Peat and silt are two parallel families of natural dirt and grass blocks added by Regions Unexplored. Each family has seven blocks: a grass block, dirt, coarse dirt, dirt path, farmland, mud and podzol. The two families have identical block properties and differ only in name and in the biomes that generate them. They form the ground cover of the mod's surface-layer biomes. They affect which crops can be planted, which animals spawn, and how trees and sheep change the ground around them.
Obtaining
Peat and silt blocks generate naturally. The Regions Unexplored surface rules place peat and silt in biomes tagged surface/peat and surface/silt, and the overworld surface rule layers them on top of the terrain, with a peat or silt dirt layer beneath the surface. Cave carvers cut through peat and silt grass and dirt in the same way as vanilla grass and dirt, so caves opened in these biomes expose the same blocks.
The blocks can also be changed in play:
- Trees placed by any mod through the trunk placer convert the dirt under the trunk into peat dirt or silt dirt when the ground is peat or silt, and convert alpha grass to vanilla dirt.
- A sheep that grazes peat or silt grass turns the grass into peat or silt dirt, provided mob griefing is enabled.
- Shovels flatten peat and silt blocks into dirt paths.
Two blocks can be crafted:
- Peat coarse dirt and silt coarse dirt are made from 2 dirt of the same family with 2 gravel and yield 4 coarse dirt.
- Peat dirt and silt dirt are also used in recipes that craft ashen dirt with ash (see the usage table below).

Usage
All peat and silt blocks are shovel-mineable and have the same hardness and blast resistance for their type: 0.5 for dirt, coarse dirt, mud and podzol, 0.6 for grass blocks and farmland, and 0.65 for dirt paths. Farmland has moisture states 0 to 7.
Peat and silt interact with vanilla systems in these ways:
- Crops. Peat farmland and silt farmland are listed as blocks that support crops. Crops can be placed on them without the vanilla farmland requirement, so they behave as farmland for planting. The farmer villager profession also lists both farmland blocks as secondary job-site blocks.
- Animals. Wolves and foxes can spawn on peat and silt grass and on podzol. Sheep graze peat and silt grass as described above. Snow layers can sit on peat mud and silt mud.
- Trees. Tree trunks placed on peat or silt grow out of peat or silt dirt rather than vanilla dirt, so trees in these biomes keep the family's ground under their roots.
- Tools. Peat and silt are mineable with a shovel, and a shovel flattens them into dirt paths.
