The Plunderer is a hostile pirate illager added by Supplementaries. It is a melee raider with a golden sword and a spyglass, and it is the pack's main seafaring enemy. Plunderers crew the Galleon shipwrecks that generate on the ocean floor, and they take part in raids that are launched from open water instead of land. Unlike the land-based pillager it replaces in these settings, a plunderer can board boats, steer them, and fire a cannon mounted on a boat or a block.

Spawning

Plunderers do not spawn naturally in biomes. They appear in two situations.

  • Galleon shipwrecks. Each galleon's monster spawn box holds one pillager (weight 5) and one plunderer (weight 7), with a minimum and maximum of one of each. The galleon structure generates at sea level in offshore terrain and is placed on a spread of 31 chunks with a separation of 19 chunks. It is kept at least 16 chunks away from villages and 5 chunks away from ocean monuments. Because the galleon depends on the rope feature, it does not generate when ropes are disabled in the config. Galleons are described on the Galleon page.
  • Naval raids. Raids started near a village may spawn in open water instead of on land, with a chance of 0.75 by default (naval_raid_chance). In a naval raid, each pillager that would have spawned has a 0.5 chance to become a plunderer instead (naval_raid_plunderer_chance). Every plunderer in a naval wave is given its own dark oak boat, and the other raiders are placed into the remaining boats. See Raids and Illagers for how raids are scheduled.

Plunderers are never spawned in clusters. The spawn cluster size is 1. The Red Merchant is a separate mob and does not come from these spawns.

A spawn egg is available as Plunderer Spawn Egg.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

A plunderer has 24 health (12 hearts), a movement speed of 0.35, a follow range of 12 blocks, and an attack damage attribute of 6. It is equipped with a golden sword when it spawns. About one in 300 spawned swords receives a raid-style enchantment from the post-wave-5 enchantment provider. A plunderer that spawns with a parrot on its shoulder (20% chance) is accompanied by a parrot. Both are described under "Parrots" below.

Targeting

  • Players are its primary target. A plunderer chooses players that are in its line of sight, and it can keep tracking a player at up to 70 blocks, because its follow distance is the larger of its follow range and the spyglass viewing distance.
  • Villagers and iron golems are secondary targets, with a lower priority than players.
  • When a plunderer is hurt by another raider, it alerts nearby raiders to the same target.
  • A plunderer with a player as its target is not removed when the player is far away. Other plunderers are removed by the normal distance rules.

Melee

When the target is within 12 blocks, the plunderer closes in and attacks with melee. It holds its ground when a target comes within 10 blocks. It also wanders and looks at nearby players and mobs when it has no target.

Spyglass

When a plunderer looks at a distant target, it raises a spyglass to its eye. This visual is for aiming, and it does not change combat stats.

Boats

Plunderers use boats in several ways. A plunderer that has a target while standing on land does not look for boats, and boarding only happens while the plunderer or its target is in water.

  • Boarding. A plunderer looks for a boat within 8 blocks and climbs into it. The search runs on average once every 200 ticks.
  • Captaincy. If a passenger who cannot steer takes the front seat, the plunderer takes over the boat's controls. It ejects the other passengers, sits at the front, and reboards them.
  • Abandoning ship. If the boat is not steered by a captain and is out of the water or stuck, the plunderer leaves the boat after 15 ticks (0.75 seconds) at the edge.
  • Cannon boats. When the target is more than 16 blocks away, a plunderer in a cannon boat fires at it. It uses the cannon for at most 300 ticks (15 seconds), and it gives up after 300 ticks without firing. Between shots it waits 50 to 80 ticks. The shot is aimed with a prediction of the target's movement.
  • Cannon blocks. A plunderer that is not in a boat can walk to a cannon block within 20 blocks of its position and fire from it, under the same range and cooldown rules. The movement goal gives up after 1,200 ticks of trying to reach the cannon, and it stops after 1,000 ticks spent at the cannon.

Pillagers can use cannon boats as well, when the pillagers_use_cannon_boats config option is on (default on).

Parrots

A plunderer may have a parrot on its shoulder, and wild parrots can land on plunderers. A shoulder parrot is removed when the plunderer takes damage, falls more than 1.5 blocks, is underwater, sleeps, or stands in powder snow. The removed parrot is released into the world next to the plunderer, tamed to it, and follows it.

Drops

Plunderers drop 5 experience points when killed. Their only item drop is a spyglass, and only when a player kills the plunderer. The base chance is 0.25%. The Looting enchantment raises the chance to 0.5% at level I, 0.75% at level II, and 1.0% at level III.

Tips

  • A plunderer that is in a boat with a target more than 16 blocks away will fire its cannon. Close the distance quickly or get out of its line of fire.
  • A plunderer that has a player as its target is not removed for being far away, so a plunderer that spots you may follow you a long way.
  • Because its melee attack only starts within 12 blocks, staying at a distance and using ranged weapons such as the Slingshot or a bow keeps the plunderer from closing in.
