The Blackstone Basin is a Nether biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is a dark, dry, hot variant of the Nether, with blackstone ground, cobalt trees and a mix of Nether hostile mobs and aquatic creatures. Its spawns and ore layout are worth knowing before a player goes into the Nether to mine netherite.
Description
The biome has a near-black blue palette. Its fog and sky colour is #06091b, and its grass, foliage and water tint is #535bf3. The ambient soundscape, music and particles are borrowed from the vanilla Crimson Forest: the Crimson Forest ambient loop and additions sounds, the Crimson Forest music, and warped spore particles at a 2% chance per tick.
The ground is blackstone. The biome's feature list includes vanilla blackstone blobs, and the pack-wide Nether surface rule adds blackstone layers on top of the netherrack. Blackstone Basin also has its own blackstone cluster patches (see below), which scatter raw blocks that craft into plain blackstone. Trees are cobalt trees from the Cobalt Wood set, placed one per layer where the cobalt earlight plant can survive.
Generation
Blackstone Basin is a Nether biome with a temperature of 2.0 and a downfall of 0. It has no precipitation, so the basin never rains or snows. It is placed by the mod as a partial replacement for the vanilla Crimson Forest biome. The pack's own biome table controls how much of the Nether it covers, so the share of biome land shown in the infobox is the figure to use, not the mod's default weights.
It is not among the biomes that Fear Nightfall weights six times as heavily as others, so its spawns and structures follow the pack's standard weighting. Structures in every Nether biome, including this one, are placed with the pack's Sparse Structures tuning, which spaces non-horror structures out to roughly a third of the density they would have at default spacing.
The Nether surface rule from the mod applies to all Nether biomes, not just this one. It places bedrock on the floor and roof, lava holes below y 32, and netherrack under the top five blocks, so the Blackstone Basin layers sit on top of the same base as the rest of the dimension.
Features
Blackstone Basin has a set of ore and terrain features that the mod places in addition to the vanilla Nether ores:
- Blackstone cluster patches. The mod places the blackstone cluster block with a random patch of 16 tries, spread 7 blocks horizontally and 3 vertically. The cluster block drops itself when it survives an explosion, and a crafting recipe turns two of them into one blackstone block.
- Ancient debris. Both large and small ancient debris patches are placed here. Ancient debris needs a diamond pickaxe or better to mine. See the Ancient Debris article for mining notes.
- Vanilla Nether ores. The biome also has blackstone, gold, quartz, magma, gravel and small debris ore features from the vanilla Nether. Fire patches and netherrack speleothems are also placed.
- Nether Expansion features. Blotted netherrack, silt and silt flint ore, pyroclast crusts, moist siltmarram and netherrack speleothems come from the Nether Expansion mod. An obsidian spire feature from Regions Unexplored is added as well.
- Cobalt plants. Cobalt earlight, hanging earlight and cobalt roots are placed as patches, and tall cobalt earlight grows in a separate patch. The cobalt wood set is the tree wood for the biome.
Mobs and structures
The monster spawn table is dominated by Zombified Piglins and Wither Skeletons, so the biome is hostile at any hour. Endermen and Mutant Endermen are present but rare, with a weight of 1 each. Striders are the common passive creature. The ambient aquatic group contains eleven species, including Ash Perch, Ember Koi, Magma Mackerel, Obsidian Pike, Volcano Tuna, Crimson Fangjaw, Inferno Guppy, Soulscale, Warped Guppy, Witherfin and Blazing Swordfish. The generated table below lists the exact weights.
The biome can hold 77 structures from the mods. Vanilla Nether Fortresses, Bastion Remnants and Ruined Portals are among them, along with structures from other packs such as Moog's Nether mods, Formations, AdoraBuild, Nova Structures and Iron's Spellbooks. The pack adds loot to structure chests, so structures found here carry the pack's extra loot. The full list is in the generated table below.
Tips
Mine ancient debris with a diamond pickaxe or better, and check the blackstone cluster patches for blackstone. Zombified Piglins are the most common threat, so keep a sword ready when crossing open ground. Wither Skeletons are a serious threat, since their attacks inflict the wither effect. Nether fortresses and bastions in the basin are worth exploring for chest loot, but expect hostile mobs around each one.
