Towns and Towers is a worldgen mod by Kubek, Biban_Auriu and Cristelknight999 that adds new villages, pillager outposts and two other structure types to the overworld. It adds no items, blocks or mobs. Its content is structure files, loot tables and biome tags built from vanilla blocks and vanilla mobs. It requires Cristel Lib (cristellib 3.1.7 in this pack). In Fear Nightfall it is one of the sources in the shared village and pillager outpost sets, so its structures appear alongside the vanilla, Luki's and Overhauled Villages versions.
Overview
The mod is a structure overhaul. It does not replace vanilla structures: each structure it adds is a separate entry that the game can choose, and the pack keeps the vanilla villages and outposts in the same sets. The mod's structures fall into three placement sets, which its configuration files name towns (villages), towers (pillager outposts) and other (the desert mimic and the ocean wreckage).
For a player, the main effect is variety. A village or outpost is drawn from a pool tied to its biome, so the same biome can produce a different village style on a different seed. The pack's structure rules (see In Fear Nightfall below) keep these structures from overlapping one another or the vanilla structures near them.
Content
Villages
The mod has 27 village types. Eighteen are tied to a biome family, and nine are "exclusive" variants that the mod's config describes as meant for biomes from other worldgen mods. Each biome-tied village has its own street, house and well pieces:
- badlands: pueblo village (
village_badlands) - beach: lighthouse village (
village_beach) - birch forest: Romanian village (
village_birch_forest) - flower forest: Japanese village (
village_flower_forest) - forest: forest ruins village (
village_forest) - grove: villager outpost village (
village_grove) - jungle: tribal village (
village_jungle) - meadow: Swiss village (
village_meadow) - mushroom fields: fantasy village (
village_mushroom_fields) - ocean: ship village (
village_ocean), built on ships in ocean biomes - old growth taiga: Polish village (
village_old_growth_taiga) - savanna plateau: ramshackled village (
village_savanna_plateau) - snowy slopes: inn village (
village_snowy_slopes) - snowy taiga: Viking village (
village_snowy_taiga) - sparse jungle: Polynesian village (
village_sparse_jungle) - sunflower plains: farm village (
village_sunflower_plains) - swamp: boat village (
village_swamp) - wooded badlands: tipi village (
village_wooded_badlands)
The nine exclusive villages are the classic, Iberian, Mediterranean, Nilotic, piglin, rustic, Swedish, Tudor and wandering trader camp villages. The config comments give Terralith and Biomes O' Plenty as examples of those other mods.
The village layouts are covered on Towns and Towers Villages. For the villager professions that appear in villages, see Villagers.
Pillager outposts
The mod has 31 outpost types: 23 tied to a biome (badlands, beach, birch forest, desert, flower forest, forest, grove, jungle, meadow, mushroom fields, ocean, old growth taiga, savanna, savanna plateau, snowy beach, snowy plains, snowy slopes, snowy taiga, sparse jungle, sunflower plains, swamp, taiga and wooded badlands) and eight exclusive variants (classic, Iberian, Mediterranean, Nilotic, Oriental, rustic, Swedish and Tudor). The outpost pieces place pillagers, vindicators and an outpost captain, which uses the pillager entity. The jungle and snowy variants also place captive villagers. Pillagers and vindicators are hostile mobs. For how raids and illagers work in general, see Raids and Illagers.
Other structures
Two structures are in the "other" set:
- Desert mimic (
towns_and_towers:mimic_desert): a structure that uses the vanilla desert pyramid biome tag and starts at Y 35. Its rooms hold chests and trapped chests. - Ocean wreckage (
towns_and_towers:wreckage_ocean): a shipwreck that starts at Y 62 in cold, normal, lukewarm and warm ocean biomes. See Towns and Towers Wreckage and Mimic.
Loot
The mod ships its own loot tables for village houses, the village blacksmith, the piglin house, the wandering trader hut, outpost armories, outpost food, outpost barrels and forest ruin archaeology. The pack maps every structure-mod chest table to a vanilla chest role and keeps the original loot (see Loot and Chests). Forest ruin archaeology loot is covered at Archaeology and Pottery Sherds.
Mechanics
Placement
Each set has its own spacing, separation and exclusion rules. The values below are the in-game values read from the server, in chunks:
| Set | Spacing | Separation | Exclusion zone | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Villages (towns) |
97 | 23 | 5 chunks from vanilla villages | 1 |
Pillager outposts (towers) |
92 | 23 | 10 chunks from the mod's villages | 0.2 |
Other (other) |
92 | 46 | none | 1 |
Spacing is the maximum distance, in chunks, at which the game places the next structure of the same set. Separation is the minimum distance between two of them. The outpost set uses a frequency of 0.2, so only some of its eligible positions get an outpost. The exclusion zones keep outposts away from the mod's villages and the mod's villages away from vanilla villages.
Biome choice
A village or outpost spawns only in a biome that its tag allows. The pack rebuilt the mod's village, outpost and desert-pyramid biome tags as the union of every mod's biomes (see Changes to vanilla below). Villages and outposts from different sets do not share a spot: the game chooses one of the types valid for the local biome.
Configuration
The server's config folder holds two files for the mod, structure_rarity_new.json5 (spacing, separation and frequency) and structure_enable_or_disable_new.json5 (one switch per structure). Setting a structure's switch to false disables it.
Changes to vanilla
- Biome tags: the mod's village, outpost and desert-pyramid biome tags shipped with
replace:true, which removed every biome added by other mods from those tags. The pack rebuilt them as the union of all the biomes. - Shared sets: the mod's villages and outposts are placed alongside the vanilla village and outpost types, so vanilla structures still spawn.
In Fear Nightfall
- Village set: Towns and Towers is one of seven village sources, each weighted equally: vanilla, Luki's Grand Capitals, Overhauled Villages, Towns and Towers, Dungeons and Taverns, Villages&Pillages and the fortified villages from Terralith.
- Outpost set: Towns and Towers is one of four pillager outpost sources: vanilla, Luki's, Towns and Towers, and Overhauled Villages. The Overhauled Villages weight is raised to match the others.
- Sparse Structures: the pack applies a factor of 2.88 to the mod's "other" set. The mod's default spacing for that set is 32, and the in-game spacing is 92 (32 × 2.88, rounded). The table above shows the in-game values, not the mod defaults.
- Overlap guard: when a larger structure from another set would overlap a surface structure, the smaller one is skipped. Other surface structures keep a 6-chunk buffer around village spots. See Structures.
- Seeds: every set gets its own placement seed, so the mod's sets do not land on the same spots as other mods' structures that reuse a seed.
- Danger: outposts are where pillagers and vindicators appear. Their behaviour is vanilla, and the mod does not change them. For the pack's horror content, see Horror and Spooky Content; for biome rules, see Biomes.
