The Old Growth Forest is an overworld biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is a warm, rainy forest of large oak trees, fallen logs and dense undergrowth, and it is one of the three members of the mod's forest group. In Fear Nightfall it is a place to gather wood, cave urns and rare ores, and it holds a wide mix of hostile mobs, from the common zombies and skeletons to several of the pack's horror creatures.

Description

The biome has a temperature of 0.8 and a downfall of 0.6, with rain instead of snow, so it has no snow-covered ground. Its water colour is #3F76E4, its fog is pale blue (#C0D8FF) and its sky is #79A6FF. The forest music is minecraft:music.overworld.forest, and its ambient sound is the usual cave sound.

The surface is mostly grass with patches of podzol and coarse dirt, which the surface rules place in clusters rather than evenly across the floor. The trees are oaks in four shapes: the big oak and the small oak (weighted 4 each), the tall oak (weighted 2), and a bush-like oak. Fallen oak logs lie among the trunks, and the ground is filled with shrubs, sparse ferns and sparse short grass.

Generation

The biome is one of the three members of the Regions Unexplored forest group, which splits vanilla forests by temperature. Old Growth Forest takes the warmest part of that range (temperature above 0.2). The other members of the group are Willow Forest (temperature below -0.1) and Maple Forest (temperature between -0.1 and 0.2), and the three share the group's weight. The biome makes up about 0.27% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall. Its share of the cave layer at y = -30 is about 0.09%.

Old Growth Forest is tagged as a forest, a dense-vegetation biome and a stronghold-biased biome. The last tag means that strongholds are more likely to be placed beneath it. The pack's list of biomes weighted at 6 times normal for horror does not include Old Growth Forest. Its monster list is still broad, and it contains many of the pack's horror mobs.

Features

The biome adds the following features on top of its terrain:

  • Trees and shrubs: the oak trees and fallen oak logs described above, and a group of shrubs.
  • Plants: sparse ferns and short grass, glow lichen, red and brown mushrooms, sugar cane, pumpkin patches and forest flowers.
  • Ores: the full set of vanilla ore patches (coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond, plus the stone-type variants of andesite, diorite, granite and tuff). Buried diamond and lapis patches are placed as well.
  • Pack features: Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, black argillite, and the infected variants of diamond ore from Born in Chaos. Deepslate sulfur ore and sulfur regeneration blocks from Butchery are also placed here. Farmer's Delight wild carrots and onions, Supplementaries wild flax and cave urns, and silk cocoons from Critters and Companions also grow in this biome.
  • Water and caves: the biome has underground lava lakes and spring water, and it has amethyst geodes and monster rooms in the caves.

Mobs and structures

The most common hostile mobs are the spider, skeleton, creeper and slime, each with a spawn weight of 100. Zombies have a weight of 95. Among the pack's own monsters, the Ghoul (weight 25) and the Necromancer (weight 18) are the most frequent. Less common horror mobs include the Dread Hound and the Dark Vortex (both weight 7), Krampus (weight 1) and Mutant Zombie (weight 4). Passive mobs are crows, sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, wolves, honey golems, slime golems and ferrets. The biome also has a wide set of water and ambient creatures, such as glow squids, fish and insects.

The biome has 182 structures. Among them are illager camps and hideouts, the Born in Chaos dark tower, catacombs, an evoker fort, a firewell and a graveyard dead tree, along with several small houses and huts. The biome also carries the cave urn feature from Supplementaries.

Tips

  • Bring light before dark. The biome has a large monster list, with spiders, skeletons, creepers and zombies at the top, so it is a poor place to be caught in the open at night.
  • The oak trees and fallen logs are a source of wood. Mithril ore and infected diamond ore are placed in the underground layers, so mining there gives access to those materials.
  • The Dread Hound and the Dark Vortex each have a spawn weight of 7 here, far below the top monsters at 100.
  • The biome is tagged as stronghold-biased, so it is a reasonable place to search for a stronghold.
