ChoiceTheorem's Overhauled Village (CTOV) is a worldgen-only mod that overhauls villages and pillager outposts. It adds no items, blocks, mobs, recipes or mechanics. Instead it adds biome-themed village and outpost structures, which the game places alongside the vanilla ones. Players meet CTOV only through the villages and outposts it generates, so the mod changes what a village looks like and how often a given type appears. It requires the Lithostitched library to run; without it the mod adds nothing.
Overview
CTOV adds 21 biome-themed village variants and 11 biome-themed pillager outpost variants. Each village variant comes in three sizes (small, medium and large), which makes 63 village structures in total. Each outpost variant is a single structure. The vanilla villages and outposts are kept, so CTOV only adds entries to the pool that the game picks from. The mod's default configuration enables every village variant except the underground one, and every outpost variant except the mesa one.
Each village is built from jigsaw pieces, with its own start piece, house pool, deco pool, road pool, jobsite pool and terminator pool. The chests in CTOV villages use CTOV's own loot tables, which cover the village's house and jobsite types, such as the library, smith, farm, bakery and forager.
In Fear Nightfall CTOV is one of several mods that share the village and outpost structure sets. The sets are described in Structures and Villages.
Content
Villages added by the mod, grouped by biome:
- Plains and savanna: Savanna Village (Native) is the savanna village in the native style. The plains variants are listed with the other types in the overview of village structures.
- Desert: Desert Oasis Village.
- Snowy and taiga: Igloo Village for the snowy igloo variant.
- Jungle: Jungle Tree Village for the jungle tree variant.
- Mountain: Alpine Village.
- Fortified variants: Fortified Villages.
- Holiday variant: Christmas Village.
- Mushroom fields: the mushroom village, built around mushroom blocks.
- Underground: Underground Village. It is not enabled by default.
The full list of the mod's village types, with their biome tags and sizes, is on Overhauled Villages. The mushroom, beach, dark forest and swamp villages are covered on Overhauled Villages (other).
Pillager outposts added by the mod are covered on Pillager Outposts. The mod's outposts are placed in badlands, beach, dark forest, desert, jungle, mountain, plains, savanna, snowy, swamp and taiga biomes. They use the same spawn setup as vanilla outposts, with pillagers, evokers, vindicators and witches.
Other content in the pack that uses the same villages:
- Towns and Towers Villages, from the Towns and Towers mod, which shares the village and outpost sets with CTOV.
- Villages&Pillages, which adds a witch village to the same village set.
Mechanics
CTOV villages are placed by the vanilla minecraft:villages structure set, and CTOV outposts by minecraft:pillager_outposts. Each variant is registered once for each enabled size, and each entry has a weight set in the config. The default weights are 10 for small villages, 4 for medium villages, 1 for large villages and 1 for outposts. The game picks an entry only from the variants whose biome tag matches the biome at the chunk, so a CTOV village appears only in the biomes its variant is tuned for.
CTOV villages are placed with terrain adaptation, so the ground at each village site is reshaped to fit the surrounding terrain. The structures start within 80 blocks of their centre piece.
The mod adds its village entries to the vanilla #minecraft:village structure tag. Lookups that use that tag, including /locate commands, therefore also find CTOV villages. Players can locate a specific CTOV structure with /locate structure ctov:<name>.
Villages are generated when a chunk is first created. Chunks that were already generated before the mod was added keep their existing villages, so CTOV only adds structures to chunks that are generated after it is installed.
Because CTOV villages share the set with the vanilla and other mod villages, the game chooses one village type at each placement, and the choice depends on the biome. For the pack's spacing and density settings, see Finding Structures and Biomes.
Changes to vanilla
CTOV does not replace or modify any vanilla structure. It only appends entries:
- It adds its village entries to the
minecraft:villagesstructure set, leaving the vanilla village entries in place. - It adds its outpost entries to the
minecraft:pillager_outpostsstructure set, leaving the vanilla outpost in place. - It appends its village tag to the vanilla
#minecraft:villagetag, so tag lookups also find CTOV villages.
The mod does not change vanilla loot tables, villager trades, recipes, mob spawn rules, game rules or biome features. It runs on the server only, and it has no keybinds or screens.
In Fear Nightfall
The pack keeps CTOV villages in its shared village set, next to Luki's Grand Capitals, Towns and Towers, Villages&Pillages, the Dungeons and Taverns villages and the Terralith fortified villages. The pack weights the village types equally, so no single village mod dominates the set.
CTOV's outposts are in the pillager outpost set with the vanilla, Luki's and Towns and Towers outposts. The pack raises the weight of each CTOV outpost to 5 to match the other outpost types. The mod's default is 1.
Pillager outposts are hostile camps, but they are not among the pack's horror structures, so they are not placed more often in the horror biomes. Villages are not horror structures either.
