are also chalk. Grass is tinted a bright, yellowish green (#a3c563), and foliage is a darker olive (#7f9a4e).

The sky is pale blue (#78a7ff) and the fog is a lighter blue (#c0d8ff). Water is a deep blue (#3f76e4). The ambient mood sound is the cave sound, and the background music is the overworld forest track.

Trees are oak bushes with flowers. Flowering shrubs grow between them, and short grass and daisy patches cover open ground.

Shovels flatten chalk grass into path blocks, the same as other grass blocks.

Generation

Chalk Cliffs is placed by its own forced-placement rule, not by the biome weights used for the rest of the overworld. The rule places the biome in a narrow band of the continentalness climate parameter (-0.19 to -0.11), in areas with very low erosion (below -0.6), and in a temperature band from -0.1 to 0.2. This places it near the coast and in cool to mild regions. Its share of the land surface is listed in the infobox.

In Fear Nightfall the biome is not one of the horror biomes given six times the standard weight, so it is not a dedicated horror area. Its mob list still includes many of the pack's horror creatures (see below), because those mobs spawn in every overworld biome that allows them.

Features

  • Ores: the standard overworld ores (coal, copper, iron, gold, lapis, redstone, diamond, and the vanilla dirt, gravel, granite, diorite, andesite and tuff veins), plus ores added by the pack: infected diamond ore from Born in Chaos, black argillite, Mithril ore, and sulfur ore from Butchery.
  • Plants: patches of pumpkins and sugar cane, wild carrots and wild onions from Farmer's Delight, wild flax, and daisy and short grass patches.
  • Cave urns: decorative cave urns from Supplementaries generate in the biome.
  • Road signs: the biome is tagged for road signs from Supplementaries.
  • Water: the biome has underground water with glow squid, and surface water with corpse fish.

Mobs and structures

Most monsters in the biome are the vanilla spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies, which are the most common spawns. The pack's horror creatures from Born in Chaos are also present, with lower weights. Examples are the Dread Hound, Krampus, Nightmare Stalker, Sir Pumpkinhead, Spirit of Chaos and Lifestealer, which are rare. A Slime Golem also spawns in the biome. Passive mobs are limited to sheep, and bats spawn as ambient mobs.

About 98 structures can generate in the biome. They come from several structure packs, including houses, castles, towers, campsites, carts and stalls, and the vanilla Mineshaft and mountain ruined portal. The generated table lists the full set and the loot for each structure.

Tips

  • The slopes are steep. Watch for falls when crossing them, especially at night.
  • Expect a mix of spiders, skeletons, zombies and creepers at night, along with occasional horror mobs. Bring a sword and armour, and a light source for the caves.
  • Wolves spawned here can take the ashen or black variant.
  • Visiting the biome counts toward the Regions Explored and Pioneer advancements.
