Raids and Illagers
The Raids and Illagers of Fear Nightfall are the hostile illager groups that the pack's mods add to the overworld, together with the raids, camps and bosses that involve them. Illagers come from several mods, including Supplementaries, Born in Chaos, The Graveyard, Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, The Hordes, Dungeons and Taverns, Butchery and the village and outpost mods. Each one brings a different kind of illager, so the same pillager or vindicator can behave very differently depending on where it is found.
A player should care about illagers for three reasons. They guard many of the pack's structures, they drop materials used later in progression, and they attack in groups. Most of them are dangerous at night, and several are tied to the horror biomes and structures that give the pack its theme.
Where illagers appear
Illagers appear in four ways in this pack:
- Raids. A raid is a timed wave of raiders that starts near a village. Vanilla pillagers, vindicators and evokers take part, and mods add their own raiders to the same raider system.
- Structures. Outposts, camps, fortresses and houses hold illagers as their monster spawns. These are the most reliable places to meet them.
- Hordes. Night-time attack events send groups of hostile mobs at a nearby player. Illager hordes come from Graveyard Hordes and from Horde Nights.
- Boss and special spawns. A few illager-type mobs are bosses or rare natural spawns, described below.
Raids
Raids in Fear Nightfall use the vanilla raid system with additions from Supplementaries and Born in Chaos.
Naval raids
Supplementaries lets a raid start from open water instead of from land. A raid started near a village may spawn in open water with a chance of 0.75 (naval_raid_chance). In a naval wave, each pillager that would have spawned has a 0.5 chance to become a Plunderer instead (naval_raid_plunderer_chance). Every plunderer in a naval wave gets its own dark oak boat, and the other raiders fill the remaining boats. Pillagers can also fire cannon boats during these waves. Naval raids are the main reason a player meets illagers at sea.
Raider types
| Raider | Mod | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pillager | vanilla | Crossbow raider. Pillagers can crew cannon boats. |
| Vindicator | vanilla | Melee raider. See Magehunter Vindicator for the Iron's Spells variant. |
| Evoker | vanilla | Spellcaster raider. See Evocation Spells for the Iron's Spells magic. |
| Plunderer | Supplementaries | Pirate melee raider that can board and steer boats. See Plunderer. |
| Missionary Raider | Born in Chaos | Raid version of the Missioner. It counts toward a raid's total. |
| Acolyte | The Graveyard | Hostile illager that fights back when a raider attacks it, and alerts nearby illagers. See Acolyte. |
Illagers open doors mostly during raids. Acolytes only path through doors during a raid, so outside a raid a closed door can stop a pursuing acolyte. The Corrupted Illagers follow a similar rule. This makes a wooden door or a solid wall a practical defence against most illager groups outside an active raid.
Illager mobs by mod
Supplementaries
The Plunderer is the pack's main seafaring enemy. It appears in Galleon shipwrecks and in naval raids. Plunderers have 24 health and an attack damage attribute of 6, and they target players first. The Cannons and Cannon Boats are the artillery that makes naval raids dangerous. Cannonballs break blocks and damage mobs, and the cannon block is very hard to destroy.
Born in Chaos
The Missioner is a boss-class mob that spawns naturally in the overworld at night. It has 150 health and fires magic charges. The Missionary Raider has the same stats and joins raid waves. Both drop charms, Dark Metal materials and the Missionary Hat, so the two versions give the same rewards.
The Graveyard
The Corrupted Illagers are the Corrupted Pillager and the Corrupted Vindicator. Both are melee-only, have 24 health, and drop Corruption one each. They appear in crypt structures, in the nightly Graveyard Hordes, and from spawn eggs. Their horde groups are about 40 percent Corrupted Pillager, 40 percent Corrupted Vindicator and 20 percent Acolyte. The Lich progression depends on Corruption, so these mobs are an early source of it.
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks
The Archevoker is a 60-health spellcaster that fights with Evocation Spells and summons vexes. It is placed in the Evoker Fort. The Magehunter Vindicator is a vindicator that always holds a Magehunter sword and has no ranged or spell attacks. It is placed in the fort's towers.
The Hordes
The Hordes makes vindicators, evokers, pillagers, ravagers, vexes and witches hunt infection-capable mobs within 10 blocks. Evokers, pillagers and witches flee from infected mobs. The same mod also reskins a zombie pillager with 24 health. Illagers are also part of the Horde Nights spawn tables.
Other illager sources
- Butchery. The Vindicator Butcher's House is a small surface house with two vindicators, six Butcher villagers and two Farmers. The Withered Heart and Pillager Friend effects come from Butchery's pillager armour.
- Dungeons and Taverns. The Illager Hideout and Manor and the Dungeons and Taverns Outposts and Camps house illager groups.
- Villages and outposts. Pillager Outposts come from several village and outpost mods. They hold pillagers and, in some variants, vindicators, evokers and witches.
Structures where illagers live
The table below lists the illager-holding structures and the places where they generate. Exact biomes and counts are on each structure's page.
| Structure | Illagers found | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Pillager Outposts | Pillagers, vindicators, evokers, witches | Pillager Outposts |
| Evoker Fort | Illagers and an Archevoker | Evoker Fort |
| Illager Hideout and Manor | Illager groups | Illager Hideout and Manor |
| Dungeons and Taverns camps | Pillagers and villagers | Dungeons and Taverns Outposts and Camps |
| Galleon | One pillager and one plunderer | Galleon |
| Vindicator Butcher's House | Two vindicators | Vindicator Butcher's House |
| Crypts | Corrupted Illagers and Acolytes | Crypt |
Evoker Forts are rare in this pack. The Fear Nightfall pack places the fort at a spacing of 163 chunks, against 85 in the mod, so a player may travel a long way between forts. The pack's Sparse Structures setting makes most non-horror structures sparser than they would be with the mods at their defaults.
Ominous bosses and omens
Several bosses in the pack have an ominous variant. The variant is triggered by the Trial Omen or Bad Omen effect on a nearby player, and it is the main way that illager-style bosses become harder.
- The Dead King becomes ominous when a player with a Trial Omen or Bad Omen effect is within 24 blocks as the boss loads. An ominous Dead King has 1000 health, and its summons may carry the Sacrificial Mark effect.
- The Echo of Tyros has an ominous variant, but it is disabled by default in this pack. The
tyrosOminousEnabledoption is false, so players do not meet it unless the option is changed. - The Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks bosses have ominous variants triggered by the same two effects.
Treat either effect as a warning. An ominous boss is much harder than its normal form, so check the effects before approaching a boss room or a boss's spawn area.
Night threats
Illagers are part of two night-time systems. The Graveyard Hordes event of The Graveyard runs its own overworld horde timer. A horde can contain undead or illagers, and it appears near a random online player at night. The Horde Nights event of The Hordes sends timed waves to each player, and illagers are part of its spawn tables. The two events are separate, so a player can face both on the same night.
Villagers and wandering traders avoid Graveyard hostile mobs and run from them when they come within 10 blocks, so villagers near a horde leave the area. Lit, enclosed bases are rarely troubled by these hordes.
Tips
- Check the Trial Omen and Bad Omen effects before entering a boss area. An ominous boss is much harder than the normal fight.
- Expect naval raids to reach you by water. Plunderers can board boats and steer them, and cannonballs break blocks as well as damage mobs.
- Use doors and walls outside a raid. Acolytes and Corrupted Illagers cannot open doors without a raid.
- Corruption drops from the Corrupted Illagers are needed for the Lich progression, so kill them when they appear.
