The Weevil (in-game name Acorn Weevil) is a small tameable mob added by Critters and Companions. It is an ambient insect that lives in forests and lush caves. Wild weevils never attack anything. Once tamed, a weevil throws Mud Balls at hostile targets, which makes it the mod's ranged companion among its critters. Tamed weevils are fed and bred with acorns, which come from oak leaves.

Weevils are natural spawns in 41 biomes, including the vanilla Dark Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest, Old Growth Forest and Birch Taiga, along with many forest biomes from other mods. The spawn weight is 4 in forest biomes and 10 in lush caves. Natural groups contain 1 to 3 weevils in forests and 1 to 2 in lush caves.

Outside lush caves, a weevil only spawns when standing on a block in the mod's bug_spawn_ground tag (dirt, sand and gravel types) with a raw light level of at least 5. Forest weevils use the normal natural spawner and the ambient mob cap.

Lush caves use a separate spawner added by the mod. Every 40 server ticks, for each player in an underground lush cave (sky light 0), it spawns one weighted entity from the lush cave list within 24 blocks of the player. At most 8 of these critters can exist within a 48-block box around the player, and this spawner ignores the vanilla mob cap. In lush caves, a weevil needs block light above 0 and a floor from the bug ground tag or plain stone.

Behavior

Wild weevils

A wild weevil is passive. It wanders and looks at nearby players. It has no targeting goals and no ranged attack goal, so it does not fight back when hit. It has 8 health (4 hearts), a movement speed of 0.2, a follow range of 16 blocks and a body 0.5 blocks across. A wild weevil that is not named is removed by the normal despawn rules when no player is near.

Taming

A weevil is tamed by offering it an acorn, which is its only food item. Each acorn has a 1 in 10 chance to tame it. A failed attempt still uses up the acorn.

Tamed weevils

A tamed weevil follows its owner and walks toward them when more than 10 blocks away, at a movement speed of 1.4. Right-clicking an owned weevil with an item other than an acorn toggles whether it sits.

Each acorn fed to an owned weevil heals it by 2 health (1 heart), as long as it is below full health. Acorns are also the breeding item.

A tamed weevil gains three targeting goals. It attacks whatever attacks its owner, whatever its owner attacks, and whatever attacks the weevil itself. It will not target a mob owned by the same owner, Creepers, Ghasts or armor stands.

Mud Ball attack

A tamed weevil uses an animated ranged attack. Within 8 blocks of its target, with line of sight, it winds up for 5 ticks and throws a Mud Ball. It attacks once every 20 ticks (1 second). Beyond 8 blocks, it walks toward the target.

The Mud Ball is a thrown projectile that arcs toward its target. It deals 3 damage on a hit, counts as a thrown projectile from the weevil, and disappears on its first hit on an entity or block. If the weevil is not allowed to attack the entity it hits, the Mud Ball deals no damage.

Babies and breeding

Acorns make a weevil enter love mode, and two weevils in love produce a baby. A baby has 4 maximum health (2 hearts) and does not target anything. If the parent is tamed, the baby is tamed to the same owner.

Weaknesses

Weevils belong to the vanilla minecraft:arthropod entity tag, so Bane of Arthropods enchantments deal extra damage to them.

Drops

Weevils have no loot table of their own and drop nothing when killed, whether wild or tamed.

Mud Ball

The Mud Ball is not an item. It is a projectile entity that exists only while in flight, so it cannot be collected or crafted. Its particles use the vanilla Mud item.

Acorns

Acorns, the weevil's food and taming item, are added from Oak Leaves by a global loot modifier. Fortune raises the chance, which the mod sets to 5% to 10%.

No item drops.

Fear Nightfall notes

The Fear Nightfall pack does not change the weevil's spawn weights, which keep the mod defaults. The pack does weight Dark Forest at 6x as a horror biome, so weevils are more likely to be found in that biome in this pack than in vanilla terrain.

Wild weevils are harmless to players, and their spawn rules do not depend on time of day.

Tips

  • Carry acorns into forests, since each acorn has only a 1 in 10 chance of taming a weevil.
  • Feed an owned weevil acorns after a fight to restore its health, since each acorn heals 1 heart.
  • Keep a tamed weevil nearby as a ranged companion: it fires one Mud Ball every 20 ticks at targets within 8 blocks.
  • A tamed weevil also fights whatever attacks its owner, so it can guard an owner who is being attacked.
  • Place a Ladybug near tamed weevils for healing, since Ladybugs heal nearby tamed mobs.
