The Wisteria Grove is a forest biome added by Regions Unexplored to the Fear Nightfall pack. It is built around wisteria trees with lavender-blue foliage and hanging vines, and it takes part of the vanilla Meadow climate space. Its spawn tables are weighted toward hostile mobs, many of them from Born in Chaos, so it is a place where a player should expect constant pressure, especially at night.

Description

The biome uses a grass colour of #72b788 and a foliage colour of #adaaff, so the trees and leaves read as a pale lavender-blue against green ground. Its water is tinted #54a179, its fog is #c0d8ff and its sky is #76a8ff. The grove has a warm climate setting (temperature 1.1, downfall 0.85) with rain.

The trees come from the Wisteria wood set, which provides the logs, planks and other wood items (see Wisteria Wood). Three leaf types appear, each with its own tree form:

  • Sky wisteria trees hang vines from their canopy with a 30% chance per block. The large form uses a 40% chance and adds side branches (10% chance) that use the wisteria wood set.
  • Lavender wisteria trees hang vines with a 30% chance per block. The large form uses a 40% chance and adds the same 10% side branches.
  • Salmon wisteria trees hang vines with a 30% chance per block.

Wisteria shrubs grow in groups alongside the trees and use the same three leaf sets.

Generation

Wisteria Grove replaces part of the vanilla meadow climate. In the Regions Unexplored replacement table it has a weight of 30 against 70 for Highland Fields, so it is the smaller of the two biomes that take over meadow areas. In Fear Nightfall it covers about 0.22% of the land surface and about 0.04% of the cave layer at y = -30. Those shares are small, so a player will usually need to search for the grove rather than walk into it by chance.

The biome is tagged as a forest and is one of the biomes that strongholds are biased toward, so it is worth checking near the edges of meadow and forest areas when looking for a stronghold.

The pack does not put Wisteria Grove on its list of biomes with 6× horror weighting. Its spawns are still mostly hostile, because the monster table is long and includes many horror-mod mobs. See the table below.

Features

The grove has a dense vegetation layer on top of the trees:

  • Flowers: flower patches and tall-flower patches generated for this biome, plus a single aster.
  • Grass: sparse short grass patches.
  • Shrubs: a group of wisteria shrubs (see above).
  • Ores: the standard overworld ore set. These include iron, coal, copper, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond, along with several vanilla stone variants, gravel and dirt patches.
  • Pumpkins and sugar cane: pumpkin patches and sugar cane patches.
  • Silk cocoons: silk cocoons from Critters and Companions, on the ground and hanging from the canopy.
  • Cave urns and road signs: Supplementaries cave urns, wild flax, and road signs.

Aster is the only flower in the pack with a Nausea effect when made into a suspicious stew, lasting 10 seconds. See Flower Effects and Suspicious Stew for the others.

The grove's monster table is headed by the vanilla hostiles at weight 100 (spider, skeleton, creeper and slime) and zombie at 95. Several horror mobs follow at much lower weights:

  • Slime Golem (weight 25) is the most common golem spawn in the grove.
  • Necromancer (weight 18) is one of the more common casters.
  • Dread Hound (weight 7), Dark Vortex (weight 7) and Restless Spirit (weight 10) are among the mid-weight horror mobs.
  • The Pumpkin family (Mr. Pumpkin, Mrs Pumpkin, Senor Pumpkin and Sir Pumpkinhead) are spread across the table with weights from 2 to 7.
  • Krampus (weight 1) and Krampus Henchman (weight 4) are among the rarest spawns in the table.

The creature table has the usual farm animals, along with Honey Golem (weight 6) and Ferret (weight 3). The ambient table includes bats, ladybugs, leaf insects, snails and other small insects. Water spawns include fish from several mods and Glow Squid in underground water.

Structures are placed from a list of 204 entries. Among them are Born in Chaos dark towers (forest and plains variants), the Iron's Spellbooks catacombs and evoker fort, a Terralith fortified village, a Nova Structures bunker and an illager camp, and several farmsteads and campsites from other mods. Horror structures in the list, such as the graveyard and the catacombs, are placed about 30% closer together in this pack than in their source mods.

Tips

  • Watch the monster table closely at night. The grove mixes vanilla hostiles with Born in Chaos and Iron's Spellbooks mobs, so one wave can contain several kinds of enemy.
  • Bring tools for the ore layer. The grove has the full range of overworld ores from iron to diamond, so mining in the stone under the grove is worthwhile.
  • Wisteria wood is a separate wood set. Trees from this biome give Wisteria logs, planks and other items when harvested, and these are useful for building a house that matches the grove's colours.
  • Strongholds are biased toward this biome, so check the grove's edges when looking for a stronghold.
  • Avoid suspicious stew made from aster unless Nausea for 10 seconds is wanted.
