The Fungal Fen is a swamp biome added by Regions Unexplored. It is the mushroom-heavy member of the swamp family, with giant mushrooms, mycelium patches and mushroom-themed water life among its swamp features. In Fear Nightfall it is a horror biome in the broad sense: its spawn list is dominated by the pack's hostile mobs, so a player crossing it at night meets a steady flow of hostile spawns.

Description

The Fungal Fen is a damp lowland biome. The grass is tinted #7cb747, the foliage #a2c64d and the water #60b78c. The fog is pale green-grey (#c0e1d1) and the sky is a clear blue (#6eb1ff). It plays swamp music and cave ambience.

The ground is mostly grass and dirt, broken up by Mycelium. A surface rule places mycelium in noise-driven patches rather than as a uniform layer. Shallow water with a special water-edge feature runs along the shores.

The vegetation is built around pine-family trees and mushrooms. Giant pink, giant brown and giant red mushrooms grow alongside a lush pine variant. Pine-family shrubs, pink bioshroom patches, ferns and short grass fill the gaps between the trees.

Generation

Regions Unexplored splits vanilla swamps into named groups. The Fungal Fen takes the cool part of the swamp band: temperature between -0.45 and -0.1 and humidity below -0.35. The Fen takes the same temperature band with humidity above -0.35, so the two share that zone.

In Fear Nightfall the biome has a measured share of 0.00% of land, so it is effectively absent from typical terrain. It is not among the biomes the pack weights 6× for horror.

Features

  • Trees: the tree group picks, by weight, a lush pine (weight 2), a giant pink bioshroom (weight 1), a giant red mushroom (weight 1) or a giant brown bioshroom (weight 1). Four tree placements are attempted per chunk.
  • Shrubs: pine-family shrubs.
  • Ground cover: pink bioshroom patches, fern patches and short grass patches.
  • Mushrooms: wild brown and red mushroom colonies from Farmer's Delight.
  • Surface: mycelium patches.
  • Underground: the standard overworld ores, including coal, copper, iron, gold, lapis, redstone and diamond, plus a Born in Chaos infected diamond ore feature. Lava lakes appear both underground and on the surface.
  • Fire: the biome has the increased_fire_burnout tag, so fires burn out faster here than in most biomes.

Mobs and structures

Among the hostile spawns are the Ghoul, Necromancer, Nightmare, Krampus, Dread Hound and Slime Golem, along with many other Born in Chaos and Graveyard monsters. Mooshrooms spawn in groups of four to eight and axolotls in groups of two to four. Passive creatures include frogs, box turtles, wolves and mooshrooms, and ambient life includes bats, roly-polies, snails and dragonflies. In the water, Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish spawn as creatures, and Brown and Red Shrooma spawn as water ambient life.

151 structures can generate in the biome. They include the Giant Mushroom Grave and Memorial Trees (Giant Mushroom Grave and Memorial Trees) from Graveyard, covens from Hexerei, Born in Chaos structures, mineshafts and swamp villages. The table below lists them all.

Tips

  • Arrive before dark. The spawn list is heavy with hostile mobs at night.
  • Bring light sources. Many hostile mobs spawn in dark areas.
