Coniferous Forest is a cool, humid overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is a common forest in Fear Nightfall, covering about 0.85% of land surface, and its tall fir trees, dense mob spawns and many structures make it one of the more dangerous forests to cross at night. Its cold-weather sibling, the Snowy Coniferous Forest, has its own tree feature, structure list and mob mix.

Description

The biome has a temperature of 0.45 and a downfall of 0.5, and it has rain rather than snow. Its fog colour is a pale blue-white, its sky is a light blue, and its water is a deep blue. Its ambient sound is the standard cave sound and its music is the overworld forest track.

The forest is densely covered by fir trees, which are tall conifers with a fir log trunk and fir leaves. Between the trees the ground is mostly bare, with scattered grass, ferns and small flowers. The flowers are cornflowers, dandelions, oxeye daisies and poppies, and they are scattered about one time in four per chunk attempt. Toadstools and wild carrot and onion patches also appear on the ground.

Snowy Coniferous Forest

The Snowy Coniferous Forest has a temperature of -0.25 and falls as snow instead of rain. It has its own tree feature and its own structure list, which includes igloos and ice spider dens. It also adds white rabbits, snow foxes and cold-variant frogs by biome tag. Its water and fog colours match the regular biome. It covers about 0.24% of land surface, so it is much less common than the regular biome.

Generation

The Coniferous Forest sits in the cool, humid part of the overworld climate, next to other forests and taiga-like biomes. Biomes O' Plenty supplies about a quarter of all land in the pack, and this biome is one of its common forests, which is why it appears often.

Fear Nightfall weights many horror biomes higher than vanilla. The pack's spookier world settings give 6× weight to Dark Forest, Ominous Woods, Spider Nest, Blackwood Taiga, Ashen Woodland, Sleepy Hollows, Willow Swamp, dead forests, Ashen Savanna, bayous and the horror caves, but the Coniferous Forest is not on that list. It is still a forest in the same cool, humid climate band where horror is concentrated, so horror structures are common here. The horror structure placement (about 30% closer together) applies to structures that generate in this biome.

Trees are placed on land only, not in water. The biome gets about 10 to 11 tree attempts per chunk.

Features

  • Fir trees. Each tree attempt picks either a regular fir tree or a large fir. A regular fir has a trunk height of 5 to 28 blocks, and a large fir has a trunk height of 20 to 40 blocks. About one tree in three is a regular fir and the rest are large firs. The trunks are made of fir logs and the foliage of fir leaves.
  • Flowers. Cornflowers, dandelions, oxeye daisies and poppies, scattered sparsely as described above.
  • Plants and crops. Ferns, grass, toadstools, wild flax, wild carrots and wild onions. The wild carrot and onion patches are added by Farmer's Delight and the wild flax by Supplementaries.
  • Pumpkin and berry patches. Rare berry bushes and pumpkin patches from vanilla.
  • Cave urns. Supplementaries cave urns.
  • Ores. Vanilla dirt, gravel, granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, coal, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, copper, and diamond veins, The biome also generates Black Argillite from Born in Chaos, sulfur ore from Butchery, Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, and Born in Chaos infected diamond ore veins.

Mobs and structures

The monster spawn table is long. The most common hostiles are spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes, each at weight 100, followed closely by zombies at weight 95. Rarer horror mobs include Ghoul (weight 25), Necromancer (weight 18), Dread Hound (weight 7), Krampus (weight 1) and Nightmare Stalker (weight 2). The Snowy Coniferous Forest swaps in Revenant (weight 25) and Nightmare (weight 7) and adds other snow-specific mobs to the same table.

Passive mobs are sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, foxes, wolves and rabbits, with bats, glow squids and a range of water creatures in the caves and lakes.

Over two hundred structures can generate here. Notable ones include the Dark Tower and Clown Caravan from Born in Chaos, the Catacombs and Evoker Fort from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, the Illager Hideout and Manor, Infernal Pumpkin Patch and Firewell. Several village sets from Overhauled Villages also generate here, including fortified villages and underground villages.

Tips

  • Arrive with armour and a sword or a bow, and set up light before dark. The monster spawn table is heavy, and skeletons and spiders are the most likely hostiles at night.
  • Carry plenty of torches or other light sources. The forest floor is shaded by the fir canopy, so mobs spawn easily in the dim areas underneath.
  • Fir logs are a useful source of wood. The trees are tall, so bring an axe.
  • Sheep, pigs, cows and chickens spawn here, so food is available, but many structures in the biome are dangerous.
