The Krampus is a hostile boss-tier monster added by Born in Chaos. It is a large, armoured melee attacker with 250 health (125 hearts). It spawns in cold, dark parts of the overworld, and it can also be summoned by a player's hidden naughtiness score, although that mechanic is switched off in Fear Nightfall (see Naughtiness and Krampus). Killing it gives the Krampus Horn, which is a crafting ingredient, and Krampus's Bag, a loot container.

Spawning

Krampus spawns naturally. Its spawn placement check, which replaces the vanilla rule for this mob, requires all of the following:

• The world's day time must be at least 228,400 ticks (about 9.5 in-game days). Before that point, Krampus does not spawn naturally at all.
• Light must be low. The spawn spot must have a raw light level of 4 or less if it can see the sky, or 0 or less if it cannot.
• The biome must be an overworld biome, or a biome in the Terralith set. Deep Dark and Mushroom Fields are excluded.
• The biome's base temperature, multiplied by 100, must be at most 0.15. This restricts natural spawns to biomes with a base temperature near zero or below.
• The krampusSpawn gamerule must be true. It is on by default.

Fear Nightfall adds its own spawn entry on top of this. The pack registers Krampus in every overworld biome, plus Willow Swamp, Sleepy Hollows, Undergrowth and Mycotoxic Undergrowth, with weight 1 and a group of exactly one. Krampus is a solitary spawn: the group size is always 1.

Krampus Henchman

The Krampus Henchman, a weaker companion mob with a spawn weight of 4 and groups of 2 to 3, is listed in the Variants section.

On spawning, Krampus receives the arrival effects described under Behavior, and snow is placed on open air blocks around it.

Behavior

Krampus is a melee-only monster. Its melee goal fires only when a target is within about 1.9 blocks and in line of sight. It chases at 1.2 times its movement speed of 0.26, wanders at 0.8 speed when idle, and has a follow range of 32 blocks. It targets the nearest player and also retaliates against whatever hurts it.

Immunities. Krampus ignores damage from arrows, falls, drowning, lightning, the Wither effect, and wither skulls.

Attack and knockback. Krampus deals 14 attack damage, has 10 armour, and 0 armour toughness. Its knockback resistance is 0.9, which makes it very hard to push back. Each hit it lands on a non-blocking player, mob or monster has a 35% chance to trigger its special effect:

• A player is disarmed. The item in the player's main hand drops at their feet, with a pickup delay of 45 ticks (2.25 seconds), and the hand is left empty. The player also receives the Lost Items effect for 35 ticks.
• A player who is blocking with a shield takes 25 durability damage on the shield, and the shield goes on a 100-tick (5-second) cooldown. This happens on every hit that lands on a shield-blocking target, whether or not the 35% roll succeeded.

Low-health reaction. Krampus has a single phase, but it reacts when it takes damage while at or below 60% of its maximum health and not on fire. It then roars, gains the Snow Storm effect for 800 ticks (40 seconds), and gets Slowness IV for 25 ticks. The reaction is gated by an internal counter that is set to 5 when it fires and counts down on later hits, so it does not repeat on every hit.

Death. Krampus is removed 40 ticks after death and gives 50 experience points. A player who kills Krampus is awarded an advancement.

Summon. Krampus has a special arrival sequence when it spawns. It receives Slowness VIII for 35 ticks, Invisibility for 5 ticks, Resistance V for 35 ticks and the Block Break effect for 40 ticks. A cloud of snow particles plays at the spawn site.

Drops

Krampus always drops a Krampus Horn and a Krampus's Bag. Looting adds to the drop count of both. Its other drops are Permafrost Shards, Birch Branches, Pieces of Dark Metal (affected by looting), and Monster Flesh. See the table below for amounts.

Krampus's Bag

Krampus's Bag is an Epic-rarity container that cannot stack and is fire resistant. Right-clicking it consumes one bag and gives the following items:

• 7 to 14 coal.
• With 45% chance, one item from the born_in_chaos_v1:rareloot item tag.
• With 90% chance, one or two items from the born_in_chaos_v1:unusualloot item tag.
• A set of extra rewards from optional mods, if those mods are loaded. These are Alex's Mobs, Aquamirae, Cataclysm, Create, Galosphere, Gnumus, Nether Exp, Iron's Spellbooks and Alex's Caves. Items from a mod that is not loaded are not given.

Using the bag starts a 20-tick (1-second) cooldown on the item.

Krampus Horn

The Krampus Horn stacks to 64 and has no right-click action. It is used as an ingredient in the recipe for Stormcaller's Horn.

Variants

Krampus has one related mob, the Krampus Henchman. The Henchman has 30 health (15 hearts), 4 attack damage, 5 armour and a speed of 0.29. It gains Resistance V and Block Break for 40 ticks when it spawns. It drops Coal, Monster Flesh and Permafrost Shards.

Naughtiness and Krampus

In the base mod, Krampus is also a punishment for players who accumulate a high naughtiness score by killing villagers, wandering traders and animals. At a score of 100 or more, a Krampus is summoned beside the player. Fear Nightfall switches this off with naughtinessMechanics false, which is set on every datapack load, so the punishment Krampus does not appear in this pack. Natural spawning is unaffected.

Tips

• Krampus resists knockback almost entirely (knockback resistance 0.9), so knocking it back to space yourself is unreliable. Ranged attacks avoid its melee reach.
• A disarm drops your main-hand item at your feet with a 2-second pickup delay. Pick it up quickly, or keep a second weapon in the hotbar.
• Expect the roar and Snow Storm once Krampus drops to 60% health.
• Looting raises the count of Krampus's Horn and Krampus's Bag drops and the Pieces of Dark Metal drop, so use a Looting weapon when farming it.
