The Altimeter, Slice Map and Navigation group covers two navigation items added by Supplementaries. The Altimeter is a handheld height gauge: it shows its holder's position on a vertical strip and reports the player's Y coordinate when used. The Slice Map is a filled map that displays a horizontal cross-section of the world at the player's current height, which makes it useful for reading cave floors, mine levels and the layout of a base from above without the surface terrain covering it. Both items are cheap to craft and stack to 64, so a player can carry several at once.
Obtaining
Both items are made at a crafting table.
Crafting
The Altimeter is crafted from four copper ingots and one redstone dust. The Slice Map is crafted from one Altimeter and one empty map. The Altimeter is consumed by the Slice Map recipe, so each slice map costs an Altimeter as well as the map.
Usage
Altimeter
The Altimeter has a height display built into its model. The model is a vertical strip whose position is set by the holder's Y coordinate, scaled between the world's minimum and maximum build heights. The strip is drawn with a texture chosen by the current dimension. The Overworld texture is used by default, and the Nether and the End have their own textures as well. Any other dimension falls back to the Overworld texture unless the mod's client configuration lists a texture for it.
Using the Altimeter (right-click) shows the player's current Y coordinate in the action bar and swings the player's arm. This click action is enabled by default and can be turned off in the client configuration.
Slice Map
Using an empty map with an Altimeter in a crafting recipe creates the Slice Map. A Slice Map is a filled map whose cross-section is fixed when it is created. The map is created at the player's current X and Z position, at the most detailed map scale, with the slice set to one block above the player's feet (the player's Y coordinate, rounded down, plus 1). The map is set to track the player's position, so the player's marker appears on it.
The slice differs from a normal map in three ways:
- Terrain above the slice is hidden. The map samples the terrain height no higher than the slice height. Blocks above the slice do not appear on the map, so the map shows the cave floor or ground at that level rather than the roof or surface above it.
- Scanned area is reduced. The area that the map covers when it updates is multiplied by a range multiplier, which is 0.25 by default. The multiplier is set in the common configuration with a value between 0 and 1.
- The map stops updating when blocked. The map checks the column between the player and the slice height at a point near the player (within two blocks on each horizontal axis). If that column contains a block with a map colour, which includes most solid blocks, the map is not refreshed. The map keeps showing its last image until the column is clear. A player standing under a roof or inside a sealed room therefore sees a frozen map.
The Slice Map is useful for working out the layout of a cave or mine at one height, because the rest of the terrain does not hide it. The map stays at the slice height it was made at. To map a different level, the player needs a new Slice Map, made at the new height.
Items
- Altimeter is a height display item. Its strip and Y-coordinate readout are described above.
- Slice Map is a filled map showing one horizontal slice of the world, made from an Altimeter and an empty map.
